Book Development of Silvicultural Keys to Support Integrated Vegetation Management Decision Making in Forest Renewal

Download or read book Development of Silvicultural Keys to Support Integrated Vegetation Management Decision Making in Forest Renewal written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many forest resource managers have identified a framework and decision support system for the development of consistent silvicultural prescriptions as an important need. Silvicultural prescriptions must be evaluated in terms of specific biological, operational, and financial constraints, but this is difficult given the large number of possible alternatives and external factors. One solution is to adopt an active problem-solving approach to developing a set of silvicultural decision keys to support integrated vegetation management. This report describes the development and use of silvicultural keys for the Brightsand and English River Forests in Ontario. The report examines the specific decision making processes in detail to provide guidance to other resource managers who may wish to develop silvicultural keys for their forests.

Book Ecological Silvicultural Systems

Download or read book Ecological Silvicultural Systems written by Brian J. Palik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ECOLOGICAL SILVICULTURAL SYSTEMS Unleash the natural power and adaptability of forests with this cutting-edge guide For generations, silvicultural systems have focused largely on models whose primary objective is the production of timber, leading to drastically simplified forests with reduced ecological richness, diversity, and complexity. Ecological silviculture, by contrast, focuses on producing and maintaining forests with “all their parts”—, that is, with the diversity and flexibility to respond and adapt to global changes. Ecological silviculture seeks to emulate natural development models and sustain healthy forests serving multiple values and goals. Ecological Silvicultural Systems provides a comprehensive introduction to these approaches and their benefits tailored to diverse types of forests, designed for forest management professionals. It provides a series of exemplary models for ecological silviculture and surveys the resulting forest ecosystems. The result is a text that meets the needs of professionals in forestry and natural resource management with an eye towards sustaining healthy forest ecosystems, adapting them to climate change, protecting them from invasive species, and responding to changing market forces. Ecological Silvicultural Systems readers will also find: Detailed treatment of forest ecosystems in North America, Europe, South America, and Australia A broad field of contributors with decades of combined expertise on multiple continents Discussion of pine woodlands; temperate hardwood forests, boreal forests, temperate rainforests, and more Ecological Silvicultural Systems is a useful reference for professional foresters, wildlife habitat managers, restoration ecologists, and undergraduate and graduate students in any of these fields.

Book Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production

Download or read book Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production written by John Daniel Walstad and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1987 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing the work of an interdisciplinary team of 20 specialists, this text consolidates, for the first time, the information available on forest vegetation management and integrates this practice with other silvicultural considerations. It provides a conceptual framework as well as a database for improving forest vegetation management decisions. In an accurate and complete mannner, it quantifies opportunities for enhancing forest productivity, illustrates the value of vegetation management treatments in protecting forest resources and investments, outlines the concept of economic thresholds, highlights progress in establishing such limits and consolidates the information on treatment efficacy, advantages and disadvantages and tradeoffs involved. Forest managers will find it useful to evaluate silvicultural prescriptions and investment decisions; forest planners and resource specialists can use it as a reference source for preparing environmental impact assessments; and regulatory officials can use it to train and upgrade the skills of professionals.

Book Silviculture

Download or read book Silviculture written by Ralph D. Nyland and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silviculture: Concepts and Applications reflects a belief that all the tools of silviculture have a useful role in modern forestry. Through careful analysis and creative planning, foresters can address a wide array of commodity and nonmarket interests and opportunities while maintaining dynamic and resilient forests. A landowner’s needs, circumstances, and site conditions guide a silviculturist’s judgment and decision making in finding the best ways to integrate the biologic-ecologic, economic-financial, and managerial-administrative requirements at hand. The Third Edition of this influential text provides a foundational basis for rigorous discussion of techniques. The inclusion of numerous real-world examples and balanced coverage of past and current practices broadens the concept of silviculture and the ways that managers can use it to address both traditional and emerging interests in forests. A thorough discussion of new and proven interpretations increasingly directs the attention of foresters toward the role silviculture plays in creating, maintaining, rehabilitating, and restoring forests that can sustain an expanding variety of ecosystem services.

Book Silviculture in the Tropics

Download or read book Silviculture in the Tropics written by Sven Günter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the latest global developments in forestry science and practice and their relevance for the sustainable management of tropical forests. The influence of social dimensions on the development of silvicultural concepts is another spotlight. Ecology and silvicultural options form all tropical continents, and forest formations from dry to moist forests and from lowland to mountain forests are covered. Review chapters which guide readers through this complex subject integrate numerous illustrative and quantitative case studies by experts from all over the world. On the basis of a cross-sectional evaluation of the case studies presented, the authors put forward possible silvicultural contributions towards sustainability in a changing world. The book is addressed to a broad readership from forestry and environmental disciplines.

Book Ecological and Silvicultural Strategies for Sustainable Forest Management

Download or read book Ecological and Silvicultural Strategies for Sustainable Forest Management written by T. Fujimori and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-10-08 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the increased interest in forest management world wide, this book addresses the current knowledge gap by defining sustainable forest management, clarifying methods by which ecological knowledge can be applied and how traditional silvicultural methods can be improved. Sustainable forest management involves the enhancement of various aspects of forest functions such as conservation of biodiversity, conservation of soil and water resources, contribution to the global carbon cycle as well as wood production. To establish ecological and silvicultural theories to enhance these functions harmoniously, recognizing the relationship between stand structures and their functions is essential. This volume presents target stand structures for aimed forest functions in relation to stand development stages, as well as ecological and silvicultural methods to lead and maintain them. Ecological and silvicultural strategies are discussed, both on stand and landscape levels, and from local to international levels in temperate and boreal forest zones.
