Book Diagnostic Systems on Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Diagnostic Systems on Alcator C Mod written by Nils Plesner Basse and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the diagnostics installed on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [I. H. HUTCHINSON et al., Phys. Plasmas, Vol. 1, p. 1511 (1994)] is presented. Approximately twenty-five diagnostic systems are being operated on C-Mod. The compact design of the machine and the cryostat enclosing the vacuum vessel and magnetic field coils make access challenging. Diagnostics are used to study four focus areas: Transport, plasma boundary, waves and macrostability. There is significant overlap between these topics and they all contribute towards the burning plasma and advanced tokamak thrusts. Several advanced and novel diagnostics contribute to the investigation of C-Mod plasmas, e.g. electron cyclotron emission, phase-contrast imaging, gas-puff imaging, probe measurements and active magnetohydrodynamic antennas.

Book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors

Download or read book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors written by Giuseppe Gorini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

Book Engineering Upgrades to the Motional Stark Effect Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Engineering Upgrades to the Motional Stark Effect Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod written by Robert Thomas Mumgaard and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Motional Stark Effect (mse) diagnostic deployed on the alcator c-mod tokamak previously experienced unacceptable calibration drift and sensitivity to partially-polarized background light that limited its ability to measure magnetic field pitch-angles. The need to identify the cause of the polarization drift and to characterize sources of error motivated the development of a robotic calibration system consisting of a motorized three axis positioning system and a light source capable of generating arbitrary polarization states. The system produces linear polarization angles with accuracy of 0.05°, operates during maintenance periods, has a Lambertian and laser illumination source, and captures the complex diagnostic polarization response using a Fourier expansion of the detector signals in terms of even harmonics of the input polarization angle. This study guided the fielding of a first-of-a-kind inter-shot calibration (isc) system for the mse diagnostic -- a long sought capability. The isc inputs high quality polarized light at four carefully chosen polarization angles into the diagnostic objective lens within ten seconds of the plasma discharge using a single high-precision moving part internal to the vacuum vessel. Fiber optics are used to sequentially illuminate the calibration polarizers via backlight scattering similar to an LCD screen, fully filling the view of each of the ten mse sightlines with polarization angles repeatable to better than 0.05°. The system has operated inside the vacuum for over 8500 cycles and is used to reconstruct the diagnostic calibration on a variety of timescales. This system was used to identify thermal-stress induced birefringence in several of the diagnostic's lenses as the cause of polarization calibration drift. Gold-plated radiative heat-shields and low-conduction lens and periscope mounts thermally isolate the in-vacuum periscope, and a forced-flow active thermal control system regulates the ex-vessel periscope and vacuum window. This successfully controls the optic stress in thermal environment ranging ±150°C. A high-throughput narrow-bandpass filter-based polychromator was developed as a new configuration for mse detectors. The system allows high-spectral selectivity at an étendue of 15mm2 sr for four simultaneous polarization measurements on the same viewing sightline. It sequentially passes light among four different

Book Real Time Control of the Active MHD Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Real Time Control of the Active MHD Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod written by William M. Burke and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Active MHD Diagnostic has been installed and operated on Alcator C--Mod to study Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs). The diagnostic consists of two broadband amplifiers and two antennas which can excite stable modes in the TAE frequency range. The plasma response to this excitation is measured by existing magnetic fluctuation diagnostics. Analysis of the fluctuation data provides information about the TAE frequencies and damping rates as well as mode structure. The Active MHD diagnostic has evolved since its first operation in 2002, when it could only operate over a limited, preprogrammed frequency band. Recent improvements include automatic tuning to cover frequencies from 100 to 750 kHz, and an interface to the Alcator C--Mod Digital Plasma Control System (DPCS). The DPCS monitors plasma parameters, calculates the nominal TAE frequency, and adjusts the frequency input to the MHD amplifiers, all in real time. Now the Active MHD Diagnostic can measure TAEs over an entire plasma shot. This paper is focused on the requirements and design of the MHD Amplifiers, particularly the tuning bandwidth. It will also present some preliminary results from the recent run campaign.

Book Design of a New Optical System for Alcator C Mod Motional Stark Effect Diagnostic

Download or read book Design of a New Optical System for Alcator C Mod Motional Stark Effect Diagnostic written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic on Alcator C-Mod uses an in-vessel optical system (five lenses and three mirrors) to relay polarized light to an external polarimeter because port access limitations on Alcator C-Mod preclude a direct view of the diagnostic beam. The system experiences unacceptable, spurious drifts of order several degrees in measured pitch angle over the course of a run day. Recent experiments illuminated the MSE diagnostic with polarized light of fixed orientation as heat was applied to various optical elements. A large change in measured angle was observed as two particular lenses were heated, indicating that thermal-stress-induced birefringence is a likely cause of the spurious variability. Several new optical designs have been evaluated to eliminate the affected in-vessel lenses and to replace the focusing they provide with curved mirrors; however, ray tracing calculations imply that this method is not feasible. A new approach is under consideration that utilizes in situ calibrations with in-vessel reference polarized light sources. 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Book Phase Contrast Imaging on the Alcator C Mod Tokamak

Download or read book Phase Contrast Imaging on the Alcator C Mod Tokamak written by Alexander Mazurenko and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase Contrast Imaging (PCI) is a new diagnostic that was built for the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. It measures line-integrated (along 12 vertical chords) plasma density perturbations with good temporal (2-500 kHz) and wavenumber (0.5-12 /cm) resolution. The Quasi-Coherent (QC) fluctuation mode was studied using the PCI and other diagnostics. The mode was found to cause fluctuation of density, electric and magnetic field in the plasma edge with typical frequency of 100 kHz and typical poloidal wavenumber of about 5/cm. The mode was found to be responsible for confinement properties of the "Enhanced D-alpha H-mode" (a particularly favorable regime of tokamak operation). Through numerical modeling, the physical origin of the fluctuations was tentatively identified as "resistive X-point" mode (a kind of resistive ballooning mode strongly affected by the X-point configuration of magnetic field lines). The PCI system has been upgraded to detect waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF, 40-80 MHz) by means of optical heterodyning - a technique based on modulation of the diagnostic laser beam near the wave frequency. The upgraded system was then used to study propagation of the Fast Magnetosonic Waves. These waves, which have never been measured in detail in past experiments, are being used to heat the tokamak plasma at the megawatt power level. The measured results were compared to the simple cold-plasma dispersion relation and to predictions of the full-wave 3D numerical modeling.

Book Correlation ECE Diagnostic in Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Correlation ECE Diagnostic in Alcator C Mod written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correlation ECE (CECE) is a diagnostic technique that allows measurement of small amplitude electron temperature, Te, fluctuations through standard cross-correlation analysis methods. In Alcator C-Mod, a new CECE diagnostic has been installed[Sung RSI 2012], and interesting phenomena have been observed in various plasma conditions. We find that local Te fluctuations near the edge ([rho] ~ 0:8) decrease across the linearto- saturated ohmic confinement transition, with fluctuations decreasing with increasing plasma density[Sung NF 2013], which occurs simultaneously with rotation reversals[Rice NF 2011]. Te fluctuations are also reduced across core rotation reversals with an increase of plasma density in RF heated L-mode plasmas, which implies that the same physics related to the reduction of Te fluctuations may be applied to both ohmic and RF heated L-mode plasmas. In I-mode plasmas, we observe the reduction of core Te fluctuations, which indicates changes of turbulence occur not only in the pedestal region but also in the core across the L/I transition[White NF 2014]. The present CECE diagnostic system in C-Mod and these experimental results are described in this paper.

Book Lower Hybrid Current Drive on Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Lower Hybrid Current Drive on Alcator C Mod written by Robert Thomas Mumgaard and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) is a promising technique to sustain tokamak plasmas and provide control over the current profile--two important capabilities required for the development of tokamak fusion reactors. Upgraded measurement capabilities on the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak create a unique opportunity to study the plasma's toroidal electric current profile at magnetic fields, plasma densities, and magnetic geometries anticipated in future reactors in stationary discharges dominated by lhcd. The Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic uses polarized light to infer the plasma's internal current profile. The MSE diagnostic deployed on the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak previously experienced unacceptable calibration drift and sensitivity to partially-polarized background light that limited its ability to measure magnetic field pitch-angles. A comprehensive analytic study of the origin of polarization angle errors in MSE diagnostics and an experimental study using a robotic calibration system were conducted. Insight from this study guided the fabrication and installation of a first-of-a-kind in-situ calibration system for MSE diagnostics--a long sought capability-- and the development of thermal isolation schemes for the periscope. An experimental study of the effect of partially polarized background light identified this as a significant source of systematic error. Partial-polarization upon reflection was identified as the mechanism that leads to polarized light in a tokamak. Visible bremsstrahlung, divertor emission, and blackbody emission were identified as the dominant sources of light. A new technique, MSE multi-spectral line polarization (MSE-MSLP), was developed to measure the polarization on a single sight line in multiple wavelengths simultaneously using a high-throughput polarization polychromator. Wavelength-interpolation of the background light polarization utilizing this hardware decreases the error from background subtraction by a factor of 5-10 relative to time-interpolation, drastically improving the measurement quality while eliminating the need for neutral beam pulsing. The method also allows for simultaneous measurement of multiple polarized transitions within the Stark multiplet. The upgraded MSE diagnostic was used to measure the magnetic field pitch angle profile in plasmas with some or all of the plasma current driven by lhcd. Measurements were made across a range of single-parameter scans: lhcd power, loop voltage, plasma density, plasma current, and launched n// spectrum. The current profile is observed to broaden during lhcd, but consistently has significant on-axis current density, even in fully non-inductive plasmas. The current profile and hard x-ray (HXR) profiles are observed to be most sensitive to plasma current, with higher current yielding broader profiles. The current and HXR profiles as well as global current-drive efficiency are insensitive to changes in n// or loop voltage. Numerical simulations by the ray-tracing Fokker-Planck GENRAY/CQL3D code reproduce the total measured current in non-inductive conditions but fail to accurately predict the current and HXR profiles; the simulations consistently predict more current drive in the outer half of the plasma than is observed. This leads to a flattening of the HXR profile compared to the experimental profiles. These qualitative discrepancies persist across the range of plasma parameters scanned. Varying code inputs within their measurement uncertainties and adding experimentally-constrained levels of fast-electron diffusion do not reconcile profile discrepancies. Some qualitative profile trends in single parameter scans are reproduced by the simulations including broadening of profiles at higher current, and a weak dependence on the launched n//spectrum. However, HXR profile self-similarity across different densities and powers is not reproduced. These new comparisons between profile measurements and simulation suggest that the simulations are missing important physics in this operational regime.

Book Two Color Interferometry as a Fluctuation Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod

Download or read book Two Color Interferometry as a Fluctuation Diagnostic on Alcator C Mod written by Cale Phillip Kasten and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-color interferometer diagnostic on Alcator C-Mod has been upgraded to measure line-integrated electron density fluctuations for turbulence and transport studies. Heterodyne signals from ten vertical-viewing CO2 laser chords are demodulated relative to a local oscillator using high bandwidth analog in-phase/quadrature electronics, replacing lower bandwidth digital fringe counting electronics. The raw outputs of the high bandwidth electronics, which are proportional to the sine and cosine of the interferometric phase shift, are digitized at up to 10 MHz, which is sufficient for fluctuation analysis. Extraction of the measured phase from the sine and cosine signals is now performed entirely in software, providing the line-integrated electron density at high bandwidth. The interferometer design, calibration, and measurement uncertainty is presented. Measurement uncertainties due to nonlinearities in the analog electronics are found to be comparable to the uncertainties of the previous system. The interferometer can now resolve line-integrated electron density fluctuations with major-radial wavenumbers below ... . The new fluctuation measurement capability is used to partially verify the calibration and low-kR wavenumber response of phase-contrast imaging, to aid in gyrokinetic transport model validation research. Agreement between the two diagnostics is demonstrated for broadband fluctuations and the low-kR component of the quasi-coherent mode, improving confidence in the calibration of the phase-contrast imaging system. Both diagnostics observe a series of fluctuations during quasi-steady periods of minority heated I-mode plasmas with strong off-axis electron heating. The observed fluctuations are localized to the plasma core using Doppler shift analysis and data from edge fluctuation diagnostics. Transport analysis shows that the fluctuations do not correlate with enhanced thermal transport, and gyrokinetic linear stability analysis shows that the plasma is stable to drift wave turbulence, ruling out the possibility that the observed fluctuations are destabilized drift wave turbulence.
