Book excerpt: The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite operated successfully for more than 17 years. Its archive of more than 100,000 science exposures is widely acknowledged as an invaluable scientific resource that will not be duplicated in the foreseeable future. We have searched this archive for objects which were observed 10 or more times with the same spectral dispersion and wavelength coverage over the lifetime of IUE. Using this definition of a time series, we find that roughly half of the science exposures are members of such time series. This paper describes a WEB-based IUE time series browser which enables the user to visually inspect the repeated observations for variability and to examine each member spectrum individually. Further, if the researcher determines that a specific data set is worthy of further investigation, it can be easily downloaded for further, detailed analysis. This event continued the t- dition established the year before in Lisbon (Portugal) with the First Workshop on Object-Oriented Databases. The goal of the symposium was to bring together researchers working in various corners of the eld of objects and databases, to discuss the current state of research in the eld and to critically evaluate existing solutions in terms of their current usage, their successes and limitations, and their potential for new applications. The organizing committee received 21 papers which were reviewed by a p- gram committee of people active in the eld of objects and databases. There were 3 reviews for each paper, and nally the organizing committee selected 9 long papers, 2 short papers, and a demonstration to be presented and discussed at the symposium. The selected papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including data modeling concepts, persistent object languages, consistency and integrity of persistent data, storage structures, class versioning and schema evolution, query languages, and temporal object-oriented databases. In addition to the regular papers, the symposium included an invited p- sentation, given by Prof. Malcolm Atkinson from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) where he heads the Persistence and Distribution Group.

The study was to explore the applicability of a judgment-analytic decision support system to the assessment of the likelihood of an applicant being selected for admission to the School's Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (GCBA) program. The likelihood of a program administrator selecting a particular applicant is directly linked to the assessment of the likelihood of that applicant's success in the GCBA program. The purpose of this study, in effect, was to analyze the administrative judgment process in assessment of an applicant's likelihood of success in the program. THE PROCESS OF HUMAN JUDGMENT Human judgment is a process through which an individual uses social infonnation to make decisions. The social infonnation is obtained from an individual's environment and is interpreted through the individual's cognitive image of the environment. The. cognitive image provides a representation of the environment based on past experiences and training, and essentially predisposes the person to respond to social infonnation in predictable ways. An individual's policies or beliefs about the environment represent these patterns. Human judgments are based then upon one's interpretation of available infonnation. They are probability statements about one's environment and how one reacts to it. This condition leads to the human judgment process being inherently limited. It is fundamentally a covert process. It is seldom possible for an individual to accurately describe his or her judgment process accurately.
