Download or read book The New International Division of Labour written by Guido Starosta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the debate over the new international division of labour (NIDL) that dominated discussions in international political economy and development studies until the early 1990s. It submits that a revised NIDL thesis can shed light on the specificities of capitalist development in various parts of the world today. Taken together, the contributions amount to a novel value-theoretical approach to understanding the NIDL. This rests upon the distinction between the global economic content that determines the constitution and dynamics of the NIDL and the evolving national political forms that mediate its development. More specifically, the authors argue that uneven development is an expression of the underlying essential unity of the production of relative surplus-value on a world scale. They substantiate and illustrate this argument through several international case studies, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Ireland, South Korea, Spain and Venezuela.

Download or read book Science Technology and Development written by Mozammel Huq and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This volume, containing the proceedings of a Conference organised by the Science, Technology and Development (STD) Forum in association with the Developing Countries Research Unit (DCRU), University of Strathclyde, on 9-10 April 1990, is a modest attempt at advancing awareness concerning Third World development mainly in two inter-related areas: (a) the problems faced in the advancement of science and technology in the Third World and (b) the use of scientific and technological knowledge for promoting sustainable development of these countries. Given the multi-disciplinary character of the Conference and, in particular, the variety of approaches adopted by the contributors, any attempt to synthesise the papers in a brief introduction is likely to be futile. The best that can be done is to introduce some of the papers in a brief review. But before that a few words on the objectives of the Conference, and in particular on the need for North-South Cooperation in science, technology and development, may be helpful.

Download or read book Japan and the Global Automotive Industry written by Koichi Shimokawa and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese automotive industry enjoyed spectacular success in the 1980s. This was largely due to the so-called 'Lean Production System' - the combination of an efficient production system, an effective supplier system, and a product development system. In the 1990s the industry fell on hard times because of the Japanese asset price bubble and extreme currency appreciation. In this book, eminent industry specialist Koichi Shimokawa draws on his thirty years of research and fieldwork with Japanese and American firms, to show how the Japanese automotive industry has managed to recover from this difficult period. He shows how firms like Toyota were able to transfer Japanese systems to overseas plants and how they have changed in order to compete in increasingly globalized markets. In addition, the book also addresses the two major challenges to the current industry model: the rise of China and the environmental and energy supply situation.

Download or read book Diversity and Transformations of Asian Capitalisms written by Robert Boyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among a vast literature on the Asian economies, the book proposes a distinctive approach, inspired by Régulation Theory, in order to understand the current transformations of the Asian economies. The book follows their transformations after the 1997 Asian crisis until the subprime crisis. During this period, the viability of their growth regime was to coherence of five basic institutional forms: the degree of competition and insertion into the world economy, the nature of labour market organization, the monetary and exchange rate regimes and finally the style for State intervention via legislation, public spending and tax. The book provides new findings. The degree of financial liberalization and opening to the world economy largely determines the severity of the 2008-2009 recession and the political-economic reactions of each Asian countries to the subprime crisis. Asian capitalisms are distinct from American and European ones, but they are quite diverse among themselves, and this differentiation has been widening during the last decade. This book will help to shed light on a de facto regional economic integration is taking place in Asia, but unsolved past political conflicts do hinder the institutionalisation of these interdependencies.
Download or read book Convergence Innovation in Asian Industries written by Kong-Rae Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with both the understanding of, and the explanation of, knowledge about the causes, processes, and patterns of convergence innovation. It argues that the process of convergence innovation is a continuous disequilibrium between reference technology and its matching technology, adjusting the optimal balance between the functions of the two technologies. Contributors describe how convergence innovation is a learning process that requires both vertical and horizontal convergence, and case studies explore the different types of convergence innovation such as outside-in and inside-out. Convergence innovation has been taking place mainly by applying IT technologies to vast areas of conventional technologies, so that individuals or firms reap the benefits of the convergence between IT and conventional technologies. Such innovations are made possible by convergence, and they ultimately improve the welfare of human beings as companies solve diverse problems and increase employment. Examples in this book include biochemical companies in Indonesia, who were able to increase their market shares in bio-fertilizer and bio-pesticide products through bio-based technological convergence; and textile machinery firms in South Korea who have been survived by achieving convergence innovation on their core competences. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asian Journal of Technology Innovation.
Download or read book The Internationalization of Japan written by Glenn D. Hook and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and comprehensive study provides the English-speaking reader with the opportunity to hear what some of Japan's leading social scientists and other commentators have to say about the internationalization of their country and its impact overseas. As the global community's demands on Japan call for a greater Japanese contribution to international society and for changes in Japan to facilitate foreign access, the topic of internationalization takes on even greater significance. The contributors examine internationalization from a variety of perspectives, and place it into its political, economic and social contexts. Topics of special interest include the internationalization of Japanese capital, the response of Japanese society to foreign workers, local level initiatives, and the internationalization of education. In addition to the group of highly regarded Japanese scholars who have contributed to this volume, two leading political scientists from the United States and Britain discuss the experience of Japan as it compares to their countries of origin. The Internationalisationof Japanwill appeal to students and scholars of Japanese affairs, and to political scientists and specialists in international affairs who are interested in the rise and fall of great powers.
