Book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology

Download or read book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology written by Roger A. Reichert and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In covering the topic of gynecologic and obstetric pathology, this book attempts to carve out its own niche midway between an atlas and a traditional textbook. The gross and microscopic images in this atlas are presented exclusively in color, and are supplemented by pertinent clinical information and discussions of differential diagnostic considerations. When deemed appropriate, images of immunohistochemical and special stains are included. To further enhance their visual appeal and the overall learning experience, many images in this book are presented with annotations and/or in composite form, and selected images have been enlarged. This image-intensive textbook also includes numerous Pap smear images and cytologic-histologic correlations. In addition to coverage of pathology of the organs of the female genital tract, brief overviews of the normal histology of these sites are provided as necessary background information. Separate chapters are also devoted to placental and peritoneal pathology. There is an emphasis on diagnostic-related issues pertaining to common lesions and their variants, although classic forms of rare lesions are also presented. In selected instances, recommendations on the processing of gross pathology specimens, discussions regarding the optimal approach for intraoperative consultations, and recommendations on the phrasing of key portions of pathology reports are provided. The 10 chapters of this book are organized by site, and the beginning of each chapter lists the entities discussed and their corresponding page numbers.

Book Imaging and Imagining the Fetus

Download or read book Imaging and Imagining the Fetus written by Malcolm Nicolson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How engineers and clinicians developed the ultrasound diagnostic scanner and how its use in obstetrics became controversial. To its proponents, the ultrasound scanner is a safe, reliable, and indispensable aid to diagnosis. Its detractors, on the other hand, argue that its development and use are driven by the technological enthusiasms of doctors and engineers (and the commercial interests of manufacturers) and not by concern to improve the clinical care of women. In some U.S. states, an ultrasound scan is now required by legislation before a woman can obtain an abortion, adding a new dimension to an already controversial practice. Imaging and Imagining the Fetus engages both the development of a modern medical technology and the concerted critique of that technology. Malcolm Nicolson and John Fleming relate the technical and social history of ultrasound imaging—from early experiments in Glasgow in 1956 through wide deployment in the British hospital system by 1975 to its ubiquitous use in maternity clinics throughout the developed world by the end of the twentieth century. Obstetrician Ian Donald and engineer Tom Brown created ultrasound technology in Glasgow, where their prototypes were based on the industrial flaw detector, an instrument readily available to them in the shipbuilding city. As a physician, Donald supported the use of ultrasound for clinical purposes, and as a devout High Anglican he imbued the images with moral significance. He opposed abortion—decisions about which were increasingly guided by the ultrasound technology he pioneered—and he occasionally used ultrasound images to convince pregnant women not to abort the fetuses they could now see. Imaging and Imagining the Fetus explores why earlier innovators failed where Donald and Brown succeeded. It also shows how ultrasound developed into a "black box" technology whose users can fully appreciate the images they produce but do not, and have no need to, understand the technology, any more than do users of computers. These "images of the fetus may be produced by machines," the authors write, "but they live vividly in the human imagination."

Download or read book Perinatal Imaging written by Fred E. Avni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetal and perinatal medicine is a rapidly expanding field, and noninvasive imaging by means of ultrasonography and MRI is playing a major role in refining diagnosis and therapy. Recent technological advances in these imaging modalities now allow unprecedented morphological depiction of the fetus and excellent insight into complex pathologic conditions, as well as yielding superior guidance for therapeutic fetal inter ventions. I am very pleased that Professor F. Avni , a leading international pediatric radiologist, was prepared to take on the challenging task of preparing and editing this comprehen sive and up-to-date overview of our knowledge in the area of fetal and perinatal imaging. He has been successful in engaging well-known experts with outstanding qualifications in fetal imaging to join him in this venture. I would like to congratulate Professor Avni and all contributing authors most sincerely for their excellent work. I am confident that this outstanding volume will meet with great interest not only from general as well as specialized pediatric radiologists but also from neonatologists and pediatricians. I trust it will enjoy the same success as many previous volumes in this series. ALBERT L. BAERT Leuven Preface Fetal and perinatal medicine would not have developed without the extensive use of obstetric ultrasound (US). In order to be efficient, the examination has to be performed very carefully and by sonologists fully conversant with the normal and abnormal development of the fetus.

Book excerpt: Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Obstetrics and Gynecology focuses on the potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a major imaging modality in the management of malignant diseases in the pelvis. This text is organized into two parts encompassing 11 chapters that provide images obtained by MRI in obstetrics and gynecology. Part one deals with the distinctive features of the normal uterus and vagina and those with carcinoma. It also presents the images of the benign disease and carcinomous ovary. Part 2 considers images of the maternal anatomy, placenta, fetus, and the gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. This book is of great value to obstetricians, gynecologists, and MRI technicians.
