This superior performance of the reactor is due to the formation of self-immobilized granular sludge of high density from mixed microbial population during startup of the process. The complex interplay of liquid influent with solid granular sludge and, thereby, biogas formation in the reactor is necessary to be understood for effective startup of reactor. We propose an axial dispersion model, which is based on RTD experiments performed at different loading rates using LiCl as tracer. The model, which accurately describes the liquid mixing pattern during and after startup, comprises of two zones with a bypassing stream from the first zone to the second zone without back mixing. Each zone is considered axially dispersed and has some dead space to account for stagnant fluid. [Authors' abstract].

Book excerpt: Understanding the processes governing axial dispersion of contaminants in a flowing system is one of the unsolved classical problems in fluid mechanics. Taylor (1953; 1954) provided a robust methodology to model such systems in their ideal laminar and turbulent flow conditions. The current study reveals that both laminar and turbulent conditions need to be considered simultaneously in order to accurately model axial dispersion in real systems. The analyses presented in this work provide a physical backing to Taylor's theory, while providing new conceptual visualizations of the processes governing axial dispersion. Theoretical and phenomenological analyses are carried out to show that the viscous sublayer has a significant role in axial dispersion under turbulent flow conditions. A robust phenomenological model has been developed for estimating the axial dispersion coefficient for flow of liquids through straight pipes. The proposed model employs the viscous sublayer thickness as a parameter to combine the convective-diffusion equation with the boundary layer theory. The mathematical formulations developed using Reynolds analogy, in concurrence with the characteristic turbulent bursting events observed in the near-wall regions of the flow, have been shown to be applicable even for non-ideal low Reynolds number turbulent flow conditions. This hints at the possibility of a universal theory governing all mass, momentum, and heat transport processes. Furthermore, theoretical and empirical concepts used in pressure drop estimations for flow through straight and bent pipes have been demonstrated to be applicable to axial dispersion estimations. The axial dispersion models proposed in the current study have been validated using laboratory, pilot, and field experimental data. The proposed concepts could be used in identifying novel techniques to help reduce interfacial contamination in petroleum pipelines and other similarly affected processes. This work is also expected to lead to improved models and theories that broaden our understanding of the axial dispersion process.

Book excerpt: Liquid solids circulating fluidized beds have great potential to be utilized in many chemical processes for their tremendous advantages. There are many studies about the riser but there is not any information on the downer as yet. This research is devoted to study the axial solids mixing in the downer. A new methodology was developed based on the concept of ion-exchanging ability of resins and the residence time distribution measurement. Resin particles were loaded with calcium ion as the tracer and Peclet number and the axial dispersion coefficient were determined for each set of operating conditions. Different designs of baffles were implemented in order to examine their effects on the axial solids dispersion. The results show that the baffles reduce the mixing substantially and their suppression effects increase with liquid velocity, except at very low liquid velocity where the presence of the baffle increases the mixing. Among the three designs - louver, mesh, and vertical plane, the louver has the most influence as it reduces the mixing coefficient by 60% when Ul = 3.86Umf. Under the same conditions, the mesh and vertical plane reduce the mixing coefficient by 46% and 32% respectively.

In that context, waste and wastewater treatment, and more specifically biological wastewater treatment processes play an important role. In this book, we concentrate on the mathematical modelling of these processes. The main purpose is to provide the increasing number of professionals who are using models to design, optimise and control wastewater treatment processes with the necessary background for their activities of model building, selection and calibration. The book deals specifically with dynamic models because they allow us to describe the behaviour of treatment plants under the highly dynamic conditions that we want them to operate (e.g. Sequencing Batch Reactors) or we have to operate them (e.g. storm conditions, spills). Further extension is provided to new reactor systems for which partial differential equation descriptions are necessary to account for their distributed parameter nature (e.g. settlers, fixed bed reactors). The model building exercise is introduced as a step-wise activity that, in this book, starts from mass balancing principles. In many cases, different hypotheses and their corresponding models can be proposed for a particular process. It is therefore essential to be able to select from these candidate models in an objective manner. To this end, structure characterisation methods are introduced. Book excerpt: The IWA Task Group for Mathematical Modelling of Anaerobic Digestion Processes was created with the aim to produce a generic model and common platform for dynamic simulations of a variety of anaerobic processes. This book presents the outcome of this undertaking and is the result of four years collaborative work by a number of international experts from various fields of anaerobic process technology. The purpose of this approach is to provide a unified basis for anaerobic digestion modelling. It is hoped this will promote increased application of modelling and simulation as a tool for research, design, operation and optimisation of anaerobic processes worldwide. This model was developed on the basis of the extensive but often disparate work in modelling and simulation of anaerobic digestion systems over the last twenty years. In developing ADM1, the Task Group have tried to establish common nomenclature, units and model structure, consistent with existing anaerobic modelling literature and the popular activated sludge models (See Activated Sludge Models ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d and ASM3, IWA Publishing, 2000, ISBN: 1900222248). As such, it is intended to promote widespread application of simulation from domestic (wastewater and sludge) treatment systems to specialised industrial applications. Outputs from the model include common process variables such gas flow and composition, pH, separate organic acids, and ammonium. The structure has been devised to encourage specific extensions or modifications where required, but still maintain a common platform. During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages. ADM1 will be a valuable information source for practising engineers working in water treatment (both domestic and industrial) as well as academic researchers and students in Environmental Engineering and Science, Civil and Sanitary Engineering, Biotechnology, and Chemical and Process Engineering departments.
