Book excerpt: An important, though neglected, figure in twentieth-century British horror fiction, Sir Charles Birkin (1907-1985) began his literary career as editor of the popular – and now highly collectible – Creeps series of horror anthologies in the 1930s, which featured tales by well-known writers such as H.R. Wakefield, Lord Dunsany and Russell Thorndike, as well as contributions by Birkin himself. A master of the conte cruel, often with a Grand Guignol finish, Birkin found true horror not in ghosts or the supernatural but in the hearts of men and women. Never before reprinted and extremely scarce, Devils’ Spawn (1936) collects sixteen of Birkin’s stories, many of them first published in the Creeps volumes, including the horror gems “The Terror on Tobit” and “The Harlem Horror”. Birkin’s collection The Smell of Evil (1965) is also available from Valancourt Books.

Book excerpt: The Devil's Spawn The Devil's Spawn is Captain Al Belcher's faithful account of the Zircon Army's campaign to win Uneeda and seize a three-ton hoard of gold. The Uneeda battle was one of many in a bitter war for supremacy that had raged for a century between races. The hemocyanin creatures, Ichneumons, want to rule the planet, Erden. To accomplish their goal, the devils wagged genocide on humans and war on the Zircon Empire. The empire has recently forced the Ichneumons from the strategic important Erie River valley, but the cat-eyed devils still control the inland sea and valuable western gold mines around Uneeda. The Zircon army orders Captain Belcher and his men to harass that Ichneumon garrison and stop their enslavement and murder of ranchers, farmers, and the Indigenous tribes. The twisted Ichneumon religion of blood sacrifices, and human greed for gold and slaves, exacerbates the brutality of the Uneeda campaign. Covetous aristocrats, rare otters, murderous chiefs, and friendly females complicate Al's mission.

Book Jews in East Norse Literature

Download or read book Jews in East Norse Literature written by Jonathan Adams and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 1368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Danes and Swedes in the Middle Ages imagine and write about Jews and Judaism? This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200–1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in different texts, especially miracle tales, exempla, sermons, and Passion treaties, is examined to show how writers employed the figure of the Jew to address doubts concerning doctrine and heresy, fears of violence and mass death, and questions of emotions and sexuality. Volume 2 contains diplomatic editions of 54 texts in Old Danish and Swedish together with translations into English that make these sources available to an international audience for the first time and demonstrate how the image of the Jew was created in medieval Scandinavia.
