Download or read book Development of Information Sciences in Croati written by Ilda Pe Ari and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research subject is the development of information science in Croatia. Bibliometric analysis was done on the corpus of 170 PhD theses done at Croatian universities. The results of the research are presented in two parts: I Bibliometric analysis of the PhD theses in information sciences from 1978-2009, II Methodology of research and/or the research of methodology. The first part examines the development of information sciences studies; the scope of analyzed corpus; quantitative overview of the data; the analysis of citations, co-citations, and co-words. The second part deals with the study of methodology and the discussion about the difference between impact and influence factor; scientific communication and cognitive patterns are analyzed; usefulness and value of bibliometric methods are analyzed by comparison of the author's citation, co-citation and co-words findings on the same corpus of data; terms cohesion and coherence are advocated as the measure of scientific cooperation and communication. The use of bibliometric methods for the identification of four different types of networks is proposed: social, institutional, communicational and cognitive networks.

Book The Notion of Relevance in Information Science

Download or read book The Notion of Relevance in Information Science written by Tefko Saracevic and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody knows what relevance is. It is a "ya'know" notion, concept, idea–no need to explain whatsoever. Searching for relevant information using information technology (IT) became a ubiquitous activity in contemporary information society. Relevant information means information that pertains to the matter or problem at hand—it is directly connected with effective communication. The purpose of this book is to trace the evolution and with it the history of thinking and research on relevance in information science and related fields from the human point of view. The objective is to synthesize what we have learned about relevance in several decades of investigation about the notion in information science. This book deals with how people deal with relevance—it does not cover how systems deal with relevance; it does not deal with algorithms. Spurred by advances in information retrieval (IR) and information systems of various kinds in handling of relevance, a number of basic questions are raised: But what is relevance to start with? What are some of its properties and manifestations? How do people treat relevance? What affects relevance assessments? What are the effects of inconsistent human relevance judgments on tests of relative performance of different IR algorithms or approaches? These general questions are discussed in detail.

Book Open Access to Scientific Information in Croatia

Download or read book Open Access to Scientific Information in Croatia written by Ivana Hebrang Grgic and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Open Access may increase both the visibility and impact of research results of a peripheral scientific community. This is the key message of the study of Open Access in Croatia. Croatia is a transition country on a small R&D budget, with low visibility of local journals and with high price barriers to the mainstream scientific information. Using the examples of Hr ak, the Croatian portal of scientific journals, and several repositories, the study illustrates the process of raising awareness and support for Open Access in the Croatian scientific community, among governmental bodies, publishers, scientists, libraries." (Jelka Petrak, PhD) "During the last decade, Open Access has become an important means of communication in science. The author discusses scientific communication, its history and development... and describes two ways of achieving OA. The most valuable part of this book is the study of OA in Croatia, which is the first exhaustive examination of the kind. The author concludes with constructive recommendations for further OA promotion in Croatia, involving publishers, libraries and governmental bodies..." (Ana Barbari , PhD)
