Book Multi axis Substructure Testing System for Hybrid Simulation

Download or read book Multi axis Substructure Testing System for Hybrid Simulation written by Riadh Al-Mahaidi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the multi-axis substructure testing (MAST) system, a simulator developed at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, which provides state-of-the-art technology for large-scale hybrid testing of structures under realistic scenarios depicting extreme events. The book also demonstrates the responses of physical specimens while they serve as part of the virtual computer model of the full structure subjected to extreme dynamic forces. Experimental studies using the MAST system are expected to enhance design and construction methods and significantly improve the repair and retrofitting of structures endangered by natural disasters and man-made hazards, providing a direct benefit to society by improving public safety and the re silience of the built environment. An additional benefit is increased sustainability in the form of reduced direct and indirect economic losses and social and environmental impacts in the face of extreme events. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced practitioners in the fields of structural earthquake engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and experimental dynamics, including seismic qualification.

Book Role of Seismic Testing Facilities in Performance Based Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Role of Seismic Testing Facilities in Performance Based Earthquake Engineering written by Michael N. Fardis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays research in earthquake engineering is mainly experimental and in large-scale; advanced computations are integrated with large-scale experiments, to complement them and extend their scope, even by coupling two different but simultaneous tests. Earthquake engineering cannot give answers by testing and qualifying few, small typical components or single large prototypes. Besides, the large diversity of Civil Engineering structures does not allow drawing conclusions from only a few tests; structures are large and their seismic response and performance cannot be meaningfully tested in an ordinary lab or in the field. So, seismic testing facilities should be much larger than in other scientific fields; their staff has to be resourceful, devising intelligent ways to carry out simultaneously different tests and advanced computations. To better serve such a mission European testing facilities and researchers in earthquake engineering have shared their resources and activities in the framework of the European project SERIES, combining their research and jointly developing advanced testing and instrumentation techniques that maximize testing capabilities and increase the value of the tests. This volume presents the first outcomes of the SERIES and its contribution towards Performance-based Earthquake Engineering, i.e., to the most important development in Earthquake Engineering of the past three decades. The concept and the methodologies for performance-based earthquake engineering have now matured. However, they are based mainly on analytical/numerical research; large-scale seismic testing has entered the stage recently. The SERIES Workshop in Ohrid (MK) in Sept. 2010 pooled together the largest European seismic testing facilities, Europe’s best experts in experimental earthquake engineering and select experts from the USA, to present recent research achievements and to address future developments. Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers and advanced practitioners in structural earthquake engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and experimental dynamics, including seismic qualification.

Book Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures

Download or read book Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures written by T. Usami and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-07-23 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near-field earthquake which struck the Hanshin-Awaji area of Japan before dawn on January 17, 1995, in addition to snatching away the lives of more than 6,000 people, inflicted horrendous damage on the region's infrastructure, including the transportation, communication and lifeline supply network and, of course, on buildings, too. A year earlier, the San Fernando Valley area of California had been hit by another near-field quake, the Northridge Earthquake, which dealt a similarly destructive blow to local infrastructures. Following these two disasters, structural engineers and researchers around the world have been working vigorously to develop methods of design for the kind of structure that is capable of withstanding not only the far-field tectonic earthquakes planned for hitherto, but also the full impact of near-field earthquake.Of the observed types of earthquake damage to steel structures, there are some whose causes are well understood, but many others continue to present us with unresolved problems. To overcome these, it is now urgently necessary for specialists to come together and exchange information. The contents of this volume are selected from the Nagoya Colloquium proceedings will become an important part of the world literature on structural stability and ductility, and will prove a driving force in the development of future stability and ductility related research and design.

Book Advances on Testing and Experimentation in Civil Engineering

Download or read book Advances on Testing and Experimentation in Civil Engineering written by Carlos Chastre and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most recent advances on testing and experimentation in civil engineering, especially in the branches of materials, structures, and buildings, complementing the authors’ publication Advances on Testing and Experimentation in Civil Engineering - Geotechnics, Transportation, Hydraulics and Natural Resources. It includes advances in physical modelling, monitoring techniques, data acquisition and analysis, and provides an invaluable contribution to the installation of new civil engineering experimental facilities. The first part of the book covers the latest advances in the testing and experimentation of key domains of materials, such as bio-cementation and self-healing, durability, and recycled materials, as well as the new environmental requirements related to the presence of hazardous substances in construction materials. Furthermore, laboratory and in situ tests, together with equipment needed to estimate the behaviour and durability of construction materials are presented, updating the most important technological advances. The second part of the book highlights the relevance of testing and monitoring in structures, including in situ tests related to static load tests, dynamic tests, and long-term monitoring strategies, as well as laboratory tests of adhesive joints. Experimental tests on shake tables and blast-resistant structures are also described. Recent applications of drone technologies for the inspection and monitoring of civil structures are another important theme developed. Finally, in its third part, the book presents new developments in the characterisation of building testing, with the support of modelling, to assess building pathology and new requirements, acoustic comfort, fire safety, visual comfort, and energy consumption.
