Book Significance of Geology to Gas Production from Devonian Shales of the Central Appalachian Basin

Download or read book Significance of Geology to Gas Production from Devonian Shales of the Central Appalachian Basin written by Terrance Hamilton-Smith and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devonian and Lower Mississippian shales of the central Appalachian Basin produce gas from various fine-grained reservoirs enhanced by natural fracturing. Fracture development was due to Allegheneian reactivation of basement faults in the autochthonous terrane north of the Allegheny Front and west of the Burning Springs-Mann Mountain detachment. Basement faults were inherited both from the Grenville orogeny and from Rome Trough rifting during the opening of the Iapetus Ocean. Deposition occurred in two successive foreland basins of the Acadian orogeney, restricted to the west by the Cincinnate Arch and filled from the east by the synorgenic deposits of the Catskill Delta. Organic-rich mud accumulated in sediment-starved anaerobic conditions accentuated by persistent algal blooms. Interbedded sital turbidites from the delta front formed submarine fans influenced by syndepositional movement on reactivated basement faults. Deep burial in the Permian and hydrothermal flow from basement faults produced variable degrees of thermal maturation of kerogen encompassing the oil window. Reservoirs range from fine-grained sandstone to fractured black shales. Aside from fracture development, black shale production is constrained by gas adsorption from kerogen and permeability reduction due to blocking by trapped oil. Recommendations are made for effective geological contributions to gas production.

Book Occurrence of Oil and Gas in Devonian Shales and Equivalents in West Virginia

Download or read book Occurrence of Oil and Gas in Devonian Shales and Equivalents in West Virginia written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Devonian, an epicontinental sea was present in the Appalachian basin. The Catskill Clastic Wedge was formed in the eastern part of the basin by sediments derived from land along the margin of the continent. Three facies are recognized in the Catskill Clastic Wedge: (1) a red-bed facies deposited in terrestrial and nearshore marine environments; (2) a gray shale and sandstone facies deposited in a shallow- to moderately-deep marine environment; and (3) a dark-gray shale and siltstone facies deposited in the deepest part of the epicontinental sea. Oil and natural gas are being produced from Devonian shales in the western part of West Virginia and from upper Devonian sandstones and siltstones in the north-central part of the state. It is suggested that in addition to extending known areas of gas production, that drilling for natural gas be conducted in areas underlain by organic-rich shales and thick zones of interbedded siltstone and shale in the Devonian section in central, southern, and western West Virginia. The most promising areas for exploration are those areas where fractures are associated with folds, faults, and lineaments. 60 references.

Book The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia

Download or read book The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia written by David A. Waples and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large scale, practical uses of natural gas were initially introduced by innovators Joseph Pew and George Westinghouse for the steel and glass industries in Pittsburgh, and local gas companies evolved from individual wells to an interstate supply network acquired by Rockefeller's Standard Oil interests. Natural gas is now a prevalent part of American markets and with the production from the Marcellus shale is filling the critical void left by a lack of new coal, oil, and nuclear power facilities. This vital American enterprise began in the Appalachian states as an accidental and underestimated byproduct of the oil rush of 1859. This book explores the evolution and significance of the natural gas industry to the present day.
