Book Development of Tropical Forages in Veracruz Mexico Agronomic Approach for the New Forage Legume Cratylia Argentea

Download or read book Development of Tropical Forages in Veracruz Mexico Agronomic Approach for the New Forage Legume Cratylia Argentea written by Braulio Valles-de la and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastures in the coast of the Gulf of Mexico are characterized by native species (Paspalum spp., Axonopus spp., et cetera). These, are limited by productivity due to their low nutritional quality and poor persistence on grazing. The adaptation of new grass and legume species is essential to improve the productivity of animal production. An initial assessment should include the climatic and edaphic adaptation to the region. Species, such as Andropogon gayanus, Pueraria phaseoloides, Centrosema spp., Arachis pintoi, and Cratylia argentea, were evaluated, showing encouraging results compared to native species; our efforts were focused on C. argentea. Several research methods were applied to meet the objectives outlined for each experiment, including methodologies for the establishment of new species. All these trials were subject to rigorous experimental designs, and data were analyzed statistically, using the most adequate programs. These experiences allow us to visualize the most promising materials for the specific conditions of climate and soil. The potential results of this new forage species stand out. Also, these experiments allowed the development of new management practices to improve the productivity of the animal production systems of the region. C. argentea demonstrated its high forage value as a species suitable for silvopastoral systems.

Book excerpt: In livestock management, the production of forage plants is undoubtedly the most efficient way to produce products of animal origin with quality and economic viability. We hope that the readers of the book "New Perspectives in Forage Crops" will have a good reading and appreciate the information provided on forage production, since the book draws on the expertise of different specialists of the area, who discuss the following aspects: fertilization, semiarid region production, forage species selection, nitrogen fixation, grasses, legumes, cacti, drought, etc. The authors of the book are of different nationalities and provide important information and diverse perspectives on the subject of forage farming.

Book Tropical Forage Legumes

Download or read book Tropical Forage Legumes written by John R Lazier and published by CABI. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of legume use in agricultural production in the tropics lags far behind the temperate areas and extensive research over recent decades has aimed to rectify the lack of available leguminous fodder species available for heavy clay soils. This book draws together that research and explores the importance of heavy clay soils to agricultural productivity in the tropics and subtropics and the identification of adapted, productive forage legumes for these environments. Providing an invaluable example of how a global search for adapted and productive forage germplasm has been - and can be - undertaken, and allowing access to a significant body of knowledge that was acquired before the digitalization of reports, this book will be a key resource for new scientists and experienced researchers in the areas of agriculture and forage agronomy.

Book Forage Legumes

Download or read book Forage Legumes written by J.V. Singh and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forage crops are important for the economy of our country as these crops provide major nutritional base in the livestock ration. The National Commission on Agriculture has also emphasized in its report that in order to achieve the so-called ‘White Revolution’ it will be necessary to provide required emphasis on research relating to the improvement and management of forages. India’s average availability of milk per head per day comes to only 100 ml as against our requirement of 220 ml per day. With the increase in world human population and economic growth, the demand for animal products such as milk, meat and eggs in the human diet is bound to increase. The success of dairy and poultry programmes will largely depend on the availability of required forages and feeds since almost 60-65% investment is invariably on these essential requirements. A recent estimate indicates that the deficiency in total forage need is about 40% of dry forage and about 24% of green fodder. This deficit is likely to increase further as (i) the area under forage crop is declining because of the pressing problems of growing cereals and other cash crops to meet the increasing pressure of population growth, (ii) the animal population is increasing every year by almost 2% (iii) cultivable land is decreasing due to urbanization and industrial growth and (iv) forages in future are going to have competition from liquid fuel shortage. Recent interests in the development of technology for the economic conversion of cellulosic material to liquid fuels, however, have given rise to estimates of several hundred million metric tons of lignocellulosic material being used annually for their new developments. With the development of these technologies, the impact on ruminants production would be substantial, so there is going to be a vital challenge to meet the requirement of forages in the near future.

Book The Role Of Centrosema Desmodium And Stylosanthes In Improving Tropical Pastures

Download or read book The Role Of Centrosema Desmodium And Stylosanthes In Improving Tropical Pastures written by Robert L Burt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This integrated collection describes the importance of forage legumes for pasture development and improvement in the tropics and subtropics. Leading agronomists review the magnitude of the need for pasture improvement; tropical and subtropical soil and climate environments; reports of the successful use of legumes in pasture development in a wet and a dry tropical environment; and the scope of the problem in terms of area to be developed and development logistics required. Three legume genera, Centrosema, Desmodium, and Stylosanthes, are discussed in detail--information is presented on taxonomy, adaptation, distribution, productivity, and usefulness--and considerable emphasis is placed on Rhizobium germplasm resources for these genera. A concluding section of technical essays addresses special considerations in using tropical legumes in pasture development and presents a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to legume exploration and evaluation.
