Book Development of a Neutron Radiography and Computed Tomography System at a University Research Reactor

Download or read book Development of a Neutron Radiography and Computed Tomography System at a University Research Reactor written by Derek Anderson Haas and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron radiography is a non-destructive analysis tool that complements X-ray transmission radiography. The use of neutrons provides the ability to image the interior of an object that has a metal core of steel or lead that would shield the interior from X-ray inspection. Neutron tomography is the use of a set of images of a single sample taken at various angles to produce a three dimensional rendition of the sample that greatly increases the effectiveness of neutron radiography as a non-destructive testing tool. A neutron radiography and tomography system has been built at the 1.1 MW TRIGA Mark II nuclear research reactor at The University of Texas at Austin in the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Lab. The Texas Neutron Imaging Facility is located on beam port five of the reactor and is housed in a shielding cave made of concrete to minimize radiation dose to users. The system itself integrates a sample positioning system and neutron sensitive camera through the use of a control code written in National Instruments Labview software. The code was written to increase the efficiency of the imaging process and to provide flexibility in the system. Precise sample positioning and timing of image acquisition provided by the code allows for the collection of data that can be used in computed tomography. The system has produced results in the form of radiographs and 3-D reconstructions of sample objects.

Book Neutron Radiography Handbook

Download or read book Neutron Radiography Handbook written by Peter von der Hardt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiography with neutrons can yield important information not obtainable by more traditional methods. In contrast to X-rays as the major tool of visual non-destructive testing, neutrons can be attenuated by light materials like water, hydrocarbons, boron, penetrate through heavy materials like steel, lead, uranium, distinguish between different isotopes of certain elements, supply high quality radiographs of highly radioactive components. These advantages have led to multiple applications of neutron radiography since 1955, both for non-nuclear and nuclear problems of quality assurance. The required neutron beams originate from radioisotopic sources, accelerator targets, or research reactors. Energy "tailoring" which strongly influences the interaction with certain materials adds to the versatility of the method. Since about 1970 norms and standards have been introduced and reviewed both in Europe (Birmingham, September 1973) and the United States (Gaithersburg, February 1975). The first world conference on neutron radiography will take place in December 1981, in San Diego, U.S.A. . In Europe the interested laboratories inside the European Community have entered into systematic collaboration through the Neutron Radiography Working Group (NRWGl. since May 1979. This Handbook has been compiled as one of the common tasks undertaken by the Group. Its principal authors are J.C. Domanus (Ris0 National Laboratory). and R.S. Matfield (Joint Research Centre, Ispra) Major contributions have been received from R. Liesenborgs (SCK/CEN Mol) R. Barbalat (CEN Saclayl.

Book Real time Neutron Radiography

Download or read book Real time Neutron Radiography written by Daniel L. Newell and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real-time neutron radiography system has been developed at Oregon State University which is capable of producing neutron radiographs of objects and events concurrent with the incident radiation. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the feasibility of the real-time technique as a further application of neutron radiography at OSU. The system has been used to demonstrate the application of real-time techniques to neutron radiography as a method of non-destructive testing. Results of this study showed that the system could produce images of static objects such as ammunition cartridges, and record the motion of the gas phase in two-phase systems. General requirements for a real-time neutron radiography system are discussed, leading to the decisions made in choosing the components for the OSU Real-Time System. Emphasis is placed on the illuminance from the light-producing elements of the system; a method of estimating this illuminance is presented. Procedures for evaluating the performance of the system are also explored. The real-time system has undergone several alterations. Initially designed as a modification to the high-speed motion neutron radiography system, the real-time system uses a television camera to produce radiographic images. The best radiographs were produced using a reactor power level of 350 kilowatts and aligning the equipment so that the object or event maximized the viewing area of the television camera. Results also indicate a reactor power of one megawatt would help improve the resolution of the system.

Book Neutron Beam Design Development and Performance for Neutron Capture Therapy

Download or read book Neutron Beam Design Development and Performance for Neutron Capture Therapy written by Otto K. Harling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this Workshop, the organizers have attempted to invite experts from all known centers which are engaged in neutron beam development for neutron capture therapy. The Workshop was designed around a series of nineteen invited papers which dealt with neutron source design and development and beam characterization and performance. Emphasis was placed on epithermal beams because they offer clinical advantages and are more challenging to implement than thermal beams. Fission reactor sources were the basis for the majority of the papers; however three papers dealt with accelerator neutron sources. An additional three invited papers provided a summary of clinical results of Ncr therapy in Japan between 1968 and 1989 and overviews of clinical considerations for neutron capture therapy and of the status of tumor targeting chemical agents for Ncr. Five contributed poster papers dealing with NCT beam design and performance were also presented. A rapporteurs' paper was prepared after the Workshop to attempt to summarize the major aspects, issues, and conclusions which resulted from this Workshop. Many people contributed to both the smooth functioning of the Workshop and to the preparation of these proceedings. Special thanks are reserved for Ms. Dorothy K.

Book Practical Neutron Radiography

Download or read book Practical Neutron Radiography written by J.C. Domanus and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TIlls book is the result of an effort made by several members of the Euratom Neutron Radiography Working Group (NRWG) to produce a new, revised and enlarged edition of the Neutron Radiography Handbooldlj (NRH), written by members of the NRWG and published in 1981, just before the First World Conference on Neutron Radiography (WCNR) (1981). Members of the NRWG have contributed with many papers both to the first (1981)[2), as well as the second (1986)[3) and third (1989) [4) World Conference on Neutron Radiography (WCNR). They were also among the editors of the proceedings of those conferences (1982, 1987, 1990). The NRWG was constituted mainly for the purpose of promoting neutron radiography (NR) in the field of nuclear reactor fuel. Therefore the next topical publication of the NRWG were Reference Neutron Radiographs of Nuclear Reactor Fuel (1984)[5). The book on Collimators for y Thermal Neutron Radiograph 6/ written in 1987 by a member of the NRWG was another publication in the same series of books on NR. To the same series belongs the present book on Practical Neutron Radiography (PNR). It will be followed soon by another book written by the members of the NRWG: Neutron Radiography on Nitrocellulose Filmf71. The NRWG concentrated its interest in the past years on the problem of dimensional measurements from neutron radiographs. The results of the investigation of this problem were summarized in a special EUR report about the Neutron Radiography Working Group Test Program[8/ published in 1989.
