Book Di logo de la lengua By Juan de Vald s

Download or read book Di logo de la lengua By Juan de Vald s written by K. Anipa and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed in Naples in the 1530s, Juan de Valdés's Diálogo de la lengua occupies a special place in Spanish humanism, just as its author is widely acknowledged by Renaissance scholars as one of the most important intellectuals of 16th-century Western Europe. This edition reflects on the complex early history of the earliest extant primary text (MS 8629, held in the Spanish National Library), which is unanimously accepted as the most reliable of the three): whether or not it could have been copied in Valdés's lifetime, how and when it reached Spain from Naples (where it was written), its real intended recipients, its circulation amongst a circle of Castilian friends, and how it managed to evade the ubiquitous eyes of the Inquisition.

Book A Local Habitation and a Name

Download or read book A Local Habitation and a Name written by Albert Russell Ascoli and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on major authors and problems from the Italian fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, from Petrarch and Boccaccio to Machiavelli, Ariosto and Tasso, A Local Habitation and a Name examines the unstable dialectic of "reality" and "imagination," as well as of "history" and "literature." Albert Ascoli identifies and interprets the ways in which literary texts are shaped by and serve the purposes of multiple, intertwined historical discourses and circumstances, and he equally probes the function of such texts in constructing, interpreting, critiquing, and effacing the histories in which they are embedded. Throughout, he poses the theoretical and methodological question of how formal analysis and literary forms can at once resist and further the historicist enterprise. Along the way Ascoli interrogates the mechanisms of historical periodization that have governed for so long our study of what is sometimes called the "Renaissance," sometimes the early modern period. He also addresses the period's own unstable version of the literature/history opposition, the place of gendered discourse in the construction of historical narratives (and vice versa), the elaborate formal strategies by which poets and intellectuals negotiate their relations to power, and, finally, the way in which proper names (of authors, works, and exemplary characters) serve as points of negotiation between individual identity and social order in the Renaissance. The book brings to culmination two decades of a major scholar's thinking about some of the most important figures and questions that shaped the Renaissance, with emphasis on the question of history, both the historical context of literature and the writing of literary history.

Book The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast

Download or read book The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast written by Giordano Bruno and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in London in 1584, The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast is Giordano Bruno’s first work of moral philosophy. It is dedicated with a long Explicatory Letter to Elizabeth I’s most cultured courtier, Sir Philip Sidney. It is a book about moral reform, expelling the beasts of evil, and putting virtues in their place. Its theme is presented as an allegorical drama in which ancient myths assume modern meanings questioning the ways in which moral and religious reform have been conceived in both the ancient world and the cultures of Renaissance Europe. This new Italian text, based on the original printed text of 1584 held in the British Library, presents a less modernized version than those presently available, while maintaining a modern page format. The aim is to provide a text closer to the sound of Bruno’s original mix of classical Tuscan Italian and Neapolitan dialectical forms. This edition also presents a new translation designed to render Bruno’s complex and baroque Italian into easily readable modern English. Hilary Gatti introduces The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast, underlining Bruno’s meta-literary reflection on the nature of allegory and myth as well as the dramatic structure of his text. Drama, philosophy, and religion combine in this work to give an epic dimension to the perennial cosmic battle between evil and good.

Book Music in Seventeenth Century Naples

Download or read book Music in Seventeenth Century Naples written by Dinko Fabris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important figure of seventeenth-century Neapolitan music, Francesco Provenzale (1624-1704) spent his long life in the service of a number of Neapolitan conservatories and churches, culminating in his appointment as maestro of the Tesoro di S. Gennaro and the Real Cappella. Provenzale was successful in generating significant profit from a range of musical activities promoted by him with the participation of his pupils and trusted collaborators. Dinko Fabris draws on newly discovered archival documents to reconstruct the career of a musician who became the leader of his musical world, despite his relatively small musical output. The book examines Provenzale's surviving works alongside those of his most important Neapolitan contemporaries (Raimo Di Bartolo, Sabino, Salvatore and Caresana) and pupils (Fago, Greco, Veneziano and many others), revealing both stylistic similarities and differences, particularly in terms of new harmonic practices and the use of Neapolitan language in opera. Fabris provides both a life and works study of Provenzale and a conspectus of Neapolitan musical life of the seventeenth century which so clearly laid the groundwork for Naples' later status as one of the great musical capitals of Europe.
