Il s’agit donc d’étudier intrinsèquement la combustion et plus spécifiquement de suivre l’évolution en concentration du carburant et des espèces chimiques intermédiaires formées et consommées lors de la combustion dans un moteur à combustion interne. Nous avons pratiqué des prélèvements directement dans la chambre de combustion pendant les différentes phases du cycle et analysé la nature des gaz prélevés. La méthodologie élaborée au cours de ces travaux de thèse inclue la conception d’un outil innovant de prélèvement dans le cylindre et le développement d’un système de spéciation des hydrocarbures par chromatographie en phase gazeuse couplé à de la spectrométrie de masse. Après avoir été validé, la méthodologie a été appliquée à l’étude de la combustion sur un moteur fonctionnant en mode HCCI et sur un moteur essence à allumage commandé. L’objectif de ces mesures est d’apporter une meilleure maîtrise et compréhension de la combustion et des données de validations pour la modélisation.

Book excerpt: Les industries automobile et aéronautique sont confrontées dans le futur proche à une raréfaction des carburants fossiles, ainsi qu'au problème de pollution de l'environnement émis par les systèmes propulsifs. Pour s'affranchir de ces problèmes, l'utilisation de carburants alternatifs censés apporter rendement et préservation de l'environnement, s'est considérablement développée ces derniers temps. Cependant, leurs impacts sur la pollution, consommation et rendement de combustion ne sont toujours pas clairement établis. En particulier, il est nécessaire de quantifier leurs effets sur les phénomènes physiques clés à la base des processus que sont l'évaporation du carburant liquide et le mélange carburant vapeur/air. L'analyse expérimentale de ces processus physiques nécessite alors l'emploi de diagnostics lasers non-intrusifs et quantitatifs, permettant de mesurer des grandeurs physiques comme les distributions spatiales instantanées de température et de concentration du carburant en phase vapeur. Parmi les techniques optiques les plus attrayantes, l'imagerie de fluorescence induite par laser (PLIF) offre de nombreux avantages. L'objectif de la thèse a été, dans un premier temps, de caractériser les propriétés spectroscopiques de quatre carburants multi-composants, le kérosène (Jet A1), le Biomass-to-Liquid (BtL), le Diesel et l'Ester Méthylique Huile Végétale (EMHV) qui, mis à part le premier, possèdent des propriétés spectroscopiques encore peu connues. L'exploitation de leurs propriétés de fluorescence a ensuite permis d'évaluer leurs capacités à fournir des signaux autorisant la mesure de la température et de la concentration du carburant en phase vapeur. Dans un second temps, un étude exhaustive des propriétés de fluorescence de plusieurs cétones (3-pentanone, benzophénone) et aromatiques (fluoranthène, acénaphtène, naphtalène, 1,2,4-triméthylbenzène...) en fonction de la température et du quenching de l'oxygène moléculaire, a été réalisée à pression atmosphérique pour identifier les traceurs fluorescents potentiellement adaptés au dosage optique des quatre carburants. Les données photophysiques collectées ont ensuite été utilisées pour parfaire l'établissement des couples carburants/traceurs fluorescents ainsi que les stratégies de mesures de température et de concentration de carburant associées. L'exploitation des données acquises lors de différentes campagnes de mesures a ainsi mis en évidence la possibilité de détecter simultanément la fluorescence de plusieurs molécules aromatiques (mono-, di- et/ou tri-aromatique) naturellement présentes ou ajoutées artificiellement dans les carburants. Le cas du Diesel a nécessité le développement d'un carburant modèle pour permettre une étude de son évaporation. L'application de cette nouvelle approche PLIF a été validée sur un injecteur hélicoptère LPP de nouvelle génération fonctionnant avec trois carburants spécifiques que sont le Jet A1, le BtL et un mélange Jet A1/BtL.

The Government originally announced proposals for modernising the London Underground network system via Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements in 1998. Three contracts were drawn up with: (i) Tube Lines for the maintenance and renewal of the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Northern Lines; (ii) with Metronet Rail BVC for the maintenance and renewal of the Bakerloo, Central, Victoria & Waterloo & City Lines; (iii) with Metronet Rail SSL, responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the "sub-surface lines": the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan & East London Lines. These PPP Agreements, 30 years in duration, were arrangements to maintain, renew and upgrade parts of London Underground by private sector infrastructure companies (Infracos), whilst London Underground is responsible for services to customers. The PPP Agreements also set out a performance-related incentive and penalty scheme to remunerate the Infracos for the improvements they make to the network. In May 2007, Metronet admitted an overspend of £1 billion and was refused access to loan facilities by the banks. It then made a reference to the PPP Arbiter, which in turn triggered an Extraordinary Review (which occurs when extra costs are incurred above the level allowed for the bid). Metronet put in a bid for £551m but the PPP Arbiter provisionally concluded that a sum of £121m was appropriate. Metronet subsequently went into administration on 18 July 2007. The report sets out a number of conclusions and recommendations, including: contracts that were supposed to deliver 35 station upgrades, in fact delivered only 14, 40% of the requirement; stations that were supposed to cost Metronet SSL £2m, cost £7.5m, with only 65% of schedule track renewal accomplished; the Committee criticises the consequences of the imposition of PPP on Transport for London, as a "lamentable state of affairs", with the future of most of London Underground's upgrade and maintenance work in doubt; the Committee states, that the Government should remember the failure of Metronet before it considers entering similar arrangements; that the Government should publish a candid analysis of the events preceding Metronet's collapse and its consequences; the Committee believe that the PPP model was flawed and probably inferior to traditional public-sector management; that the Government needs to prioritise transparency and clarity to taxpayers and ensure that any future contracts result in clear accountability.

Book excerpt: The unlikely refuge of Shanghai, the only city in the world that did not require a visa, was buffeted by the struggle between European imperialism, Japanese aggression, and Chinese nationalism. Ernest G. Heppner's compelling testimony is a brilliant account of this little-known haven. Although Heppner was a member of a privileged middle-class Jewish family, he suffered from the constant anti-Semitic undercurrent in his surroundings. The devastation of "Crystal Night" in November 1938, however, introduced a new level of Nazi horror and ended his comfortable world overnight. Heppner and his mother used the family's resources to escape to Shanghai. Heppner was taken aback by experiences on the ocean liner that transported the refugees to Shanghai: he was embarrassed and confounded when Egyptian Jews offered worn clothing to the Jewish passengers, he resented the edicts against Jewish passengers disembarking in any ports on the way, and he was unprepared for the poverty and cultural dislocation of the great city of Shanghai. Nevertheless, Heppner was self-reliant, energetic, and clever, and his story of finding niches for his skills that enabled him to survive in a precarious fashion is a tribute to human endurance. In 1945, after the liberation of China, Heppner found a responsible position with the American forces there. He and his wife, whom he had met and married in the ghetto, arrived in the United States in 1947 with only eleven dollars but boundless hope and energy. Heppner's account of the Shanghai ghetto is as vivid to him now as it was then. His admiration for his new country and his later success in business do not, however, obscure for him the shameful failure of the Allies to furnish a refuge for Jews before, during, and after the war.
