Book Global Education Reform

Download or read book Global Education Reform written by Frank Adamson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from Linda Darling-Hammond, Michael Fullan, Pasi Sahlberg, and Martin Carnoy, Global Education Reform is an eye-opening analysis of national educational reforms and the types of high-achieving systems needed to serve all students equitably. The collection documents the ideologically and educationally distinctive approaches countries around the world have taken to structuring their education systems. Focusing on three pairs of case studies written by internationally acclaimed experts, the book provides a powerful analysis of the different ends of an ideological spectrum----from strong state investments in public education to market-based approaches. An introductory chapter offers an overview of the theories guiding both neoliberal reforms such as those implemented in Chile, Sweden and the United States with efforts to build strong and equitable public education systems as exemplified by Cuba, Finland and Canada. The pairs of case studies that follow examine the historical evolution of education within an individual country and compare and contrast national educational outcomes. A concluding chapter dissects the educational outcomes of the differing economic and governance approaches, as well as the policy implications.

Book Implementing Deeper Learning and 21st Century Education Reforms

Download or read book Implementing Deeper Learning and 21st Century Education Reforms written by Fernando M. Reimers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a comparative analysis of recent large scale education reforms that broadened curriculum goals to better prepare students for the 21st century. The book examines what governments actually do when they broaden curriculum goals, with attention to the details of implementation. To this end, the book examines system level reforms in six countries at various levels of development. The study includes system level reforms in jurisdictions where students achieve high levels in international assessments of basic literacies, such as Singapore and Ontario, Canada, as well as in nations where students achieve much lower levels, such as Kenya, Mexico, Punjab-Pakistan and Zimbabwe. The chapters examine system-level reforms that focus on strengthening the capacity to teach the basics, as in Ontario and Pakistan, as well as reforms that aim at building the capacity to teach a much broader set of competencies and skills, such as Kenya, Mexico, Singapore and Zimbabwe. The volume includes systems at very different levels of spending per student and reforms at various points in the cycle of policy implementation, some just starting, some struggling to survive a governmental transition, and others that have been in place for an extended period of time. From the comparative study of these reforms, we aim to provide an understanding of how to build the capacity of education systems to teach 21st century skills at scale in diverse settings.

Book The Development of Ontario Schools

Download or read book The Development of Ontario Schools written by Kenneth A. Leithwood and published by Ontario Ministry of Education. This book was released on 1987 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study examines the development and implementation of secondary education policy in Ontario as defined in "Ontario Schools: Intermediate and Senior Divisions (OSIS)--1984." Data were gathered for the period from 1980 when the Secondary Education Review Project (SERP) was initiated, to 1984 when the policy outlined in OSIS was to be fully implemented. Data were drawn from relevant documents, interviews with 19 knowledgeable persons, and a survey of Ontario secondary school principals. A survey questionnaire about the factors and conditions that affect policy implementation was distributed to 259 secondary school principals from 53 randomly selected school boards throughout Ontario. Usable returns were received from 159 principals (60 percent). Results indicate that principals' personal beliefs and professional experiences dominate the decision-making process and increase in importance in the later stages of the implementation process. The data on OSIS implementation indicates that the administrative aspects of OSIS were perceived by principals to have been fully implemented by 1986 but that the philosophical intent of the policy had yet to be implemented within courses and integrated into classroom activities. Included with the text are 7 figures and 19 tables. A total of 11 pages of references are attached to the 2 sections of the report. (MLF)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years there have been several changes in the educational system of Ontario: a reorganization of the Department of Education, the abolition of the school section, the establishment of post-secondary institutions of applied arts and technology, and the reform of Grade 13. Others are in prospect: the abolition of Grade 13 departmental examinations, the requirement that all elementary school teachers must have a university degree, and the establishment of an educational television network. These changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Representing less a break with tradition than a logical expansion of it, they are developments that are consistent with the rationale of the system as it has evolved in the course of one hundred and fifty years. This study is concerned with the nature and significance of these changes in relation to the dimensions and organization of the system itself. It describes the system as it exists today, identifies those features of it which are either unique or distinctive, and explains by reference to their historical development how these unusual features have come to occupy their present position. The author also investigates the disadvantages as well as the advantages of the present approach to education in Ontario, pointing out that the system has become such a vast complex that it is exposed to the dangers of fragmentation and compartmentalization. The basic problem is one of co-ordination, which could be remedied by closer liaison between government departments and by the establishment of improved communications between educational institutions. This account is a valuable contribution to the public debate on education in Ontario.
