Book Development of Fatigue Loading Spectra for Testing Aircraft Components and Structures

Download or read book Development of Fatigue Loading Spectra for Testing Aircraft Components and Structures written by A. J. McCulloch and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of frequency-of-occurrence distributions or spectra of loadings for an aircraft structure requires the use of all available information on the aircraft's service and on the loadings peculiar to this service. Interest in these loadings is not new, but there is a growing appreciation of the need for detailed information on the load and stress histories that they produce. The need for such information has led to the collection of quantities of service loading data covering a wide range of operational conditions. However, use of the data has generally been restricted to assessments of the adequacy of design load levels and to analytical evaluations of the effects of service loadings on the life of the structure. The direct use of the data in test evaluations of structures is a fairly recent and rather controversial development. The need for this development will be brought out in a brief review of fatigue testing. This review will be followed by a brief discussion of the operational conditions to be considered in the construction of loading spectra. Selection of the most appropriate operational conditions is the first and a very important step in any fatigue evaluation. Inadequate selections can have a major effect on the interpretation of fatigue test results. The generally available data on particular classes of service loadings will then be described in some detail. This description will attempt, by supplying background data, to throw some light on the bases for generalized representations of service loading histories and so provide an indication of their utility. Finally, the use of defined operational conditions and of standardized loading spectra in the construction of test spectra to represent particular aircraft utilizations will be described and illustrated.

Book The Development of Fatigue crack Growth Analysis Loading Spectra

Download or read book The Development of Fatigue crack Growth Analysis Loading Spectra written by J. E. Holpp and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A realistic loading spectrum is a necessity in order to predict the fatigue or crack growth life of a component. Realistic loading spectra encompass many disciplines, including loads, stress, fatigue and crack growth analysis, and the realism of the spectrum will be dependent on the accuracy of the input data and the degree of complexity that the analyst is able or willing to undertake. External factors such as time and money considerations, available data, degree of accuracy required, etc., also affect the process of spectrum development and these factors often force the use of simpler, less time consuming, less expensive techniques than those desired to produce adequately realistic results. Steps in developing a loading spectrum which are covered in this report include: mission profile definition; loading environment; loading conditions; structural loads analysis; stress analysis; and stress sequencing. The simpler techniques available are discussed whenever appropriate. A detailed example of a spectrum development on a fighter/strike aircraft is included.

Book Fatigue Spectra Development for Airborne Stores

Download or read book Fatigue Spectra Development for Airborne Stores written by HO. Fuchs and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, airborne store design has been based on service life criteria similar to those used for aircraft development. Recent research has shown that an airborne store may be exposed to a unique loading environment and may therefore require a different approach. Moreover, flight loads data for aircraft and airborne stores are normally difficult and expensive to obtain, because resources are not available to fly a sufficient variety of combinations of aircraft, stores, and mission types. Finally, the increased life of many stores has made fatigue life an important consideration in design. These considerations led to development of an approach to building flight-load spectra for fatigue testing of externally mounted airborne stores (that is, fuel tanks, missiles, bombs, etc.) using time-history load data collected from U.S. Air Force and Navy training flights. The data are processed using a "racetrack" type data compaction algorithm to yield sequential peak/valley pair files, and then reorganized to build new mission profiles. Finally, the new mission profiles are weighted by expected frequency of occurrence and organized to reflect the expected service use over a period of time.

Book Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering written by J.J. Xiong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering is an attempt to present an integrated and unified approach to reliability determination of fatigue and fracture behaviour, incorporating probability, statistics and other related areas. A series of original and practical approaches, are suggested in Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering, including new techniques in determining fatigue and fracture performances. It also carries out an investigation into static and fatigue properties, and into the failure mechanisms of unnotched and notched CFR composite laminates with different lay-ups to optimize the stacking sequence effect. Further benefits include: a novel convergence-divergence counting procedure to extract all load cycles from a load history of divergence-convergence waves; practical scatter factor formulae to determine the safe fatigue crack initiation and propagation lives from the results of a single full-scale test of a complete structure; and a nonlinear differential kinetic model for describing the dynamical behaviour of an atom at a fatigue crack tip. Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering is intended for practising engineers in marine, civil construction, aerospace, offshore, automotive and chemical industries. It is also useful reading for researchers on doctoral programmes, and is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in any mechanically-oriented engineering discipline.

Book Development of a Fatigue Lifetime Load Spectrum for a Large Scale Aluminum Ship Model

Download or read book Development of a Fatigue Lifetime Load Spectrum for a Large Scale Aluminum Ship Model written by JE. Beach and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue load spectrum to be applied to the 30-m aluminum ship-evaluation model (ASEM) is presented. The ASEM will be tested in the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Carderock, Maryland. Spectra developed for design, analysis, and test purposes are given, based on a reference lifetime-load spectrum developed for a 90-m aluminum ship. Selected ship trial results that provide the basis for developing the lifetime-load spectrum for the 90-m ship are also presented. Results of sensitivity studies of fatigue crack growth indicate that a repeatable 1/100-year block spectrum, sequenced in a low-to-high-to-low order is a practicable compromise for fatigue testing ASEM.

Book Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book Load and Environment Interactions in Fatigue Crack Growth Under Spectrum Loading

Download or read book Load and Environment Interactions in Fatigue Crack Growth Under Spectrum Loading written by R. P. Wei and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of delay (or, retardation in the rate of fatigue crack growth) produced by load interactions in variable-amplitude loading on the accurate prediction of fatigue lives of aircraft and other engineering structures has been recognized for some time and has begun to receive greater attention in recent years. Recent investigations showed that the effects of delay can be quite large, and that these effects need to be taken into account in developing improved fatigue analysis procedures for aircraft and other engineering structures. A number of models (based on the concepts of crack closure, residual stress intensity factor, etc.) have been proposed to account for the effects of delay. These models, while successfully predicting trends in the rate of fatigue crack growth for randomized load spectra, appear to break down for ordered spectra. Several basic problems contributed to the lack of complete success, and needs to be resolved in the development of improved models for predicting load interaction effects (chiefly delay) on fatigue crack growth.
