Book Social Formation in Dhaka 1985 2005

Download or read book Social Formation in Dhaka 1985 2005 written by Kamal Siddiqui and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the twenty-first century, more than fifty per cent of the world's population will live in an urban environment. Most of this new urban growth will take place in Asia and Africa, yet most governments in these two continents seem woefully unprepared for the challenges they will face in providing their urban citizens with the basic services and security from poverty, environmental degradation and crime. It is in this context that in-depth studies which lay bare the contours and characteristics of society and institutions in the urban setting of Third World countries assume importance and urgency. Most studies on urbanisation in developing countries concentrate on slums and shanty towns in isolation from the rest of the society. By contrast, Social Formation in Dhaka, 1985-2005 analyses urbanisation and urban society in a holistic manner, connecting the poor with the non-poor and delineating the change agents of the city. As the first longitudinal study of the social structure of any Third World Megacity, this book will be of interest to urban sociologists, policy-makers, NGOS, and researchers engaged in understanding the development in cities in the global south.

Book Geography Of Bangladesh

Download or read book Geography Of Bangladesh written by Haroun Er Rashid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its struggle for independence, Bangladesh became the focal point of world attention in the early 1970s. It emerged victorious, but its development was hindered by the after-effects of the war—the destruction of much of its infrastructure, problems of governmental change, and the enormous difficulties faced by government and aid officials in assembling a data base for long-range planning. Professor Rashid's book—the first major comprehensive geographic inventory of Bangladesh—provides the key elements for such a base. Emphasizing the rural and agricultural characteristics of the country, it also covers in depth its physiography, hydrography, climate, soils, land utilization, migration and settlement patterns, transportation infrastructure, and human and natural resources.

Download or read book Fight for Bangladesh written by Ziauddin M. Choudhury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bangladesh War of Liberation was fought in several fronts by people in all walks of life. While the main war is largely known by the battles fought by brave freedom fighters both inside and outside the borders of then East Pakistan, much of the war’s success depended on the resistance and random acts of bravery by people in all nooks and corners of the country. The ranks of these unknown and forgotten fighters for liberty were filled by students, farmers, small shop keepers, and village wives. They are the unsung heroes of the war of liberation who people may not remember. The author of this book spent much of the dark nine-month period as a young chief of civil administration two sub-districts (called sub-divisions) of the then Dhaka district- Munshiganj and Manikganj. Like the vast majority of his civil service colleagues working in the country that time he served under the watchful eyes of a malevolent army dictatorship, helplessly watching the atrocities as they continued to occur during those terrible months. Like all Bengali government officers working in the country that time he was a suspect in the eyes of the occupation forces and was subject to surveillance. While working through the difficult times the author also had the occasions to hear and witness some courageous acts of our people that in their own way registered a protest against the atrocities, and even frustrated the cruel agents of Pakistan Government. The articles in this book are the author’s personal accounts of events and occurrences in the most turbulent period of the national history of Bangladesh. Some of these are simply narrations of some dire events, some are stories of chicanery and treachery, and some are stories of bravery of people in the villages who suffered the tumultuous time. The book is an assembly of these articles around a common theme, and a message that 1971 was essentially a people’s war, a war we all fought to rid us of an evil that had descended on us, and had launched a wanton act of aggression and mayhem. The recollections are expected to help our new generation to realize that our freedom did not come cheap; and that the harrowing experience of their previous generation and the murderous sufferings they endured knew no gender or religious boundaries. All of the articles were published earlier in Dailies and Magazines in Bangladesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines globalization and urban cultures in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, from a socio-cultural view. It focuses on the evolving nature of urbanity in the city due to globalization and the global flow of information, while framing the changing patterns of everyday cultures and practices. The volume explores key linkages and factors in urban transformation; the history and heritage of Old Dhaka; globalization, diverse urban cultures and ethnic spaces; changes in food habits, clothing, health practices, and recreation; changing forms of festivals, marriages, and religious practices; the situation of indigenous people in Old Dhaka; and the roles that need to be played by NGOs, civil society, and the local government. With its rich ethnographic case studies and field-based evidence, it discusses the relations between technology-driven economic activities and increasing cultural homogenization. It traces developments induced by cultural globalization and includes contemporary debates along with comparisons of Asian and global perspectives. This book will be a useful resource for scholars and researchers of urban studies, city studies, urban sociology, social anthropology, cultural anthropology, political sociology, development studies, South Asian studies and cultural studies, and to those interested in Bangladesh.

Book New Communities for Urban Squatters

Download or read book New Communities for Urban Squatters written by C.L. Choguill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on the interrelatedness of planning and implementation, on how policymakers and planners can be more effective in solving problems of providing new homes and settlements for urban squatters in developing countries. It treats a subject which in this year of publication, The United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Home less, has attracted global interest and concern. New Communities for Urban Squatters helps us to understand the ways in which the planning process is being redefined as it moves into the mainstream of urban change and political decisionmaking. Resettlement of squatters in new urban communities is one option open to planners to meet the housing and settlement needs of low-income resi dents of Third World cities. In too many cases, however, the plans have failed to achieve their objectives for reasons which could have been foreseen and dealt with at the outset. For resettlement and new community building to be a feasible solution, this book argues, plan implementation as well as plan preparation must be considered as basic and inseparable parts of the planning process. Success depends on getting right the five fundamental aspects of planning which have Third World-wide significance: appropriate organizational structures and coordination, finance, tech nology, cultural understanding, and public participation. If not, failure is sure to follow.

Book The Dhaka Water Services Turnaround

Download or read book The Dhaka Water Services Turnaround written by Manoj Sharma and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Development Bank's investment program in the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority provided a breakthrough in approaching urban development, particularly the delivery of clean, reliable, affordable water and to the poor, no less. And not just a breakthrough for Dhaka or the rest of Bangladesh, but for the region of South Asia. This publication looks at the key success factors that other utilities are taking note of: the zonal approach to rehabilitating and managing urban water services, trenchless technology for expeditiously laying pipes, and how to connect the urban poor---and keeping them connected---through community-managed approaches.

Download or read book The Book of Dhaka written by Wasi Ahmed and published by Comma Press. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dhaka may be one of the most densely populated cities in the world - noisy, grid-locked, short on public amenities, and blighted with sprawling slums - but, as these stories show, it is also one of the most colourful and chaotically joyful places you could possibly call home. Slum kids and film stars, day-dreaming rich boys, gangsters and former freedom fighters all rub shoulders in these streets, often with Dhaka's famous rickshaws ferrying them to and fro across cultural, economic and ethnic divides. Just like Dhaka itself, these stories thrive on the rich interplay between folk culture and high art; they both cherish and lampoon the city's great tradition of political protest, and they pay tribute to a nation that was borne out of a love of language, one language in particular, Bangla (from which all these stories have been translated).
