Book excerpt: Previously published as The Last Flamecaller by Tori Harris. _________ Desperate tyrants often resort to desperate tactics ... regardless of their species. After suffering a near-catastrophic defeat by Terran Fleet Command, the Pelaran AI strain gambles on a bold, "hands-on" approach to controlling the destiny of a Human world ... On the pre-industrial world of Didara 4, Dryden Beck awakens alone in the depths of the Scarsdow Forest, knowing that he has murdered thousands of his own people, but with no memory of how or why. He soon discovers that he has been forever changed - modified against his will to serve as the most powerful weapon in the arsenal of a ruthless puppet master bent on total domination. Stripped of powers he never wanted but now desperately needs, Dryden finds himself caught in the middle of a war in which both sides - those he once sought to destroy as well as his former master who forced him to do so - see him as their most dangerous and hated adversary. To prove his allegiance, Dryden's only choice is to flee. It is a journey that will take him across a region where opposing sides seek to destroy one another wielding technologies introduced centuries before their time - supplied by a mysterious benefactor whose motivations remain unknown. Can this lone Human, with the help of a pair of enigmatic Grey aliens, regain control of the same deadly weapons he once used to slaughter his own people in time to save them? _________ Author's Note: The books in the TFC series build upon one another and are best experienced in the order in which they were released. I recommend reading TFS Ingenuity, TFS Theseus, TFS Navajo, TFS Fugitive, and TFS Guardian before starting DFV Ethereal. _________ DFV ETHEREAL is the sixth book of the Terran Fleet Command Saga by author Tori Harris. The story is typically associated with the military science fiction, space exploration science fiction, colonization, first contact, genetic engineering, space opera technothriller, galactic empire, or alien invasion categories.

Book excerpt: It's the year 2277.For fifty years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from seemingly random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, ultimately providing Humanity with the means to achieve faster-than-light travel. As we prepare to take our first, tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained. As the first Terran Fleet Command starship, TFS Ingenuity, completes its shakedown cruise, Captain Tom Prescott and crew stumble into a first contact situation. They learn that Earth is not the first civilization granted access to the stars before their time - and how this Faustian gift has led countless other worlds into centuries of interstellar war.Humanity's existence soon hangs in the balance as a powerful alliance assembles a preemptive military strike, believing it to be their only option to protect themselves ? from us. Prescott and his small, initially unarmed starship must serve as our only line of defense. Ingenuity is our only hope.

Download or read book Frontiers of Fundamental Physics written by M. Barone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympia conference Frontiers of Fundamental Physics was a gathering of about hundred scientists who carryon their research in conceptually important areas of physical science (they do "fundamental physics"). Most of them were physicists, but also historians and philosophers of science were well represented. An important fraction of the participants could be considered "heretical" because they disagreed with the validity of one or several fundamental assumptions of modern physics. Common to all participants was an excellent scientific level coupled with a remarkable intellectual honesty: we are proud to present to the readers this certainly unique book. Alternative ways of considering fundamental matters should of course be vitally important for the progress of science, unless one wanted to admit that physics at the end of the XXth century has already obtained the final truth, a very unlikely possibility even if one accepted the doubtful idea of the existence of a "final" truth. The merits of the Olympia conference should therefore not be judged a priori in a positive or in a negative way depending on one's refusal or acceptance, respectively, but considered after reading the actual of basic principles of contemporary science, new proposals and evidences there presented. They seem very important to us.

Book excerpt: - An ancient alliance under siege ... - A threat for which we are not prepared ... - And "Grey" aliens who are not at all what we expected. The enigmatic Greys have returned, bearing a host of stunning revelations regarding their role in Earth's history, the Pelarans, and Humanity's place in the cosmos. The Pelaran Alliance has effectively disbanded, and Pelara itself is now dominated by the same world-shaping AI originally created to manage its own cultivation program. Armed with this new information, Terran Fleet Command must decide if coming to Pelara's aid is worth risking a direct confrontation with the AI-controlled remnants of their once-mighty Alliance. Griffin, openly declaring his allegiance to both TFC and the world he has helped to build, agrees to accompany the Grey ship Ethereal on a high-risk recruiting operation spanning thousands of light years. Their mission: enlist the help of enough Guardian spacecraft to put an end to the out-of-control, tyrannical AI before its forces can reach the Earth. Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of TFS Fugitive, joined by allies both old and new, must reach Pelara and take the fight to the Alliance AI at the very center of its power. While in the Sol system, Admirals Patterson and Naftur fight a seemingly hopeless battle to save both Earth and Graca from certain destruction.

Download or read book Name Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry written by Jie Jack Li and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-12-27 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers important name reactions relevant to heterocyclic chemistry The field of heterocyclic chemistry has long presented a special challenge for chemists. Because of the enormous amount and variety of information, it is often a difficult topic to cover for undergraduate and graduate chemistry students, even in simplified form. Yet the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds and methods for their synthesis form the bedrock of modern medicinal chemical and pharmaceutical research. Thus there is a great need for high quality, up-to-date, and authoritative books on heterocyclic synthesis helpful to both the professional research chemist as well as the advanced student. Name Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry provides a one-stop repository for this important field of organic chemistry. The primary topics include three- and four-membered heterocycles, five-membered heterocycles including indoles, furans, thiophenes, and oxazoles, six-membered heterocycles including quinolines, isoquinolines, and pyrimidines, and other heterocycles. Each name reaction is summarized in seven sections: Description Historical perspective Mechanism Variations and improvements Synthetic utility Experimental References Authored by a team of world-renowned contributors - some of whom have discovered the very reactions they describe - Name Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry represents a state-of-the-art resource for students and researchers alike.

This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new perspective on Niels Bohr's interpretation of quantum mechanics as complementarity, and on the relationships between physics and philosophy in Bohr's work. The importance of quantum field theory for Bohr's thinking has not been adequately addressed in the literature on Bohr. This book provides clarification of Bohr's writings (which usually pose problems of reading), and an analysis of the role of quantum field theory in Bohr's thinking.
