Download or read book Yoke written by Jessamyn Stanley and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding self-acceptance both on and off the mat. In Sanskrit, yoga means to “yoke.” To yoke mind and body, movement and breath, light and dark, the good and the bad. This larger idea of “yoke” is what Jessamyn Stanley calls the yoga of the everyday—a yoga that is not just about perfecting your downward dog but about applying the hard lessons learned on the mat to the even harder daily project of living. In a series of deeply honest, funny autobiographical essays, Jessamyn explores everything from imposter syndrome to cannabis to why it’s a full-time job loving yourself, all through the lens of yoke. She calls out an American yoga complex that prefers debating the merits of cotton versus polyblend leggings rather than owning up to its overwhelming Whiteness. She questions why the Western take on yoga so often misses—or misuses—the tradition’s spiritual dimension. And reveals what she calls her own “whole-ass problematic”: Growing up Baháí, loving astrology, learning to meditate, finding prana in music. And in the end, Jessamyn invites every reader to find the authentic spirit of yoke—linking that good and that bad, that light and that dark.
Download or read book Visions of Cannabis Control written by Jon Heidt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Cannabis Control argues that cannabis prohibition is the result of moral panic that has been instigated, perpetuated, and sustained in ways that are difficult to dislodge. The book documents the history of these cannabis policies and explores the impact of issues such as racism, labelling, and stigmatization. Stan Cohen argued that reforms designed to replace carceral tendencies within correctional institutions can instead extend such approaches into our communities. The idea that criminal justice reforms often reproduce what they were intended to disrupt can be applied to the cannabis revolution currently underway around the world. Racial disparities in arrests persist, exacerbated by laws that make it legal to possess cannabis but illegal to consume it anywhere but in your home. In this book, the authors argue that too often, cannabis liberalization comes at the cost of expanding paternalistic public health models and abstention-based diversion programs. The goal of dismantling and disrupting illicit markets has undermined onerous regulations, anaemic marketing efforts, and failure to promote consumer-centred approaches. Emphasizing public health goals ahead of market conditions complicates legal cannabis as an industry. To understand the future of cannabis policy, Visions of Cannabis Control examines the experience of six countries and several US states through the lens of criminological theory, recent research, and practice. The book presents several solutions for responsible regulation concluding that sustaining reform will require a more inclusive approach ensuring those affected by cannabis policies are consulted, respected, and involved.

Download or read book Dying Breeds written by Kirk Jones and published by JournalStone. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a world inside every photograph. This world is static. Every person, frozen in space and time. Every heart, still...except Miles Singleton’s. Miles has lived in photographs since he discovered his ability to enter any picture he touched. He’s felt the warmth of life radiating from the bodies therein, coupled with the stillness of death. He has carved his way to their very cores to confirm they are human, inside and out. The inhabitants are flesh and blood, but they’re only facsimiles of people in the world outside. The violence Miles inflicts upon them has no bearing on their counterparts. But there are rumors of a camera that wreaked havoc on the silent film industry. It is said that anyone and anything the camera captured on film has died or disappeared, except a handful of actresses. Among previous owners, Bridgette “Lola” Louise is one of the last alive. She believes the camera captures a piece of the subject’s soul, and has kept the camera under lock and key since her career’s end. Miles remembers hearing the stories as a child, and believes that if he finds “the camera that killed the industry” of silent film, he’ll be able to see his violence manifest in both worlds.

Download or read book Hiding in Plain Sight written by I. M. Enough and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For author I. M. Enough, self-hatred began at a young age, and he turned to food to escape. He dodged the bottle until his early twenties, but once he began drinking, there was no stopping him. He sacrificed morals, family, and livelihood for the next drink. He combined that with a tortuous relationship that lasted for a decade too long, and became the laughingstock of his own life. The asinine things he did made for captivating stories that lie within the walls of this book. Hiding in Plain Sight shares his story while addressing several misunderstood issues about addiction. Enough touches on alcoholic thinking, a process describing how your brain changes with alcohol. He describes in detail how he beat the ignition interlock device to still drive drunk, and how close he was to becoming a serial killer. All his tales lead to a profound, enthralling, and unexpected ending. By sharing his personal history, Enough hopes to help change your worldview and perhaps make you a little more empathetic to what others are going through. He is proof that anything is possible and that a little hope can go a long way. This personal narrative presents a man’s journey as he overcame alcoholism, obesity, trauma, and codependence.
