Book excerpt: ATLAS is one of the two main experiments at LHC with the purpose of investigating the microscopic properties of matter to address the most fundamental questions of particle physics. After the achievements of the first years of running, the potential reach for new discoveries and precise measurements at LHC is being extended by pushing further the energy and luminosity frontiers through three upgrades of the accelerator culminating in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To fully profit from the increased luminosity, two main upgrades of the ATLAS inner detector are planned. The first upgrade was already completed at the beginning of 2015 with the insertion of the IBL, a fourth pixel layer located at just 3.2 cm from the beam line. In the second major upgrade, foreseen for 2024, the full inner detector will be replaced by a completely new inner tracker fully made of silicon devices to cope with the high particle density and the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, which during its operational period will deliver 3000 fb-1, almost ten times the integrated luminosity of the full LHC program. This thesis addresses the study of new n+-in-p active edge pixel detectors by developing two novel doping profile analysis methods to study the radiation damage effects on the pixel detectors performance. These methods are the 3D sims imaging method and the TLM Method. TCAD simulation has been used to simulate the doping profiles, the electrical behavior and the radiation damage. Validating the simulation models with data have been done. Moreover, clean-room characterization, as well as testbeam measurement have been performed to test the different detector designs. In the second part of the thesis, I discuss the observation of the standard model Higgs boson bb decay mode using the data collected by ATLAS during the LHC Run2 at center-of-mass energy 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity 79.8 fb−1 of a proton-proton collision. I contributed specifically to the search of the standard model Higgs boson in VH(bb) production mode. In the VH(bb) analysis we don't have any channel that considers the tau leptons in the final state. I have performed a feasibility study to verify the gain of using the taus in the analysis. In addition, for the VH(bb) analysis I have worked on the multi-jet background estimation in the 1-lepton channel using the dijet-mass analysis method.

Book excerpt: By 2027, the LHC will enter its high luminosity regime, providing protons protons collisions at an unprecedented rate. The LHC experiments whill have to be upgraded to cope with this higher data rate. The new ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) will allow a better identification of b-quarks and interesting physics signature with b-quarks in the final states such as the Higgs trilinear coupling will be reachable. The work performed during this thesis consisted in testing planar pixel sensors for the ITk, as well as optimizing b-tagging algorithms. In parallel, a study on the radiation damage on silicon pixel sensors have been performed. The radiation hardness of silicon sensors plays a determinant role as it allows them to be efficient in the highly radiative environment at LHC. Understanding the impact of radiation in silicon sensors is a major challenge and a radiation damage digitizer which models radiation damage effects in ATLAS Monte Carlo simulations is currently developed by the ATLAS experiment. Three ITk silicon planar pixel sensors productions of LPNHE and FBK have been developed, produced and tested on beam. Sensors from these three productions aim to be part of the ITk and have to demonstrate good performance after being irradiated at high fluences. Several technological designs have been investigated, such as temporary metal biasing option and active edges which maximize the geometrical acceptance of the sensors. The optimization of b-tagging SV1 algorithm (a secondary-vertex based algorithm) will be pre- sented as well as a study on the extrapolation of b-tagging performances at high pT.

Book excerpt: Abstract: For the High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider an increased instantaneous luminosity of up to 7.5 ⋅ 1034 cm−2 s−1, leading to a total integrated luminosity of up to 3000 fb−1, is foreseen. The current silicon and transition radiation tracking detectors of the ATLAS experiment will be unable to cope with the increased track densities and radiation levels, and will need to be replaced. The new tracking detector will consist entirely of silicon pixel and strip detectors. In this paper, results on the development and tests of prototype components for the new silicon strip detector in the forward regions (end-caps) of the ATLAS detector are presented. Flex-printed readout boards with fast readout chips, referred to as hybrids, and silicon detector modules are investigated. The modules consist of a hybrid glued onto a silicon strip sensor. The channels on both are connected via wire-bonds for readout and powering. Measurements of important performance parameters and a comparison of two possible readout schemes are presented. In addition, the assembly procedure is described and recommendations for further prototyping are derived

Book excerpt: In high energy physics experiments, very high precision tracking of charged particles is needed. Solid state detectors achieve the high precision necessary to provide track and vertex reconstruction of the particles that traverse them, but tracking performance begins to deteriorate at fluxes of radiation around 1014 - 1015 hadrons/cm 2. These radiation levels are congruent with those experienced by the ATLAS pixel detector, the inner most part of the ATLAS tracking system, which is vital to track and vertex reconstruction. During the planned shut-down of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2013-2014, the energy and luminosity of the LHC will both be increased. The current pixel detector has begun to suffer deterioration of performance, so the ATLAS Collaboration has initiated an upgrade to take place during the scheduled shut-down beginning in 2013, the Insertable B-Layer (IBL). The IBL will be assembled and placed in between a reduced diameter beam pipe and the current pixel detector, acting as the fourth layer of the ATLAS inner detector. The pixel sensors of the IBL will have to sustain a radiation dose of 5 * 1015neq/cm2. Two sensor technologies are being considered for the IBL upgrade: planar n-in-p silicon pixel sensors and 3D double sided n-in-p pixel sensors. Research of both these technologies is being done by the IFAE in collaboration with CNM-Barcelona. To cope with the increased data rate after the LHC upgrade, a new front-end chip has also been produced, the FE-14 front-end chip. Test results and data analysis from five different 3D pixel sensor devices, all fabricated at CNM-Barcelona were done. Evaluation of these technologies and the test results of irradiated 3D pixel sensor devices are carried out in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is an apparatus of unprecedented complexity, designed to probe physics in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 14 TeV. It was installed in its underground cavern at the LHC during the period 2004 to 2008. Testing of individual subsystems began immediately with calibration systems and cosmic rays, and by 2008 full detector systems could be operated with the planned infrastructure, readout, and monitoring systems. Several commissioning runs of the full detector were organized in 2008 and 2009. During these runs the detector was operated continuously for several months with its readout triggered by cosmic ray muons. At the same time, regular calibrations of individual detector systems were made. In the course of these runs, signals from tens of millions of cosmic ray events were recorded. These commissioning runs continued until the first beam-beam collisions in late 2009. This volume is a collection of seven performance papers based on data collected during this commissioning period. Five papers deal with the response of individual detector systems. One paper describes the performance of the simulation infrastructure used to model the detector’s response to both cosmic rays and to the later beam-beam collisions. The final paper describes measurements drawing on the integrated performance of several detector systems. It studies lepton identification, the response to low energy electrons, muon energy loss in the calorimeters, missing ET effects, and the combined performance for muons when both the muon spectrometer and the inner tracking detector are used. These papers summarize the studies of the ATLAS detector performance and readiness prior to the start of colliding beam data. They are reprinted from The European Physical Journal C where they were published between summer 2010 and spring 2011.
