Book Development of an XUV IR Free electron Laser User Facility for Scientific Research and Industrial Applications

Download or read book Development of an XUV IR Free electron Laser User Facility for Scientific Research and Industrial Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Alamos has designed and proposes to establish an XUV-IR free- electron laser (FEL) user facility for scientific research and industrial applications based on coherent radiation ranging from soft x-rays as short as 1 nm to far-infrared wavelengths as long as 100 [mu]m. As the next-generation light source beyond low-emittance storage rings with undulator insertion devices, this proposed national FEL user facility should make available to researchers broadly tunable, picosecond-pulse, coherent radiation with 104 to 107 greater spectral flux and brightness. The facility design is based on two series of FEL oscillators including one regenerative amplifier. The primary series of seven FEL oscillators, driven by a single, 1-GeV rf linac, spans the short-wavelength range from 1 to 600 nm. A second 60-MeV rf linac, synchronized with the first, drives a series of three Vis/IR FEL oscillators to cover the 0. 5 to 100-[mu]m range. This paper presents the motivation for such a facility arising from its inherently high power per unit bandwidth and its potential use for an array of scientific and industrial applications, describes the facility design, output parameters, and user laboratories, makes comparisons with synchrotron radiation sources, and summarizes recent technical progress that supports the technical feasibility. 80 refs., 9 figs., 6 tabs.

Book Development and Utilization of the University of California Santa Barbara Free Electron Laser

Download or read book Development and Utilization of the University of California Santa Barbara Free Electron Laser written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research program has been carried out to advance the science and technology of free-electron lasers and their applications. The overall objectives of the program were the following were (1) development of free-electron lasers in the millimeter and far-infrared region. (2) facilitate the application of far-infrared free-electron lasers to research in frontier science and technology and (3) training of researchers in the development, operation and application of free-electron lasers. A free electron laser-facility, unique in world, has been developed which is operational from 200 GHz, (6.6 cm 1), to 4.8 THz, (160 cm-1), tunable under computer control and able to deliver kilowatts of millimeter wave an far-infrared power. An important part of this facility is a well equipped user lab that has been used to perform ground breaking experiments in scientific areas as diverse as biophysics, bio-medicine, magnetism, semiconductors and laser physics. Nine graduate students and post doctoral researchers have been trained in the operation, use and application of these free-electron lasers.

Book XUV Free electron Laser Development at Los Alamos

Download or read book XUV Free electron Laser Development at Los Alamos written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-electron lasers (FELs) for the vacuum-ultraviolet and soft x-ray spectral regions (together termed the XUV) are being designed at Los Alamos for integration into a future national UV/XUV FEL user facility for scientific experimentation. As proposed, this facility would consist of a sequence of up to 15 FEL oscillators and amplifiers, driven by a single, rf-linear accelerator, that will generate broadly tunable, picosecond-pulse, coherent radiation over the range from 1 to 400 nm. Below 300 nm, the peak- and average-power output of these FEL devices should surpass the capabilities of any existing, continuously tunable photon sources by many orders-of-magnitude. We describe the design parameters and predicted output of these FELs and make comparison with synchrotron radiation sources. Brief mention is given to our recent progress in developing the three primary components (electron beam, magnetic undulator, and resonator mirrors). 30 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.

Book High power Infrared and Ultraviolet Free Electron Lasers at CEBAF

Download or read book High power Infrared and Ultraviolet Free Electron Lasers at CEBAF written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to requirements for national laboratory technology transfer, CEBAF has proposed an industrial R & D initiative: a Free Electron Laser(FEL) User Facility based on an infrared FEL and an ultraviolet FEL, with the injector and the north linac of the CEBAF superconducting, recirculating accelerator serving as drivers. The initiative is a collaborative effort with four U.S. corporate partners and capitalizes on CEBAF'ssuperconducting rf technology. The FELs will provide monochromatic, tunable (3.6 to 1.7 ¿m and 150 to 260 nm), high-average-power ( -kW) lightfor technical applications and basic science studies. FEL capabilities will be competitive with those of similar initiatives worldwide. FEL operation willnot impair beam delivered to CEBAF's nuclear physics experiments. Substational commitments are in hand from the industray partners and theCommonwealth of Virgina for cost-sharing the project with the Federal Government.
