Book Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Development in East Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Development in East Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union written by David Turnock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the achievement of further EU and NATO enlargement, a critical political and economic lens is now focused on East Central Europe and, to a lesser extent, the other former communist states. Economic growth in each transition state - and more broadly the region - pivots around the prospects for foreign direct investment (FDI), with decisions on where foreign investors will locate their projects now vitally important. This book - the first one devoted to a geographical survey concentrating specifically on FDI in the region - brings together a wide range of prominent authors from the US and Europe, including the late Frank Carter, to provide a timely and critical examination of the importance of foreign investment. It presents a detailed analysis of location patterns and their significance for regional development, with particular emphasis given to the important socioeconomic and political consequences of uneven distribution of FDI across the region and its constituent countries. Divided into two parts, the book first deals with general overarching themes and issues before applying these to more specific country case studies. The second part deals with regional studies, focusing broadly on the Western Balkans and Bulgaria, before looking at specific economic sectors in individual countries.

Book Peace Conflict and Developments in the Western Balkans The Role of EU Integration

Download or read book Peace Conflict and Developments in the Western Balkans The Role of EU Integration written by Reina Zenelaj Shehi and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Balkan countries are characterized by an entanglement of different national, ethnic and religious groups. Within all Balkan states, nationalist rivalries have been and are exploited by political leaders as a propaganda tool when faced with internal unrest or unpopularity. Yet, the proximity of ethnic communities to their countries of ethnic origin tie all the Balkan states into a common problem: the spillover effect of regional insecurity. Existing and future disputes require an exhaustive survey of national, ethnic, religious, territorial, economic and political problems, and this is precisely what this volume sets out to do.

Book Russian Economic Reform

Download or read book Russian Economic Reform written by James Leitzel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitions from socialism to capitalism are complex, both in theory and practice. Russian Economic Reform enables the reader to come to a much better understanding of these momentous changes, by providing a clear and accessible account of the major features of transition. It argues that attempts to portray the reform process is a disaster are misconceived, because they fail to take account of just how badly the pre-reform economy was doing. Many of the problems that are emerging now have their antecedents in the earlier economic system.

Book The Development of Positive Obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights by the European Court of Human Rights

Download or read book The Development of Positive Obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights by the European Court of Human Rights written by Alastair Mowbray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years the European Court of Human Rights has been developing,at an expanding pace, positive obligations under the European Convention. This monograph seeks to provide a critical analysis of the burgeoning case law concerning positive obligations, a topic which is relatively uncharted in the existing literature. Positive obligations require many different forms of action by member states, ranging from effectively investigating killings through to protecting peaceful demonstrators from violent attacks by their opponents. The contemporary significance of these obligations is graphically illustrated by the fact that it is the obligation upon states to provide fair trials to determine civil and criminal proceedings within a reasonable time that is the source of the overwhelming majority of complaints to the European Court in recent years. The study examines the legal bases and content of key positive obligations. Conclusions are then drawn concerning the reasons for the development of these obligations and areas of potential expansion are identified.
