Book excerpt: A history of diabetology told by renowned contributors, many have themselves already become a part of diabetes history. A must-have for every diabetologist! Diabetologists, diabetes educators, and many interested readers will appreciate this book. What is more, countless celebrations are planned for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin: this book provides numerous illustrations, accounts of personal experiences, and critical remarks on the history of diabetology – in addition to the history of insulin. It spans an arc from antiquity to the work of Claude Bernard, Paul Langerhans, Josef von Mering, Apollinaire Bouchardat, Oskar Minkowski, E.P. Joslin, and F.M. Allen. The history of insulin is presented from the perspective of diabetologists from Scotland, Spain, Germany, and Poland. The history of oral antidiabetics is told by Harald Lebovitz, and the chapter about glitazones by Edwin Gale reads like a spy novel! Pierre Lefèbvre describes the work of the diabetologist Jean Pirart and the history of glucagon. Sir George Alberti has provided a chapter about the therapy of ketoacidosis, to which he himself made groundbreaking contributions. Nephropathy is presented by Hans-Henrik Parving, and Eva Kohner, Ronald Klein and Barbara E.K. Klein have contributed a chapter on retinopathy. Other contemporary topics such diabetes in pregnancy, diabetes technology, psychosocial aspects of diabetes, and the history of the EASD and ADA are also included in this book.

Book excerpt: The prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes - three links of the same 'atherothrombotic chain' - has reached pandemic proportions worldwide. As a result, our civilization is at war against a threatening enemy: cardio-diabetes. Several independent physiological processes underlie the clustering of cardio-diabetes, including central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, inflammation, impaired glucose tolerance, and hypertension. Early detection is of overwhelming importance for public health. The complex and intimate relationship between cardiovascular disease and diabetes from basic science to clinical and therapeutic concerns is discussed in this outstanding book. Beginning with molecular, biochemical, inflammatory and cellular aspects, this publication continues with histological and pathophysiological issues, details particular problems in specific metabolic and clinical settings, and finally analyzes several aspects of clinical pharmacology focusing on the optimal management of combined dyslipidemia and non-insulin antidiabetic therapy in cardiac diabetic patients. This book will be a gain in knowledge for every cardiologist, diabetologist, specialist in internal medicine, nutritionalist, general physician and medical student.

Book Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Disease

Download or read book Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Disease written by Jorge R. Oksenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: utoimmunity is the downstream outcome of a rather extensive and coordinated series of events that include loss of self-tolerance, peripheral lymphocyte Aactivation, disruption of the blood-systems barriers, cellular infiltration into the target organs and local inflammation. Cytokines, adhesion molecules, growth factors, antibodies, and other molecules induce and regulate critical cell functions that perpetuate inflammation, leading to tissue injury and clinical phenotype. The nature and intensity of this response as well as the physiological ability to restore homeostasis are to a large extent conditioned by the unique amino acid sequences that define allelic variants on each of the numerous participating mol ecules. Therefore, the coding genes in their germline configuration play a primary role in determining who is at risk for developing such disorders, how the disease progresses, and how someone responds to therapy. Although genetic components in these diseases are clearly present, the lack of obvious and homogeneous modes of transmission has slowed progress by prevent ing the full exploitation of classical genetic epidemiologic techniques. Furthermore, autoimmune diseases are characterized by modest disease risk heritability and m- tifaceted interactions with environmental influences. Yet, several recent discoveries have dramatically changed our ability to examine genetic variation as it relates to human disease. In addition to the development of large-scale laboratory methods and tools to efficiently recognize and catalog DNA diversity, over the past few years there has been real progress in the application of new analytical and data-manage ment approaches.

Book Unleash Your Inner Diabetes Dominator

Book excerpt: "If every single person living with diabetes could read this book and apply Daniele's life-changing wisdom, millions of lives would be improved, billions of dollars would be saved, and the face of health in America would be entirely transformed." - Dr. Jody Stanislaw, PWD, Naturopathic Doctor, and Author, Hunger What is a Diabetes Dominator? Diabetes Dominator is a state of mind: Instead of diabetes being perceived as a weakness or a curse, diabetes can actually be a great source of strength if we choose to let it. We all have the power to turn adversity into advantage. Diabetes can be a catalyst for improving our lives, paying closer attention to what matters most in life, and for being of service to others. I didn't always feel this way, and that's why I wrote this book. This is the book I wish my mom and dad had when times looked darkest. This is the book that I wish I could go back and give to my younger self, to tell myself that it's going to be okay. To show myself that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that instead of feeling weak, hopeless, defeated, and unworthy for the rest of my life, that instead I will end up being stronger than I ever imagined possible. Since I can't go back and tell myself that, the best thing I can do now is give you the message. Diabetes can and will make you stronger if you CHOOSE to take the right actions, and believe that you deserve to feel strong, and that you deserve to feel loved. I hope this book will serve you as a guide and positive companion on that path. - Daniele Hargenrader "Daniele has a passion for helping people see the potential opportunities in the wake of their challenges. Daniele never lets us forget that we're People first, With Diabetes second." -Gary Scheiner MS, CDE, PWD Owner Integrated Diabetes Services, Author, Think Like a Pancreas "Daniele has a real, genuine passion for the diabetes community. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes mellitus affects approximately 20 million people in the US, or nearly 7% of the population. It is expected to increase by 70% within the next 25 years, and numerous epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that type 2 diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Hypertension and dyslipidemia in diabetic patients produces substantial decreases in cardiovascular and microvascular diseases. Nutritional and Therapeutic Interventions for Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome provides an overview of the current epidemic, outlines the consequences of this crisis and lays out strategies to forestall and prevent diabetes, obesity and other intricate issues of metabolic syndrome. The contributing experts from around the world give this book relevant and up-to-date global approaches to the critical consequences of metabolic syndrome and make it an important reference for those working with the treatment, evaluation or public health planning for the effects of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
