The need for an updated synthesis on paleoceanographic science is urgent, owing to the huge and very diversified progress made in this domain during the last decade. In addition, no comprehensive monography still exists in this domain. This is quite incomprehensible in view of the contribution of paleoceanographic research to our present understanding of the dynamics of the climate-ocean system. The focus on the Late Cenozoic ocean responds to two constraints. Firstly, most quantitative methods, notably those based on micropaleontological approaches, cannot be used back in time beyond a few million years at most. Secondly, the last few million years, with their strong climate oscillations, show specific high frequency changes of the ocean with a relatively reduced influcence of tectonics. The first volume addresses quantitative methodologies to reconstruct the dynamics of the ocean andthe second, major aspects of the ocean system (thermohaline circulation, carbon cycle, productivity, sea level etc.) and will also present regional synthesis about the paleoceanography of major the oceanic basins. In both cases, the focus is the "open ocean leaving aside nearshore processes that depend too much onlocal conditions. In this first volume, we have gathered up-to-date methodologies for the measurement and quantitative interpretation of tracers and proxies in deep sea sediments that allow reconstruction of a few key past-properties of the ocean( temperature, salinity, sea-ice cover, seasonal gradients, pH, ventilation, oceanic currents, thermohaline circulation, and paleoproductivity). Chapters encompass physical methods (conventional grain-size studies, tomodensitometry, magnetic and mineralogical properties), most current biological proxies (planktic and benthic foraminifers, deep sea corals, diatoms, coccoliths, dinocysts and biomarkers) and key geochemical tracers (trace elements, stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, and U-series). Contributors to the book and members of the review panel are among the best scientists in their specialty. They represent major European and North American laboratories and thus provide a priori guarantees to the quality and updat of the entire book. The range of interest is large; it encompasses the weathering of geologic formations by the action of water, the manner in which certain minerals come to occur in commercial quantities, the fate of chemical contaminants once they enter an aquifer, optimal methods to remove (or at least contain) these contaminants, and ways to improve the recovery of hydrocarbons from reservoirs. While it is impossible to treat all of the applications of geochemical flow in a single volume, it is possible to treat certain features of simplified reactive flow that occur in nearly all applications. Understanding these features will help interpret much more complex flows and providing the basis for this understanding is the goal of this text. This book is a culmination of a research project conducted at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) over the past 20 years. It has also been used as a text in a graduate course at UT on geochemistry and flow, taught by each of the editors over a period of 10 years. The reader will undoubtedly benefit from the knowledge flow that this progression from research project, via classroom, to text represents.

The book also addresses an existing need for a method of predicting thermal behaviour from other more easily measurable properties, cementation of sandstones and sources of silica during the diagenesis. Presented here are correlations developed for predicting the thermal conductivity of consolidated sandstones from the knowledge of density, porosity, permeability, and the formation resistivity factor.

In this monograph, the boundaries of the definitions of a petrologist, geochemist, geophysicist or a mineralogist have been willfully eliminated to bring them all under the spectrum of "high-pressure geochemistry" when they deal with any material (quintessentially a chemical assemblage) - terrestrial or extraterrestrial - under the conditions of high-pressure and temperature. Thus, a petrologist using a spectrometer or any instrument for high-pressure studies of a rock or a mineral, or a geochemist using them for chemical synthesis and characterization, is better categorized as a "high-pressure geochemist" rather than any other kind of disciplinarian.The contents of this monograph bring together, under one cover, apparently disparate disciplines like solid-earth geophysics and geochemistry as well as material science and condensed-matter physics to present a thorough overview of high pressure geochemistry.
