Book Device task Fidelity and Transfer of Training

Download or read book Device task Fidelity and Transfer of Training written by Wallace W. Prophet and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to evaluate the training effectiveness of two cockpit procedures training devices, differing greatly in their physical fidelity (and, consequently, cost), in the teaching of ground cockpit procedures for a twin-engine, turboprop, fixed wing aircraft. One group of students received training in cockpit procedures in a relatively expensive, sophisticated, high-fidelity, computerized cockpit procedures trainer, while another group were trained in an inexpensive, low-fidelity mockup of the aircraft cockpit. Their subsequent performance in the actual aircraft was compared with that of a control group who received all of their procedures training in the aircraft. Results indicated that both training devices produced significant transfer of training, in terms of error and time reduction, in performance in the actual aircraft. There were no significant differences in training effectiveness of the two devices, in spite of their great differences in physical fidelity and cost. Implications for the design of procedures training devices and associated training programs are discussed. (Author).

Book Simulation Fidelity in Training System Design

Download or read book Simulation Fidelity in Training System Design written by Robert T. Hays and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business, academia, industry, and the military require well trained personnel to function in highly complex working environments. To reduce high training costs and to improve the effectiveness of training, training system developers often use sophisticated training media such as, simulators, videodisks, and computer-based instruction. The designers of these training media are continually striving to provide maximum training effectiveness at minimum cost. Although literature is available on the implementation and use of specific training media, there is little guidance on a major feature that is central to these media. All of these media present the learner with an interactive simulation of the real world. Effective training system design can be facilitated if the requirements of the real-world task are properly included in training. A conceptual bridge is necessary to link these actual task requirements to the characteristics of the training system. This book provides such a conceptual bridge. The need for improved training is critical in the area of equipment operation, maintenance, and decision making tasks. For example, the importance of improved operator training in the nuclear power industry has become paramount since the Three Mile Island accident and the more serious accident at the Chernobyl reactor in the U. S. S. R. Technology, such as the availability and power of computers, offers a wider variety of training options, but requires additional training system design decisions.

Book Training Effectiveness as a Function of Training Device Fidelity

Download or read book Training Effectiveness as a Function of Training Device Fidelity written by D. R. Baum and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of reduced training devices fidelity on learning and performance of a perceptual-motor maintenance task. Bicycle wheel truing was chosen for study. Five devices including the actual equipment were procured, or designed and built. The device fidelity was systematically varied in physical and functional similarity to the actual equipment. One hundred naive high school and vocational technical school students served as paid subjects; 20 were trained in each device condition. All subjects were then tested on the actual equipment. The results indicated that significant skill was acquired under all training conditions. The amount of skill acquired did not differ as a function of overall fidelity (i.e., with physical and functional similarity at the same level). However, further analysis in which these two dimensions were separated showed a significant effect of physical similarity. High physical similarity resulted in higher performance on the transfer of training task than low physical similarity. Further research was proposed in the context of specific experiments. Finally, recommendations for the organization and communication of research results via a computerized database were presented.

Book Fundamental Issues in Defense Training and Simulation

Download or read book Fundamental Issues in Defense Training and Simulation written by George Galanis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense forces have always invested a great deal of their resources in training. In recent times, changes in the complexity and intensity of operations have reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that warfighters are adequately prepared for the environments in which they are required to work. The emergence of new operational drivers such as asymmetric threats, urban operations, joint and coalition operations and the widespread use of military communications and information technology networks has highlighted the importance of providing warfighters with the competencies required to act in a coordinated, adaptable fashion, and to make effective decisions in environments characterized by large amounts of sometimes ambiguous information. While investment in new technologies can make available new opportunities for action, it is only through effective training that personnel can be made ready to apply their tools in the most decisive and discriminating fashion. There are many factors which can have an impact on the efficacy of training and many issues to consider when designing and implementing training strategies. These issues are often complex and nuanced, and in order to grasp them fully a significant investment of time and energy is required. However, the requirement to respond quickly to ever-changing technology, a high operational tempo and minimal staffing may preclude many in today's defense forces from seeking out all such resources on their own. This edited collection provides brief, easy-to-understand summaries of the key issues in defense training and simulation, as well as guidance for further reading. It consists of a collection of short essays, each of which addresses a fundamental issue in defense training and simulation, and features an up-to-date reference list to enable the reader to undertake further investigation of the issues addressed. In essence, this book provides the optimum starting point, or first resource, for readers to come to terms with the important issues associated with defense training and simulation. The contributions are written by leading scholars from military research institutions in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as selected researchers from academic and private sector research institutions.

Book Fidelity of Simulation and Transfer of Training

Download or read book Fidelity of Simulation and Transfer of Training written by Siegfried J. Gerathewohl and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document is concerned with the several kinds of flight simulators available today which are valuable tools for research, training and proficiency determination. They range from simple trainer type devices, which are useful for the learning of specific tasks, to very sophisticated ground-based facilities and aircraft used for crew training under simulated environmental and operational conditions. The various perceptual phenomena and performance modes observed indicate that it is not physical similarity of the devices but psychologic, physiologic, and operational realism which determine fidelity in simulation. In general, the amount of transfer of training appears to be closely related to the degree of fidelity which can be provided. (Author).

Book Engineering Psychology and Human Performance

Download or read book Engineering Psychology and Human Performance written by Christopher D. Wickens and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming connections between human performance and design Engineering Psychology and Human Performance, 4e examines human-machine interaction. The book is organized directly from the psychological perspective of human information processing. The chapters generally correspond to the flow of information as it is processed by a human being--from the senses, through the brain, to action--rather than from the perspective of system components or engineering design concepts. This book is ideal for a psychology student, engineering student, or actual practitioner in engineering psychology, human performance, and human factors Learning Goals Upon completing this book, readers should be able to: * Identify how human ability contributes to the design of technology. * Understand the connections within human information processing and human performance. * Challenge the way they think about technology's influence on human performance. * show how theoretical advances have been, or might be, applied to improving human-machine interaction
