Book excerpt: "WHAT SHALL I CALL IT" continued and many of the characters and family members come into the story with their special characteristics and the main character the "spear of Longinus", help to make the story more mystic and the plot gets more interesting as the reader begin to realize that he or she is in the story because the tail is in the make up of all of us. Is Lizzie Bell a real person or an alien goddess. She went to Mars and ruined the whole planet! We go from Texas to Oakland and back to Texas and get ready for the long trip to outer space! (In imagination, if the prophecy is written in the mind of the believer!) These people are very mysterious and kind and pitiful. Oakland is the place of horses in trees, and lake Merritt being taken up into the sky and the tunnel to Alameda flooding and the Oakland Auditorium being the place of strange happenings under a sand box, or is that the other books? Why is Lizsie Bell in the story anyway, or is it the other story? She went to Venus and ruined the whole planet, who is the bdelloids? Or who are they? These characters are all great fighters and do many wonderful things for the reader who had the imagination of the writer, he is a character too. Look into the heart of the Oakland people and you will see the reflection of many people you have seen in down town Oakland at one time or another. The victims of the violence, mothers and children and the offenders. Did a man or men really make a million dollars insuring those people already dead? So what is that under your feet? A bookworm or what are you anyway? Who is Lizzie Bell anyway? Who are the (you) bdelloids in you?

Book excerpt: From Anthony and Agatha Award-winning author Elaine Viets—the thrilling mystery series about one woman trying to make a living... while other people are making a killing. Still living under the radar in Fort Lauderdale due to her refusal to pay her ex-husband’s spousal support, Helen Hawthorne’s latest workaday job might just be the lowest rung on the employment ladder—telemarketing. She’s spending her hours interrupting dinners and disturbing slumbers, and in return hearing curses and extremely rude suggestions. Then, while Helen is conducting a phone survey with the wealthy Henry “Hank” Asporth, he puts the receiver down without hanging up...and Helen can’t believe what she hears next. She can just make out a man and a woman arguing, a short scream cut off by a horrible choking sound, then an eerie silence followed by a final “click.” Convinced she just heard a murder being committed—but with no solid proof—Helen is driven to find out what really happened with Hank and the mystery woman. But if she’s not careful, she just might end up holding a dead line of her own...

Book The Call of the Wild and White Fang

Download or read book The Call of the Wild and White Fang written by Jack London and published by Collector's Library. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented together in one volume, these are two of the greatest and most popular animal stories ever written. Even to designate them as "animal stories" seems to undervalue them, because these tremendous works are so much more than mere children's tales, although they are admittedly still greatly loved by the young. Penned by Jack London at the beginning of the twentieth century, the first, The Call of the Wild, tells the story of Buck, a domestic dog who is kidnapped from his home in California and forced to pull sleds in the Arctic wastes. In the second, White Fang, a cross-breed that is three-quarters wolf and one quarter dog, endures considerable suffering in the Arctic before being tamed by a white American and taken to live in California. The two narratives are remarkable for the vividness of their descriptions and the success with which London imagines life from a nonhuman perspective.

This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Call of the Wild + White Fang + The Son of the Wolf', Jack London masterfully weaves together three classic tales that explore the depths of the human-animal bond and the wilderness of the North. Through his vivid descriptions and engaging storytelling style, London transports readers to the rugged landscapes of the Yukon and Alaska, where survival is a constant battle and the call of the wild echoes through the pages. Each story is filled with themes of courage, loyalty, and the primal instincts that drive both human and animal behavior. London's writing is both adventurous and thought-provoking, offering readers a glimpse into the harsh realities of life in the wilderness and the resilience of the creatures who inhabit it. Jack London, a renowned adventurer and journalist, drew inspiration from his own experiences in the Klondike Gold Rush and his love for the natural world. His deep connection to nature and his passion for storytelling shine through in this collection of unabridged classics, cementing his legacy as a literary giant of the early 20th century. I highly recommend 'The Call of the Wild + White Fang + The Son of the Wolf' to readers who enjoy adventure, nature writing, and timeless tales of survival. Jack London's powerful stories will stay with you long after you turn the final page, leaving you in awe of the untamed beauty of the wild.

Book excerpt: Author Peter Leavell forges an unprecedented tale of tragedy and triumph amid the backdrop of the Civil War through the story of Tad, a very clever slave boy who comes of age as America's war reaches the sea islands of South Carolina. Tad's desire to better himself is obstructed by the color of his skin, until Northern soldiers force the evacuation of white plantation owners, setting 10,000 slaves free in a single day. These circumstances seem like a dream, except that the newly freed slaves have no money, no education, and little hope for the future-unless someone rises up to lead them. Based on true events, Gideon's Call is the dramatic tale of a young man who battles the shame of his past and faces the horrors of war and unimaginable prejudice to become the deliverer of thousands of freed slaves.

Book Your Call Is Important to Us

Download or read book Your Call Is Important to Us written by Laura Penny and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-07-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every once in a while a truth-telling book appears out of nowhere, a book that crystallizes our darkest suspicions and makes us mad as hell—while we’re laughing like fiends. A book like this one. Your Call Is Important to Us is a manifesto for anyone who’s sick and tired of the twenty-first century’s tidal wave of bullshit. Taking no prisoners, author Laura Penny dissects—no, disembowels—the culture of globalized, super-sized, consumerized b.s. Dating the renaissance of bullshit to wartime propaganda, Penny skewers the “corporate bafflegab,” scripted, question-proof political events, toxic faux foodstuffs, and miracle pills that clutter our lives. She spares no one and nothing: not Wal-Mart, where “every rinky-dink chunk of mass-produced bric-a-brac is manufactured expressly for you”; not Bush’s White House, with its “wallpaper of phony populist sloganeering”; and not the vast pharmaceutical industry, with its “gateway prescription drugs.” Penny reveals that prisons are the hot new thing in call centers (the federal prison industry bills itself as “the best-kept secret in outsourcing”) and that the Public Relations Society of America has a Code of Ethics Pledge (who knew?). Finally, with devastating precision, she demonstrates how our “all-you-can-eat buffet of phoniness” not only alienates us from each other but degrades public discourse, breeds apathy, and makes us just plain stupid. Your Call Is Important to Us introduces a fearless and utterly disarming new voice in social criticism. It’s an island of clarity in an ocean of ordure. Laura Penny on Bullshit: There is so much bullshit that one hardly knows where to begin. The platitudinous pabulum that passes for stirring political rhetoric is bullshit. . . . The committee-crafted persona and the focus-grouped fad and the rule of the polls are straight-up bullshit. The disease hysteria du jour is bullshit, and so is the latest miracle pill. The new product that will change your life is probably just more cheap, plastic bullshit. “Your call is important to us” has been chosen from a very deep reservoir of bullshit phrases for the title of this book because it best exemplifies the properties native to bullshit. It tries to slather some nice on the result of a simple ratio: your time versus some company’s dough. Like most bullshit, the more times you hear it, the bullshittier it gets. This is why bullshit is best served quickly, with many visuals, in mass quantities, with no questions from the floor.
