  • Author : Gregory Kramer

Download or read book Insight Dialogue written by Gregory Kramer and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insight Dialogue is a way of bringing the tranquility and insight attained in meditation directly into your interactions with other people. It’s a practice that involves interacting with a partner in a retreat setting or on your own, as a way of accessing a profound kind of insight. Then, you take that insight on into the grind of everyday human interactions. Gregory Kramer has been teaching the practice (which he originated) for more than a decade in retreats around the world. It’s something strikingly new in the world of Buddhist practice—yet it’s completely grounded in traditional Buddhist teaching. Kramer begins with a detailed presentation of the central Buddhist teaching of the Four Noble Truths seen through an interpersonal lens. Because dukkha (suffering or unsatisfactoriness) is often most forcefully felt in our relations with others, interpersonal relationships are a wonderfully useful place to practice. He breaks the Noble Truths down into component parts to observe how they manifest particularly in relationship to others, using examples from his own life and practice, as well as from his students’. He then goes on to present the practice as it’s taught in his workshops and retreats. There are a few basic steps to the practice, deceptively simple to describe: (1) pause, (2) relax, (3) open, (4) trust emergence, (5) listen deeply, and (6) speak the truth. The sequence begins following a period of meditation, and includes periods of speaking, listening, and mutual silence. Kramer includes numerous examples of people’s experience with the practice from his retreats, and shows how the insight gained from the techniques can be brought into real life. More than just testimonials for how well the practice "works," the personal stories demonstrate the problems that arise, the different routes the practice can follow, and the sometimes surprising insights that are gained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Digha Nikaya or the collection of long doctrinary lectures of the Buddha is one of the five Nikayas or collections belonging to the Suttapitaka or the basket of (Buddha`s) discourses which is one of the three majorr collections of Pali Buddhist texts, the other two being Vinayapitaka and Abhidhammapitaka. It consists of 34 long suttas of which each individual one treats intensively some particular point or points of the doctrine. The Buddha, like other Indian teachers of his time, taught by conversation. He followed the literary habit of his time by embodying his doctrine in set phrases, sutras, on which he enlarged on different occasiions in different ways. When the Buddha died these sayings (suttas) were collected together by his disciples into the great Nikayas of which the present one is the first.

Book Science And Buddhism Dialogues

Download or read book Science And Buddhism Dialogues written by Tsutomu (Jixin) Kambe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Origin of Life on Earth is explored by modern sciences based both on experimental and observational methods, a new biological principle is adopted in addition to the principles of physics and chemistry. The biosphere is explained by the biodiversity and coexistence amongst countlessly different species reminding us of the Buddha Nature. The book verifies the existence of a platform — dialogues between science and Buddhism — to contemplate these modern aspects of life.In the 2nd century BCE, western Greek philosophy encountered eastern Indian Buddhist philosophy, as captured in a Buddhist text, the Milindapanha (Questions of Milinda), resulting in the Greco-Buddhism, the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism. Some two thousand years later, in the modern era, the sciences have revolutionized ancient philosophies, as Buddhism by the philosophy of Emptiness, stimulating various new schools. Many scientists have written about science, and many Buddhists have explained Buddhism, but an in-depth analysis of both fields may be rare. The book reports on a recent project commemorating the founder and Indian monk of Zen Buddhism Bodhidharma. Imagine a Buddhist Eagle, soaring in the sky of Emptiness with both wings spreading out — one of Wisdom and another of Great Compassion — on all countlessly-many sentient beings.

Book Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha

Download or read book Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha written by Daniel Ingram and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very idea that the teachings can be mastered will arouse controversy within Buddhist circles. Even so, Ingram insists that enlightenment is an attainable goal, once our fanciful notions of it are stripped away, and we have learned to use meditation as a method for examining reality rather than an opportunity to wallow in self-absorbed mind-noise. Ingram sets out concisely the difference between concentration-based and insight (vipassana) meditation; he provides example practices; and most importantly he presents detailed maps of the states of mind we are likely to encounter, and the stages we must negotiate as we move through clearly-defined cycles of insight. Its easy to feel overawed, at first, by Ingram's assurance and ease in the higher levels of consciousness, but consistently he writes as a down-to-earth and compassionate guide, and to the practitioner willing to commit themselves this is a glittering gift of a book.In this new edition of the bestselling book, the author rearranges, revises and expands upon the original material, as well as adding new sections that bring further clarity to his ideas.

Book Conversations with Buddha

Download or read book Conversations with Buddha written by Joan Duncan Oliver and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relaxed chat with the Buddha tells us what he thought about impermanence, karma, mindfulness, compassion, love, and everything else that leads us toward a true understanding of ourselves and the cosmos. We know him as the Buddha, the “Awakened One”. Born Siddhartha Gautama 2,500 years ago in northern India, he became one of the world’s greatest spiritual leaders. He suffered as we do, then by his own efforts found the key to liberation from the bonds of desire, hatred and ignorance. As Westerners living in relative prosperity, we can identify with this man who had it all – love, success, money, talent, privilege – but set these things aside to search for something deeper and more enduring. This book presents an account of the Buddha’s life followed by a series of plausible and illuminating but imagined conversations, which probe all aspects of his philosophy for living. The insights he conveys here offer us practical wisdom for a better life.

Book Quotes Sayings from Buddhist Masters

Download or read book Quotes Sayings from Buddhist Masters written by Sati Dhamma and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist Quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddha, Dalaï-Lama, Pema Chödrön... "A disciplined mind brings happiness." Buddha "In mindfulness one is not only restful and happy, but alert and awake. Meditation is not evasion; it is a serene encounter with reality." Thich Nhat Hanh "If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path." Buddha "In our struggle for freedom, truth is the only weapon we possess." Dalaï-Lama Being interested in the Buddha's teaching is not a coincidence; through our lives, we have been learning about the ultimate truth, the deeper meaning of life. We have been learning from different traditions, various teachers and gurus. And sometimes we came across the teaching of the Buddha. Where there is no dogma, no rules to follow but a clear understanding of reality and its laws. Life is built around principles, that makes our world, our universe, stable and harmonious. Knowing those rules allows us to align ourselves to this harmony... The Buddha simply gave us a way to find the alignment faster. The summary the Buddha once gave to a monk was: "First establish yourself in the starting point of wholesome states, that is, in purified moral discipline and in right view. Then, when your moral discipline is purified and your view straight, you should practice the four foundations of mindfulness". To give you a clear direction and view about this beautiful path, I will start this book with Quotes directly from the Buddha and will continue with Quotes from different monks, Lamas and Zen teachers who have shared their understanding through the ages. "Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions." Dalaï-Lama "The Buddha teaches that there is one defilement which gives rise to all the others, one root which holds them all in place. This root is ignorance (avijja)." Bhikkhu Bodhi "The Buddha says that the Dhamma, the ultimate truth of things, is directly visible, timeless, calling out to be approached and seen. He says further that it is always available to us, and that the place where it is to be realized is within oneself." Bhikkhu Bodhi "Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have." Buddha May you all be liberated, may you carry the burden easlily and keep yourself happy.
