Book Dehydroepiandrosterone DHEA and DHEA Sulfate Roles in Brain Function and Disease

Download or read book Dehydroepiandrosterone DHEA and DHEA Sulfate Roles in Brain Function and Disease written by Tracey A. Quinn and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the neuroactive steroids, dehydroepiandrosterone (3b-hydroxyandrost-5-ene-17-one, [DHEA]) and its sulfated metabolite DHEA sulfate (DHEAS) have been shown to be potent modulators of neural function, including neurogenesis, neuronal growth and differentiation, and neuroprotection. Highlighting the potential health significance of DHEA and DHEAS in humans, serum concentrations decrease steadily with age, with lowest concentrations present at the time many diseases of aging and neurodegeneration become apparent. This temporal association has led to the suggestion that pathology associated with cognitive decline, age-related neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and adult onset schizophrenia may, in part at least, be attributed to decreased secretion of DHEA. Animal studies suggest neuroprotective functions for DHEA and DHEAS through reduction of glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Reduced myelin loss and reactive gliosis after spinal cord injury by DHEA treatment also suggest a role for DHEA in the treatment of white matter pathologies such as multiple sclerosis. In this chapter, we discuss the physiological roles of DHEA and DHEAS in the central nervous system (CNS), their potential as neuroprotective hormones with reference to documented effects on excitotoxicity and oxidative stress, and their anti-glucocorticoid actions during chronic stress. The potential for metabolic derivatives of DHEA, such as estrogens and testosterone on brain function, and their contribution to neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative conditions are also discussed.

Book Use of Dietary Supplements by Military Personnel

Download or read book Use of Dietary Supplements by Military Personnel written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary supplements are widely available through a rapidly expanding market of products commonly advertised as beneficial for health, performance enhancement, and disease prevention. Given the importance and frequent evaluation of physical performance and health as a criteria to join and remain in the military, the use of these products by military personnel has raised concern regarding over-all and long-term efficacy and safety. This evaluation is especially difficult, as many of these supplements contain multiple ingredients, have a changing composition over time, or are used intermittently at doses difficult to measure. This book analyzes the patterns of dietary supplement use among military personnel, examines published reviews of the scientific evidence, and identifies those dietary supplements that are beneficial and/or warrant concern due to risks to health or performance. The book also recommends a system to monitor adverse health effects and a framework to identify the need for active management of dietary supplements by military personnel. Military policy makers, personnel, and recruits will find this book useful, as will nutritionists, athletes, and others working in strenuous environments.

Book Development of the Adrenal Gland and Brain of the Spiny Mouse in Relation to Dehydroepiandrosterone dhea Biosynthesis

Download or read book Development of the Adrenal Gland and Brain of the Spiny Mouse in Relation to Dehydroepiandrosterone dhea Biosynthesis written by Tracey Anne Quinn and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During development, DHEA has indeed been shown to have trophic effects on brain growth, and to have anti-glucocorticoid actions that diminish neurotoxicity and oxidative stress. The studies summarised in Chapter 6 determined for the first time in this species, if DHEA is produced de novo in the developing brain of the spiny mouse. Expression of P450c17 and cytochrome-b5 (Cytb5) - the enzyme and accessory protein responsible for the synthesis of DHEA - together with expression of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), were determined in the fetal brain at 25, 30, and 35 days of gestation, in the neonatal brain on the day of birth, and 80 days old adult brains by immunocytochemistry. Double-label immunofluorescence was used to determine co-localisation in neurons, astrocytes or oligodendrocytes. P450c17 bioactivity was determined using radioimmunoassay of conversion of pregnenolone to DHEA by explants of fetal, neonatal and adult brain. The fetal brain produced significantly more DHEA after 48 h in culture (22.46±2.0 ng/mg) than the adult brain (5.04±2.0 ng/mg; p

Book Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Psychiatry

Download or read book Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Psychiatry written by Philip R. Muskin and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Psychiatry will start psychiatrists and other mental health professionals on the journey toward a more complete understanding of the most common CAM treatments in use today. The alternative therapies discussed in this book pre-date our own conventional treatments by hundreds and even thousands of years. These therapies have been "conventional" medicine for hundred of millions of people who have used them throughout the centuries, and people continue to use them today. One of the few texts that provides an academic and practical review of complementary and alternative medicine, the book is written from the perspective of clinicians who practice in both traditional and alternative medicine. The book covers the major areas in CAM, including herbal medicine and nutrients, acupuncture, meditative therapies, and yoga. It provides the most important and up-to-date scientific data along with controversies that exist in the field. With all of the chapters extensively referenced, the book will serve as a tremendous resource for those interested in exploring these areas in greater depth. As evidenced by the statistics, patients today are taking increasingly active roles in managing their health care. They are using CAM therapies in the medical setting along with or in place of conventional treatment. They are using them for promoting wellness; for chronic conditions which they feel do not respond well to conventional approaches; and for more serious illnesses, as evidenced by the large number of inquiries being sent to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Psychiatry contains a thorough review of problems that may be encountered by the physicians treating these patients, and it also serves as a guide in advising patients who are seeking out CAM therapies. This book will appeal to a wide audience of professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nonpsychiatric physicians, and residents by providing a guide for treatment with nutrients and botanical preparations and the foundation for the use of meditation, acupuncture and yoga along with traditional psychiatric treatment.
