Book Development of the Railroads of North America and of Their Control by the State Classic Reprint

Download or read book Development of the Railroads of North America and of Their Control by the State Classic Reprint written by James Douglas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of the Railroads of North America and of Their Control by the State Commissioners had learned how to make the railroads and canals subserve party politics rather than the public welfare, by political assessments on employees, with the inevitable em ployment of unnecessary men to swell the contribution, and over load the payrolls, by the liberal distribution of passes, and by using other means of conferring favors to shippers and parti sans. Thus political corruption absorbed the revenues of the canals and the railroads, and resulted, after an agonizing death struggle, in the demise of the state ownership of railroads in Pennsylvania. To-day the only other railroad north of the Mexican Boundary owned by the state is the Intercolonial Rail road of Canada. Be the reason what it may, it has never been made to pay - sometimes not even its legitimate operating ex penses. Will the experiment of state ownership in Mexico be more successful? The following extracts as to early Railroads in Pennsylvania are from The Traveller's Guide, Saratoga, 1833. The net income was sufficient to pay a reasonable rate of return on securities and to attract new capital when needed. New lines. I am going to throw my colors to the breeze at the very beginning and say that I am unalterably opposed to Government ownership and operation of railroads. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railroads: Four Phases of Their History It would not be far amiss to say that the gen eral surmise that the steam locomotive was the most important device for effecting carriage by land is partly mistaken. What was antecedently necessary to the art of land conveyance was the lessening of the friction of movement. This was essentially accomplished by the use of the railed track laid on a durable foundation. Had the steam locomotive never been invented, the railed track over which the flanged wheel rides would allow five to six pounds of energy exerted in the direction of motion to move a load of two thou sand pounds, and at rates of speed otherwise wholly unattainable. The addition of giant motor mechanisms such as the steam or electric locomo tive capable of delivering enormous tractive power at the drawbar enormously multiplies our capacity for effecting land carriage. But of the two the railway track is the more essential. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the American Rail and Track: As Illustrated by the Collection in the U. S. National Museum In considering the improvement in methods of transportation, I am led to think that there is a tendency to overestimate the benefits aris ing from the invention and improvement of the locomotive, and to overlook what has been done by those who devoted time and thought to the development of the various systems of permanent way. The improvement made in track construction in England during the first quarter of the century made the introduction of the locomotive there possible.
