Book Development of Input Data Layers for the FARSITE Fire Growth Model for the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Complex USA

Download or read book Development of Input Data Layers for the FARSITE Fire Growth Model for the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Complex USA written by Robert E. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel and vegetation spatial data layers required by the spatially explicit fire growth model FARSITE were developed for all langs in and around the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area in Idaho and Montana. Satellite imagery and terrain modeling were used to create the three base vegetation spatial data layers of potential vegetation, cover type, and structural stage. Fire behavior fuel models and crown characteristics were assigned to combinations of base layer categories on these maps by local fire managers, ecologists, and existing data. FARSITE fuels maps are used to simulate growth of prescribed natural fires in the wilderness area, aiding managers in the planning and allocation of resources. An extensive accuracy assessment of all maps indicated fuels layers are about 60 percent accurate. This methodology was designed to be replicated for other areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports on the structure of a fire growth simulation model, FARSITE, and its performance under simplified test conditions. FARSITE incorporates existing models of surface fire, crown fire, point-source fire acceleration, spotting, and fuel moisture. This documentation of how the simulation was constructed, and how the individual fire behavior models perform, will be useful to researchers and managers who use FARSITE or are interested in fire growth simulation. The models were integrated using a vector propagation technique for fire perimeter expansion that controls for both space and time resolution of fire growth over the landscape. The model produces vector fire perimeters (polygons) at specified time intervals. The vertices of these polygons contain information on the fire's spread rate and intensity, which are interpolated to produce raster maps of fire behavior. Because fire behavior at each vertex is assumed independent of the others, the simulation outputs illustrate the strict spatial consequences to fire behavior of incorporating the models into a two-dimensional simulation. Simplified test conditions show that surface fire growth and intensity conform to idealized patterns. Similarities also exist between simulated crown fires and observed patterns of extreme wind-driven fires. Complex patterns of fire growth and behavior result from the spatial and temporal dependencies in the model. The limitations and assumptions of this approach are discussed.

Book Modeling Moisture Content of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels

Download or read book Modeling Moisture Content of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels written by Richard C. Rothermel and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a model for predicting moisture content of fine fuels for use with the BEHAVE fire behavior and fuel modeling system. The model is intended to meet the need for more accurate predictions of fine fuel moisture, particularly in northern conifer stands and on days following rain. The model is based on the Canadian Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), modified to account for solar heating of fuels and to predict diurnal trends in fine fuel moisture. The model may be initiated without extensive data on prior weather. When compared to the FFMC and the fire behavior officers' procedures, the new model gave consistently better predictions over the complete range of fuel conditions.

Book Gradient Modelling

Download or read book Gradient Modelling written by S. R. Kessell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series is dedicated to serving the growing community of scholars and practitioners concerned with the principles and applications of environmen tal management. Each volume will be a thorough treatment of a specific topic of importance for proper management practices. A fundamental objective ofthese books is to help the reader discern and implement man's stewardship of our environment and the world's renewable resources. For we must strive to understand the relationship between man and nature, act to bring harmony to it and nurture an environment that is both stable and productive. These objectives have often eluded us because the pursuit of other indi vidual and societal goals has diverted us from a course of living in balance with the environment. At times, therefore, the environmental manager may have to exert restrictive control, which is usually best applied to man, not nature. Attempts to alter or harness nature have often failed or backfired, as exemplified by the results of imprudent use of herbicides, fertilizers, water and other agents. Each book in this series will shed light on the fundamental and applied aspects of environmental management. It is hoped that each will help solve a practical and serious environmental problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart kids with autism spectrum disorders need specific interventions to find success in school and beyond. Featuring a foreword by Temple Grandin, School Success for Kids With High-Functioning Autism shares practical advice for implementing strategies proven to be effective in school for dealing with the“Big 10” obstacles, including social interactions, inflexibility, behavior issues, attention and organization, homework, and more. Based on the new criteria in the DSM-5, School Success for Kids With High-Functioning Autism also describes how autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social communication disorders (SCD) will now identify the students formerly identified as having Asperger's syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, high-functioning autism, or PDD-NOS. Relying on the latest research, and presenting it in easy-to-understand and practical language, the authors identify how the key components of ASD and SCD will appear to parents and professionals and what steps should be taken once these signs are evident. This book is sure to help any parent or teacher wanting to see their smart kids with autism succeed!
