Book excerpt: Le centre de production de faisceaux d'isotopes rares situé sur le site de TRIUMF, utilise la méthode de séparation isotopique en ligne (ISAC) pour produire des faisceaux exotiques, c'est-à-dire des faisceaux d'ion hors de la vallée de stabilité. Pour ce faire, ils utilisent un faisceau de protons, provenant du cyclotron principal, d'intensité allant jusqu'à 100 uA et d'une énergie de 500 MeV. Présentement, les faisceaux sont produits soit à l'aide d'une source d'ionisation à surface chaude, d'une source d'ionisation résonante par laser ou d'une FEBIAD (Forced Electron Beam Induced Arc Discharged). Malheureusement, ces sources d'ionisation ne sont pas adéquates pour les éléments gazeux. Un nouveau type de source est donc nécessaire. La source ECR (Electron Cyclotron Resonance) peut produire des électrons de haute énergie en superposant une onde électromagnétique haute fréquence à un confinement par champ magnétique. Ces électrons d'haute énergie sont essentiels pour l'ionisation d'éléments gazeux. Les ions sont créés à l'intérieur du plasma lorsque les électrons entre en collision avec les atomes neutres. L'absence d'une cathode chaude près de la cavité d'ionisation, permet à la source ECR de produire un faisceau intense d'éléments de forte électronégativité, tel que l'azote, l'oxygène, le fluor, le soufre, etc. Dans ISAC, le taux élevé de radiation due à la proximité de la cible prévient l'utilisation d'une source ECR conventionnelle. À cette fin, MISTIC (Monocharged Ion Source for TRIUMF and ISAC Complex), une source ECR prototype, a été construit à TRIUMF utilisant un concept similaire d'une source conçue au GANIL. Afin d'obtenir une source résistante aux radiations, des électro-aimants sont préférés à l'utilisation d'aimants permanents pour la production du champ de confinement magnétique. Les tests sur la source sont effectués sur un banc d'essai pourvu des instruments nécessaires à l'évaluation des ses performances. Les tests consistent en des mesures d'efficacité d'ionisation et d'émittance pour différentes configurations des paramètres de la source, tel que la force du champ magnétique, la fréquence des micro-ondes et leur puissance et la composition et la densité du plasma. Une sonde de Langmuir fut aussi utilisée afin de mesurer certains paramètres du plasma. Les résultats des expérimentations sur le prototype vont aider à définir les paramètres de la version en ligne de MISTIC. De plus, un travail extensif a été accompli sur une autre source plasma retrouvée à TRIUMF, la FEBIAD, afin d'améliorer ses performances et sa durabilité. Les résultats des mesures d'efficacité effectuées hors ligne vont servir à comparer les performances entre les deux sources.

The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, a mass separator, and beam transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix to the surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities. For many years the uranium enrichment industry was dominated by a single method, gaseous diffusion, which was technically complex, extremely capital-intensive, and highly inefficient in its use of energy. As long as this remained true, only the richest and most technically advanced nations could afford to pursue the enrichment route to weapon acquisition. But during the 1970s this situation changed dramatically. Several new and far more accessible enrichment techniques were developed, stimulated largely by the anticipation of a rapidly growing demand for enrichment services by the world-wide nuclear power industry. This proliferation of new techniques, coupled with the subsequent contraction of the commercial market for enriched uranium, has created a situation in which uranium enrichment technology might well become the most important contributor to further nuclear weapon proliferation.
