Book Development of the Microwave Radiative Transfer Program for Cloudy Atmospheres Applications to DMSP SSM T Channels

Download or read book Development of the Microwave Radiative Transfer Program for Cloudy Atmospheres Applications to DMSP SSM T Channels written by Kuo-Nan Liou and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A microwave radiative transfer program for cloudy and precipitating atmospheres applicable to the DMSP SSM/T channels has been developed. The microwave transfer program takes into account the simultaneous contributions of multiple scattering and absorption by hydrometeors and absorption due to molecular oxygen and water vapor in the atmosphere. Sensitivity analyses have been carried out to investigate the effects of the rainfall rate, cloud thickness, and cloud location on the upwelling brightness temperature over land and ocean surfaces for two different atmospheric profiles. Over the land surface, it is shown that increasing the cloud liquid water content and cloud thickness significantly reduces the brightness temperatures for SSM/T channels 1 - 3. Over the ocean surface, however, the brightness temperatures for channels 1 - 3 are increased as the cloud liquid water content increases and reach to maximum values depending on the cloud thickness involved. Moreover, we show the importance of the cloud position and the atmospheric temperature profile on the brightness temperature values. In addition, investigation of the effects of precipitation on the temperature retrieval using both the theoretically simulated values and real SSM/T data has also been carried out on the basis of a statistical method. The hypothetical retrieval experiments reveal that the temperatures close to the surface suffer increased degradation as the rainfall rate increases. This finding is further supported by the analysis employing the real SSM/T data for a number of case studies in which temperature profiles from radiosondes are available for comparisons. (Author).

Book Development of Infrared and Microwave Techniques for Cloud Parameter Inference from Satellite Imagery and Sounder Data

Download or read book Development of Infrared and Microwave Techniques for Cloud Parameter Inference from Satellite Imagery and Sounder Data written by Kuo-Nan Liou and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents research to improve estimates of cloud parameters when both microwave and infrared data are available from weather satellites. The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) will have both types of data in 1983 with the first flight of the SSM/I multispectral microwave imager and improved cloud estimates could then be available to the AFGWC automated cloud analysis known as 3DNEPH. In this report, radiative transfer programs have been improved so that microwave channels can be simulated in a realistic manner. Also, the results of simulations have been compared to measurements from the ESMR, SCAMS, and HIRS sensors on the Nimbus VI satellite, which was the most complete set of microwave and infrared data available at the time of this study. The first area is concerned with the investigation of the effect of clouds and precipitation on the Nimbus VI ESMR channel and the use of ESMR vertical and horizontal polarization components for the determination of the liquid water content and cloud thickness. In conjunction with these objectives, we have developed a microwave radiative transfer program taking into account the polarization effect. The second area deals with the use of both infrared and microwave channels for the cloud parameter inference parameterizations. The infrared and microwave radiative transfer programs are successively developed for retrieval of the high and low cloud top heights and thicknesses and the cloud liquid water content from selected HIRS and SCAMS channels of the Nimbus VI satellite.

Book 3D Radiative Transfer in Cloudy Atmospheres

Download or read book 3D Radiative Transfer in Cloudy Atmospheres written by Alexander Marshak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in three-dimensional cloud radiation over the past few decades are assessed and distilled into this contributed volume. Chapters are authored by subject-matter experts who address a broad audience of graduate students, researchers, and anyone interested in cloud-radiation processes in the solar and infrared spectral regions. After two introductory chapters and a section on the fundamental physics and computational techniques, the volume extensively treats two main application areas: the impact of clouds on the Earth's radiation budget, which is an essential aspect of climate modeling; and remote observation of clouds, especially with the advanced sensors on current and future satellite missions.

Book Investigation of the Forward Radiative Transfer Problem Utilizing DMSP and Nimbus 6 Data

Download or read book Investigation of the Forward Radiative Transfer Problem Utilizing DMSP and Nimbus 6 Data written by Kuo-Nan Liou and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison programs involving the computed radiances and brightness temperatures, utilizing the measured temperature and mixing ratio profiles from radiosonde, and the colocated observed data are carried out for the DMSP SSH (infrared) and SSM/T (microwave) sounders. In addition, a parallel comparison program using the Nimbus 6 HIRS and SCAMS data also is performed independently to examine the probable discrepancies between computations based on the conventional transfer equation and satellite observations. Appreciable discrepancies between computations and observations are shown for the SSH 15 micron CO2 temperature channels whose weighting functions peak below about 16 km. These descrepancies also are supported by the comparison results from the Nimbus 6 HIRS 15 micron CO2 channels and to a limited extent the DMSP SSM/T microwave sounders.

Book Application of Differential Inversion to DMSP Microwave Sounder Data

Download or read book Application of Differential Inversion to DMSP Microwave Sounder Data written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperature profiles obtained by Differential Inversion (DI) applied to SSM/T data have unacceptably large deviations from co-located radiosonde observations. These deviations arise due to the small number of available SSM/T channels and from the requirement for well determined surface emissivities, which have not been available heretofore. Recent results by Felde and Pickle on surface emissivity determination using SSM/I data suggest the possibility of using those surface emissivity determinations as part of the data input to DI. Such a multispectral approach to DI would retain DI's advantages of computational efficiency and direct connections to the physical content of the equation of radiative transfer.

Book A Research Program on Radiative Transfer Model Development in Support of the ARM Program Progress Report No 3 1 November 1992 31 October 1993

Download or read book A Research Program on Radiative Transfer Model Development in Support of the ARM Program Progress Report No 3 1 November 1992 31 October 1993 written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research effort is to develop radiative transfer models that are consistent with ARM spectral radiance measurements for clear and cloudy atmospheres. Our approach is to develop the model physics and related databases with a line-by-line model in the context of available spectral radiance measurements. The line-by-line model then functions as an intermediate standard to both develop and validate rapid radiative transfer models appropriate to GCM applications. A preprint of an extended abstract for the 1994 AMS volume describing a Quality Measurement Experiment using the ARM spectral data is included as an attachment.
