Book Development of Thulium Fiber Lasers for High Average Power and High Peak Power Operation

Download or read book Development of Thulium Fiber Lasers for High Average Power and High Peak Power Operation written by Robert Andrew Sims and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the development of a laser system utilizing chirped pulse amplification (CPA) to achieve record level energies and peak powers for ultrashort pulses in Tm-doped fiber. A mode-locked oscillator was built to generate femtosecond pulses operating with pJ energy. Pulses generated in the mode-locked oscillator were limited to low energies and contained spectral modulation due to the mode-locking mechanism, therefore, a Raman-soliton self-frequency shift (Raman-SSFS) amplifier was built to amplify pulses, decrease the pulse duration, and spectrally clean pulses. These pulses were amplified using chirped pulse amplification (CPA) in which, limiting factors for amplification were examined and a high peak power system was built. The primary limiting factors of CPA in fibers include the nonlinear phase accumulation, primarily through self-phase modulation (SPM), and gain narrowing. Gain narrowing was examined by temporally stretching pulses in a highly nonlinear fiber that both stretched the pulse duration and broadened the spectrum. A high peak power CPA system amplified pulses to 1 [microjoule] energy with 300 fs compressed pulses, corresponding to a peak power [greater than]3 MW. High peak power pulses were coupled into highly nonlinear fibers to generate supercontinuum.

This book comprehensively covers the basics, technology and applications of fiber lasers including up-to-date developments in both academia and industry and is aimed to serve as both an introduction and research aid for graduate students, engineers, and scientists who are new to this field and also for veterans in the field

Book High Power Ytterbium and Thulium Fiber Lasers

Download or read book High Power Ytterbium and Thulium Fiber Lasers written by Justin S. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High power fiber lasers have revolutionized many areas of both basic research and industry with their high power, high brightness output and capability for a compact, monolithic design. These systems are often run in multimode operation with few constraints on output. However, for many directed energy applications, such as spectral beam combining, the necessary laser parameters are far more stringent, requiring systems with state-of-the-art characteristics, such as single transverse mode operation, narrow linewidth and multi-kW output powers. Currently, further growth in output power of fiber laser systems at 1 and 2 [micrometer] is hindered by various nonlinear and thermal limitations within the fiber gain medium. Specifically, 1 [micrometer] systems are primarily hindered by transverse mode instability, while 2 [micrometer] lasers at high average powers often encounter an effect known as modulation instability. This dissertation explores the power scaling potential of both Yb-doped and Tm-doped fiber lasers along with related applications. Power scaling of two different Yb:fiber amplifiers is examined, where first, a novel confined-doping fiber geometry is used to generate 450 W single mode output, and second, through a demonstration of a Yb:fiber amplifier with > 2200 W output power and quasi-single mode beam quality. At 2 [micrometer], a new pumping architecture known as in-band pumping is utilized in an effort to take Tm-doped fiber amplifiers first to the multi-100 W level and then into the multi-kW regime. An in-band pumped laser is developed and characterized with over 75 W output power and > 80% slope efficiency. The last laser system constructed is a tunable, narrow linewidth Tm-doped fiber laser used to systematically induce and study the effects of thermal blooming. Results obtained from scanning the wavelength across individual atmospheric absorption resonances are presented, along with time-resolved data obtained at a fixed wavelength. Finally, two candidate fiber designs are presented for power scaling of in-band pumping at 2 [micrometer] to the multi-kW power level. Numerical studies detail the performance of these two fiber designs at high average powers and their ability to suppress the onset of modulation instability. Taken together, the results discussed in this dissertation further the science of fiber lasers for directed energy applications.

Book Peak Power Scaling of Nanosecond Pulses in Thulium Based Fiber Lasers

Download or read book Peak Power Scaling of Nanosecond Pulses in Thulium Based Fiber Lasers written by Christian Gaida and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thulium based fiber lasers represent a promising alternative for pulse energy scaling and high peak power generation with ytterbium based systems at 1 [micrometer]. Advantages of thulium arise from the operation at longer wavelengths and a large gain bandwidth (1.8-2.1 [micrometer]). Nonlinear effects, such as self phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering and stimulated Brillouin scattering generally limit peak power scaling in fiber lasers. The longer wavelength of thulium fiber lasers and large mode field areas can significantly increase the nonlinear thresholds. Compared to 1 [micrometer] systems, thulium fiber lasers enable single mode guidance for two times larger mode field diameter in step index fibers. Similar behavior is expected for index guiding thulium doped photonic crystal fibers. In this work a novel thulium doped rod type photonic crystal fiber design with large mode field diameter ([greater than] 50 [micrometer]) was first characterized in CW-lasing configuration and then utilized as final amplifier in a two stage master oscillator power amplifier. The system generated MW-level peak power at 6.5ns pulse duration and 1kHz repetition rate. This world record performance exemplifies the potential of thulium fiber lasers to supersede ytterbium based systems for very high peak power generation in the future. As part of this work a computer model for the transient simulation of pulsed amplification in thulium based fiber lasers was developed. The simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. The computer model can be used for efficient optimization of future thulium based fiber amplifier designs.

Book Power Scaling of Large Mode Area Thulium Fiber Lasers in Various Spectral and Temporal Regimes

Download or read book Power Scaling of Large Mode Area Thulium Fiber Lasers in Various Spectral and Temporal Regimes written by Timothy S. McComb and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High power thulium fiber lasers are interesting for a myriad of applications due to their potential for high average output power, excellent beam quality, compactness, portability, high operating efficiency and broad, eye-safe spectral range from 1.8-2.1 microns. Currently, the majority of thulium laser research effort is being invested into scaling average output powers; however, such output powers are being scaled with no degree of control on laser system output spectrum or temporal behavior. Thulium fiber laser technology is not useful for many of its most important applications without implementation of techniques enabling tunable, narrow spectral widths with appropriate pulse durations for particular applications. This work outlines several techniques for spectral control of thulium fiber lasers and investigates scaling of average laser powers while using these techniques to maintain a desired spectral output. In addition, an examination of operation in both nanosecond and picosecond pulsed regimes and scaling of average powers and pulse energies in these regimes to useful power levels is conducted. The demonstration of thulium fiber laser systems for applications in frequency conversion and spectral beam combination is also discussed. In addition to the experimental results, theoretical modeling of thulium fiber amplifier operation, simple thermal management analysis, as well as practical fiber and system design considerations for future power scaling are presented. Experimental and theoretical results of this work will enable the successful design of future extremely high power spectrally and temporally controlled thulium fiber laser systems.

Download or read book High Power Optics written by Victor V. Apollonov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basics, realization and materials for high power laser systems and high power radiation interaction with matter. The physical and technical fundamentals of high intensity laser optics and adaptive optics and the related physical processes in high intensity laser systems are explained. A main question discussed is: What is power optics? In what way is it different from ordinary optics widely used in cameras, motion-picture projectors, i.e., for everyday use? An undesirable consequence of the thermal deformation of optical elements and surfaces was discovered during studies of the interaction with powerful incident laser radiation. The requirements to the fabrication, performance and quality of optical elements employed within systems for most practical applications are also covered. The high-power laser performance is generally governed by the following: (i) the absorption of incident optical radiation (governed primarily by various absorption mechanisms), (ii) followed by a temperature increase and response governed primarily by thermal properties and (iii) the thermo-optical and thermo-mechanical response of distortion, stress, fracture, etc. All this needs to be understood to design efficient, compact, reliable and useful high power systems for many applications under a variety of operating conditions, pulsed, continuous wave and burst mode of varying duty cycles. The book gives an overview of an important spectrum of related topics like laser resonator configurations, intermetallic optical coatings, heat carriers for high power optics, cellular materials, high-repetition-rate lasers and mono-module disk lasers for high power optics.

Book New Architectures for High Brightness Laser Emission

Download or read book New Architectures for High Brightness Laser Emission written by Patrick Roumayah and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their high beam quality, compactness, and simplicity, the development of ytterbium fiber lasers has dominated the field of Directed Energy (DE) and high brightness continuous wave (CW) lasers in general for the last 10 years. This work has produced many 10’s of kilowatts diffraction limited emission by way of spectral or coherent beam combining of many individual channels. However, as the need arises for even higher power deployable systems, on the order of 100’s of kilowatts, the appearance of the Transverse Mode Instability (TMI) appears to be a limiting factor. In addition, the danger to bystanders in the usually uncontrollable environment associated with directed energy demands considerations for eye-safety in any such system.
