Book New Development in RF Pulse Compression

Download or read book New Development in RF Pulse Compression written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several pulse compression systems have been proposed for future linear collider. Most of these systems require hundreds of kilometers of low-loss waveguide runs. To reduce the waveguide length and improve the efficiency of these systems, components for multimoding, active switches and non-reciprocal elements are being developed. In the multimoded systems a waveguide is utilized several times by sending different signals over different modes. The multimoded components needed for these systems have to be able to handle hundreds of megawatts of rf power at the X-band frequency and above. Consequently, most of these components are overmoded. The authors present the development of multimoded components required for such systems. They also present the development efforts towards overmoded active component such as switches and overmoded non-reciprocal components such as circulators and isolators.

Book Active High power RF Pulse Compression Using Optically Switched Resonant Delay Lines

Download or read book Active High power RF Pulse Compression Using Optically Switched Resonant Delay Lines written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present the design and a proof of principle experimental results of an optically controlled high power rf pulse compression system. The design should, in principle, handle few hundreds of Megawatts of power at X-band. The system is based on the switched resonant delay line theory. It employs resonant delay lines as a means of storing rf energy. The coupling to the lines is optimized for maximum energy storage during the charging phase. To discharge the lines, a high power microwave switch increases the coupling to the lines just before the start of the output pulse. The high power microwave switch, required for this system, is realized using optical excitation of an electron-hole plasma layer on the surface of a pure silicon wafer. The switch is designed to operate in the TE01 mode in a circular waveguide to avoid the edge effects present at the interface between the silicon wafer and the supporting waveguide; thus, enhancing its power handling capability.

Book Active Radio Frequency Pulse Compression Using Switched Resonant Delay Lines

Download or read book Active Radio Frequency Pulse Compression Using Switched Resonant Delay Lines written by S. Tantawi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a study and design methodology for enhancing the efficiency of the SLED II rf pulse-compression system [1]. This system employs resonant delay lines as a means of storing rf energy. By making the external quality factor of these lines vary as a function of time, the intrinsic efficiency of the system can reach 100%. However, we demonstrate a considerable increase in efficiency even if the change of the quality factor is limited to a single event in time. During this event, the quality factor of the lines changes from one value to another. The difference between these two values is minimized to simplify the realization of the quality factor switch. We present the system optimum parameters for this case. We also show the extension of this system to two events in time, during which the quality factor of the line changes between three predetermined states. The effects of the losses due to the delay lines and the switch used to change the quality factor are also studied.

Book Binary Rf Pulse Compression Experiment at SLAC

Download or read book Binary Rf Pulse Compression Experiment at SLAC written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using rf pulse compression it will be possible to boost the 50- to 100-MW output expected from high-power microwave tubes operating in the 10- to 20-GHz frequency range, to the 300- to 1000-MW level required by the next generation of high-gradient linacs for linear for linear colliders. A high-power X-band three-stage binary rf pulse compressor has been implemented and operated at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). In each of three successive stages, the rf pulse-length is compressed by half, and the peak power is approximately doubled. The experimental results presented here have been obtained at low-power (1-kW) and high-power (15-MW) input levels in initial testing with a TWT and a klystron. Rf pulses initially 770 nsec long have been compressed to 60 nsec. Peak power gains of 1.8 per stage, and 5.5 for three stages, have been measured. This corresponds to a peak power compression efficiency of about 90% per stage, or about 70% for three stages, consistent with the individual component losses. The principle of operation of a binary pulse compressor (BPC) is described in detail elsewhere. We recently have implemented and operated at SLAC a high-power (high-vacuum) three-stage X-band BPC. First results from the high-power three-stage BPC experiment are reported here.

Book excerpt: In the SLED method of RF pulse compression, two high Q resonators store energy from an RF source for a relatively long time interval (typically 3 to 5 [mu]sec). Triggered by a reversal in RF phase, this stored energy is then released during a much shorter interval equal to the filling time of the accelerating structure. A peak power gain on the order of three and a compression efficiency on the order of 60% are typically attained. The shape of the output pulse is, however, a sharply decaying exponential. In SLED-II the two cavities are replaced by two lengths of resonant line, forming a Resonant Line SLED (RELS) and resulting in a flat output pulse. Therefore, RELS stages can be cascaded to give a greater peak power gain. Using two stages, a peak power gain greater than ten can be achieved with a reasonable compression efficiency. Unlike the BEC, the RELS compression factor per stage is not limited to two, albeit at the expense of intrinsic efficiency. Like the BEC, it uses long lines rather than short cavities.
