Book La Dette Ext rieure

Download or read book La Dette Ext rieure written by ... Carreau-Shaw and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical importance of the subject of 'The External Debt' in contemporary international life goes without saying. On the analytical level, the interest and indeed the difficulty of the subject lies in the need for a multidisciplinary approach, where political, financial and legal aspects are closely linked and require a clear understanding. From the purely legal point of view, the traditional and largely artificial boundaries between private and public law, between private international law and public international law and even, more generally, between municipal and international law are clearly marked here. In this respect any analyst has to be a complete jurist, and this collection of essays (in English and French) is an illustration of this fact.

Book Providing Enterprise Development and Financial Services to Women

Download or read book Providing Enterprise Development and Financial Services to Women written by Lynn Bennett and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, raising the productivity of women became an integral element of the World Banks overall strategy for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable growth. The number and scope of Bank projects to provide women with enterprise development, financial services, and social intermediation services grew accordingly. This paper reviews 27 such projects in East and South Asia and provides a succinct assessment of successes, failures, and surprises. The authors identify patterns and trends in the design of projects, examine the reasons for such trends, and draw lessons about how such projects can be more effective in delivering financial services to women in these countries. Many of these women are an increasingly vital source--or the sole source--of income for their families, but they are often overlooked in the implementation of small development projects. The authors draw eight key lessons for future Bank projects to provide enterprise development and financial services. They recommend that such projects be considered one element of a coordinated country-specific strategy for poverty alleviation.

Book 1992 World Economic and Financial Surveys

Download or read book 1992 World Economic and Financial Surveys written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews recent developments in private market financing for developing countries. Bank creditors themselves have been more amenable to restructuring in an environment where secondary market discounts on bank claims were falling significantly below the level of bank provisioning. This has allowed banks to realize substantial book profits by participating in debt operations. Debt conversions have also played a substantial role in reducing commercial bank debt. The pace of such conversions, however, has slowed over the past year in response to lower secondary market discounts on external debt and to a drop in privatization-related conversions. The re-entry to international capital markets by certain middle-income countries that had experienced debt-servicing difficulties gathered momentum over the past year. Total bond issues in international markets by the main re-entrants accounted for over half of issues by developing countries in this period. In contrast to the experience in securities markets, new bank lending to market re-entrants has remained limited and is confined mainly to short-term trade lines or project financing.

Book Public Sector Decentralization

Download or read book Public Sector Decentralization written by Jerry M. Silverman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is addressed to a broad audience of development professionals who are interested in both the substance of decentralisation issues and their impact on economic development. The paper summarises experience with alternative decentralisation arrangements and suggests a new analytical framework for assessing the impact of such arrangements on the performance of economic development programmes and projects. Consideration of alternative forms of decentralisation reveals the need to clarify and establish priorities among economic and political objectives. The potential for conflict among multiple objectives and the need to assess decentralisation policies in terms of acceptable trade-offs among those objectives summarises the importance of this paper.

Book Irrigation induced Salinity

Download or read book Irrigation induced Salinity written by Dina L. Umali and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a synthesis of 15 success stories in the production, processing, and marketing of high-value food products (HVF) in developing countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. High-value food products, such as fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, dairy products, and vegetable oils, are defined as having high intrinsic value or a high rate of value added through processing. Trade in these products has expanded while trade and prices for other agricultural products, such as most staple crops, have stagnated or declined. The growing trade in HVF has prompted policymakers in developing countries to examine more closely how they can expand and diversify their exports of these products. This study explores the technical, organizational, and commercial challenges facing those in HVF export development. It identifies common market and institutional factors that have contributed to the growth and international competitiveness in HVF trade. Particular note is made of the roles of the private and public sectors and of the effect of the policy environment. It examines the effect of institutional coordination on the stages of production, processing, and trade. An annex summarizes 12 case studies of the development and performance of food commodity markets. It includes export of fresh vegetables from Kenya in the 1960s, shrimp from Thailand in the 1970s, and processed tomatoes from Chile in the 1980s.
