Book excerpt: This report documents the research efforts undertaken to design, construct, and test rollover protective structures (ROPS) and to develop ROPS performance criteria for large mobile mining machines. The following tests were conducted: two rollover tests of a 52,000-pound machine, two rollover tests and one static test of a 390,000-pound machine, and one rollover test of a 286,000-pound machine. The tests were conducted on a specially constructed hill with a slope of 35 degrees and were designed to provide consistent and repetitious results. Each roll test was designed to provide a minimum of 540 degrees of machine rotation about the longitudinal axis, allowing the ROPS to impact the slope twice. All tests included extensive instrumentation and photographic coverage to fully evaluate the performance of the ROPS. Using data obtained from the testing, as well as all other available rollover data in which ROPS loading and energy absorption characteristics were known, recommended performance criteria were developed, including side force and energy, longitudinal force, and vertical force.

NOTE - Additional machine types listed in SAE J1116 JUN86 may utilize these ROPS performance criteria if so directed by other SAE reports such as SAE J1042 JUN93. SAE J1194 MAY89 and SAE J2194 JUN93 cover agricultural tractors (defined in SAE J1150 OCT92). EXCLUSIONS - Machines whose use is predominantly, or entirely, in manufacturing plants and/or warehouses are specifically excluded. ROPS and falling object protective structures (FOPS) are required on specified mining machines under regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA). Both ROPS and FOPS are required on mining machines used in surface coal mines and surface areas of underground coal mines (30 CFR 77.403 and 7 7.4 13a), and ROPS are required on mining machines used in metal and nonmetal mining operations (30 CFR 55, 56, and 57.9-88). This illustrated manual provides mine safety personnel, MSHA inspectors, and original-equipment manufacturers with guidelines and a check- list for inspecting ROPS being used in the field. The manual discusses specific requirements of the MSHA regulations and minimum inspection and maintenance checks for ensuring compliance with those regulations. An easily reproducible checklist is provided as an aid to the inspection of ROPS.
