Book Diabetic Retinopathy and Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Diabetic Retinopathy and Cardiovascular Disease written by C. Sabanayagam and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common microvascular complication, has consistently been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This book provides complete coverage of DR as a potential marker for CVD in those with diabetes. It succinctly reviews the epidemiological and pathogenic links of DR to various cardiovascular events including stroke, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and mortality. Furthermore, it discusses the usefulness of DR in CVD risk prediction and cardiovascular safety of anti-VEGF therapy in diabetic patients. There are insights from contemporary diabetic trials that demonstrated the enhanced cardiovascular benefit of novel glucose lowering therapy. It also highlights the potential of novel retinal imaging to predict CVD and its risk factors using the state-of-the art artificial intelligence-based deep learning systems. This book will be an invaluable resource for specialists translating research findings into clinical care, including those in cardiology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, and general practitioners. IT will also be of interest to public health practitioners, researchers, graduate students, and biotech companies interested in developing retinal image-based diagnostic and prognostic tools.

Book Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes

Download or read book Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes written by Raj S. Bhopal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In people with South Asian ancestry, the cardiovascular diseases of stroke and coronary heart disease (CVD) are epidemic, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is pandemic. As South Asians comprise about 25% of the world's population their high susceptibility is of global public health and clinical importance. Eluding researchers across the globe, this phenomenon continues to be a subject of intensive enquiry. As Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, points out, the epidemics of chronic diseases, which he describes as a public health emergency in slow motion, can be restrained but not stopped. With a focus on the global South Asian population, Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes: Explaining the Phenomenon in South Asians Worldwide is a critical review of current literature investigating the increase in cases of CVD and DM2, and the data underpinning them. The book argues that the high risk of CVD and DM2 in urbanised South Asians is not inevitable, genetic, or programmed in a fixed way. Rather, exposure to risk factors in childhood, adolescence, and most particularly in adulthood, is the key to unravelling its cause. Drawing on current scientific literature and discussions with 22 international scholars, the book presents a unique synthesis of theory, research, and public health practice under one cover - from tissue research to human intervention trials. It also addresses the challenge many health professionals face in developing countries: to produce focused, low cost and effective actions for combating CVD and DM2. The lessons contained within will have ramifications in healthcare across the globe Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes: Explaining the Phenomenon in South Asians Worldwide is ideal for scholars, researchers and health practitioners working towards understanding and preventing the epidemics of these modern chronic diseases across the world.

Book Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease written by Aubie Angel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes and cardiovascular disease together account for the largest portion of health care spending compared to all other diseases in Western society. This work seeks to provide an understanding of the causes of diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. As this understanding becomes more widely appreciated, it will serve as a foundation for evidence-based care and wider acceptance of sound science. The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, held in Winnipeg, in June 1999, was organized to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers dedicated to further knowledge amongst researchers, care givers, and the managers of the health system. The invited speakers submitted their works for publication, which serves as the basis for this book. Major themes include: epidemiology of diabetes mellitus, metabolic risk factors in diabetes and cardiovascular disease, hypertension in diabetes mellitus, cardiac function in diabetes, glycemic control and improved cardiovascular function, diabetes management, and endothelial function in diabetes.

Download or read book The Diabetes Textbook written by Joel Rodriguez-Saldana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes has become a worldwide health problem, the global estimated prevalence approaches ten percent and the burden of this disease in terms of morbidity and mortality is unprecedented. The advances acquired through the knowledge of the mechanisms of the disease and the variety of therapeutic approaches contrast with the inability of private and public health systems in underdeveloped and even developed countries to achieve the goals of treatment. This paradox has been described in many sources: the surge of scientific advances contrast with an unprecedented amount of human suffering. Thus, a patient centered and an evidence based approach with the capacity to produce measurable clinical and economic outcomes is required. The purpose of this textbook is multiple: to offer a comprehensive resource covering all aspects of outpatient management; to address diabetes as a health problem from an epidemiological, economic and clinical perspective; to discuss the role of social determinants of health on the worldwide increase in diabetes; to highlight the challenges and obstacles in providing adequate care; and to outline a multidisciplinary approach to management in which medical visits retain their importance as part of a team comprising the patient, his or her family and a multidisciplinary group of health professionals who are able to move beyond the traditional approach of diabetes as a disease and greatly improve outcomes.

Book Stress and Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Stress and Cardiovascular Disease written by Paul Hjemdahl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to evaluate the concept of stress and provide tools for physicians to identify patients who might benefit from stress management. This will incorporate a detailed description of the physiological and pathophysiological consequences of acute and chronic stress that might lead to cardiovascular disease. The book will aim to critically evaluate interventional research (behavioural and other therapies) and provide evidence based recommendations on how to manage stress in the cardiovascular patient. Our intentions are to define and highlight stress as an etiological factor for cardiovascular disease, and to describe an evidence based "tool box" that physicians may use to identify and manage patients in whom stress may be an important contributing factor for their disease and their risk of suffering cardiovascular complications.
