Download or read book A Quiet Word written by Tamasin Cave and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q. What’s worth £2,000,000,000, answers to no-one and operates out of public sight? A. Britain’s influence industry The corporate takeover of democracy is no conspiracy theory – it’s happening, and it affects every aspect of our lives: the food we eat, the places we live, the temperature of our planet, how we spend our money and how our money is spent for us. And much more. A Quiet Word shows just how effectively the voice of public interest is being drowned out by the word in the ear from the professional persuaders of the lobbying industry. And if you’ve never heard about them, that’s because the most effective lobbying goes unnoticed. A Quiet Word shines the brightest of lights into one of the darkest and least-understood corners of our political culture. It is essential, urgent, authoritative reading for anyone interested in our democracy and where this country is heading. And by showing how influence is constructed, it puts power back in your hands.
Download or read book Moving Sites written by Victoria Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Sites explores site-specific dance practice through a combination of analytical essays and practitioner accounts of their working processes. In offering this joint effort of theory and practice, it aims to provide dance academics, students and practitioners with a series of discussions that shed light both on approaches to making this type of dance practice, and evaluating and reflecting on it. The edited volume combines critical thinking from a range of perspectives including commentary and observation from the fields of dance studies, human geography and spatial theory in order to present interdisciplinary discourse and a range of critical and practice-led lenses through which this type of work can be considered and explored. In so doing, this book addresses the following questions: · How do choreographers make site-specific dance performance? · What occurs when a moving body engages with site, place and environment? · How might we interpret, analyse and evaluate this type of dance practice through a range of theoretical lenses? · How can this type of practice inform wider discussions of embodiment, site, space, place and environment? This innovative and exciting book seeks to move beyond description and discussion of site-specific dance as a spectacle or novelty and considers site-dance as a valid and vital form of contemporary dance practice that explores, reflects, disrupts, contests and develops understandings and practices of inhabiting and engaging with a range of sites and environments. Dr Victoria Hunter is Senior Lecturer in Dance at the University of Chichester.
Download or read book Sustainability and Short term Policies written by Stefan Sjöblom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a profound change within the sphere of government and societal regulation in recent years. Traditional hierarchical government has been challenged by new governance instruments relying on negotiations instead of command and control. Alongside this development there has been a change in the time-framing of politics and steering. Traditional politics implicitly has been based on stability and permanence while new forms of governance explicitly are based on just-in-time actions such as projects and issue-based collaborations in networks and programs. This book analyses the implications of this shortening of time frames, focusing particularly on spatial policy interventions. Spatial policies have a special relevance when it comes to governance and new forms of societal steering. On the one hand, the local (geographical) level in politics is the principal battleground for the struggle between top down and bottom up approaches and aspirations. On the other hand, many of the most burning issues of our time require a global, strategic approach, for example, climate change, resource depletion, population growth are anchored in space and the physical world. Whether and how short-term spatial approaches can achieve sustainable development outcomes is thus a critical question, and forms the focus of this volume. The book examines the characteristics of temporary policy measures across a range of rural, urban and regional contexts, in four continents: Europe, North America, Oceania and Africa. The outcomes and effects of these policies and interventions are analysed, particularly focusing on the tension between short-term interventions and long-term effects.

Download or read book Third Party Litigation Finance written by Anthony J. Sebok and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buy a new version of this textbook and receive access to the Connected eBook on Casebook Connect, including lifetime access to the online ebook with highlight, annotation, and search capabilities. Access also includes an outline tool and other helpful resources. Connected eBooks provide what you need most to be successful in your law school classes. Litigation finance sits at the intersection of many well-known subjects within the law school curriculum: contracts, torts, civil procedure, evidence, professional responsibility, insurance, and capital markets. There are no professionally produced materials for a professor who wants to teach an entire semester-long course on litigation finance. This casebook is an attempt to fill that gap. Its ten chapters provide a foundation for a two- or three-credit class, although many of the chapters could also be used individually as supplemental material for a free-standing unit on litigation finance in another course, such as torts, civil procedure, or the law of lawyering. Notwithstanding the fact that the law of litigation finance is rapidly developing as investment in litigation and legal services grows, the cases and other materials contained in this book will remain relevant and useful to anyone trying to teach students about this important new body of law. Benefits for instructors and students: Careful selection of the leading cases in the United States about the development and current law of assignment and litigation finance. Diverse selection of secondary source material, including major law review articles, as well as reports and advocacy materials from supporters and critics of litigation finance. Notes following the readings help the student progress through the materials in a logical and coherent manner.

Download or read book Cold Hungry and in the Dark written by Bill Powers and published by New Society Publisher. This book was released on 2013-06-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An energy industry insider delivers hard truths about the reality of fracking. Conventional wisdom has North America entering a new era of energy abundance thanks to shale gas. But has industry been honest? Cold, Hungry and in the Dark argues that declining productivity combined with increasing demand will trigger a crisis that will cause prices to skyrocket, damage the economy, and have a profound impact on the lives of nearly every North American. Relying on faulty science, bought-and-paid-for-white papers masquerading as independent research and “industry consultants,” the “shale promoters” have vastly overstated the viable supply of shale gas resources for their own financial gain. This startling exposé, written by an industry insider, suggests that the stakes involved in the Enron scandal might seem like lunch money in comparison to the bursting of the natural gas bubble. Exhaustively researched and rigorously documented, Cold, Hungry and in the Dark: · Puts supply-and-demand trends under a microscope · Provides overwhelming evidence of the absurdity of the one hundred-year supply myth · Suggests numerous ways to mitigate the upcoming natural gas price spike The mainstream media has told us that natural gas will be cheap and plentiful for decades, when nothing could be further from the truth. Forewarned is forearmed. Cold, Hungry and in the Dark is vital reading for anyone concerned about the inevitable economic impact of our uncertain energy future. “Powers’s step-by-step dismantling of the abundance myth ought to alarm policymakers, corporate managers, investors, business owners, and concerned citizens alike.”—Kurt Cobb, author of Prelude and contributor to The Christian Science Monitor
