Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well before “the twist” had become M. Night Shyamalan’s cinematic calling card and spoiler alerts were de rigueur for online movie reviews, there was The Sixth Sense. Written and directed by Shyamalan, who had been working on the script since he was 25, the 1999 film was a landmark in on-screen storytelling and the evolution of the horror and supernatural thriller genres. With a cast that included Bruce Willis, Mischa Barton, Toni Collette, Donnie Wahlberg, and Haley Joel Osment, it earned six Oscar nominations and made Shyamalan a household name overnight, launching a career that would include such movies as Signs, Unbreakable, The Visit, Split, and Old. In I See Dead People, entertainment journalist Mackenzie Nichols weaves together interviews with Shyamalan, the movie’s stars, crew members, and others into an oral history of how this iconic movie was made. Nichols gives a collective account of the unusual filming process—principal photography took place in the soon-to-be-demolished Philadelphia Convention Center, in which cast and crew experienced inexplicable paranormal phenomena—traces the movie’s surprising success and lasting influence, and even speaks with professional mediums about how it shaped public perception of the paranormal. The result is a fascinating, kaleidoscopic, and at times spooky portrait of how one film unexpectedly changed the course of modern moviemaking.

Book Classical Vertigo

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark William Padilla
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2024-03-18
  • ISBN : 1666915920
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Classical Vertigo written by Mark William Padilla and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo has dazzled and challenged audiences with its unique aesthetic design and startling plot devices since its release in 1958. In Classical Vertigo: Mythic Shapes and Contemporary Influences in Hitchcock’s Film, Mark William Padilla analyzes antecedents including: (1) the film’s source novel, D’entre les morts (Among the Dead), (2) the earlier symbolist novel, Rodenbach’s Bruges-la-morte, and (3) the first-draft screenplay of Maxwell Anderson, a prominent Broadway dramatist and Hollywood scenarist from the 1920s to the 1950s. The presence of Vertigo amid these texts reveals and clarifies how themes from Greco-Roman antiquity emerge in Hitchcock’s project. Padilla analyzes narrative figures such as Prometheus and Pandora, Persephone and Hades, and Pygmalion and Galatea, as well as themes like the dark plots of Greek tragedy, to reveal how Hitchcock used allusive form to construct an emotionally powerful experience with an often-minimalist script. This analysis demonstrates that Vertigo is a multifaceted work of intertextuality with artistic and cultural roots extending into antiquity itself.

Book The Dewey Chronicles Reader

Download or read book The Dewey Chronicles Reader written by Tim Wood and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dewey Webster is admitted country hick from Tennessee. He has torn up numerous bars, hired a mob lawyer to settle a divorce, acted on off-off-off-Broadway, and has written pulp fiction stories. The large-bodied Dewey's adventures take place in 1947. Previously told in the "Dewey Chronicles" series, these stories are combined in one volume for the first time. Follow Dewey as he becomes a covert operator for the U.S. government; fights evil extra-terrestrial aliens; defends his dog in court; and goes back in time to the medieval ages. While Dewey is hard-headed and is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, he has unusual insight and a straightforward approach to life that serves him well. A good right-hand haymaker punch comes in handy, too. Give Dewey a pickup, a shotgun and a good "dawg," and he'll take on anything or anyone at any time.

Book Dirty Wars

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Beck
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2009-12-01
  • ISBN : 0803226691
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Dirty Wars written by John Beck and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, the American West has become the nation’s military arsenal, proving ground, and disposal site. Through a wide-ranging discussion of recent literature produced in and about the West, Dirty Wars explores how the region’s iconic landscapes, invested with myths of national virtue, have obscured the West’s crucial role in a post–World War II age of “permanent war.” In readings of western—particularly southwestern—literature, John Beck provides a historically informed account of how the military-industrial economy, established to protect the United States after Pearl Harbor, has instead produced western waste lands and “waste populations” as the enemies and collateral casualties of a permanent state of emergency. Beck offers new readings of writers such as Cormac McCarthy, Leslie Marmon Silko, Don DeLillo, Rebecca Solnit, Julie Otsuka, and Terry Tempest Williams. He also draws on a variety of sources in history, political theory, philosophy, environmental studies, and other fields. Throughout Dirty Wars, he identifies resonances between different experiences and representations of the West that allow us to think about internment policies, the manufacture of atomic weapons, the culture of Cold War security, border policing, and toxic pollution as part of a broader program of a sustained and invasive management of western space.
