Multimedia Arts and Sciences, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to explore the prospect of utilizing multimedia learning platform as a tool to mitigate learning disabilities of children with disabilities in the Accelerating Minor’s Opportunity for Recovery (AMOR) Village in Anao, Tarlac. For this research, children with Autism with mental ages of 7 years old were the sample population, in which interactive learning games via android devices were implemented parallel to their original special education curriculum. The specially developed system integrated the Makaton Technique, a popular manual learning method that utilizes pictures and words to help children develop communication and social skills. A pre-test was first done to gather valuable information about the children inside the institution, and to assess the skills that teachers may have wanted for the game to target. The gathered data revealed that many of the employees of the DSWD Amor Village were open to integrating learning in multimedia platform and has commented that social skills and communication skills were among the skills the children need help on. After gathering these data, the game was designed using Adobe Flash, adapting the Makaton and the suggestions of the social workers. In the implementation of the 2-week program, a qualitative data analysis showed that listening skills and social interaction skills were continually progressing for the PWAs. A staggering jump from 1 being not skilled to 3 being averagely skilled were prominent in the gathered data. In terms of overall communication skills, the response was quite stagnant. This showed that there are gaps to be filled in the developed interactive game. Nonetheless this approach has made it possible for this sector to understand the value of technology, specifically multimedia arts, and how it can affect growth and development and cater to these group of people.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a least to most prompting procedure on the percentage of steps completed independently, on-task behaviors, and social initiations of two children with special needs and their typically developing peers, as well as to evaluate if independent board game steps acquired, were generalized to an untrained board game. In addition, this study examined the effects of enhancing board game steps with embedded social opportunities on the social initiations between children with special needs and their typically developing peers. Using a task analysis of each board game, two special needs children were paired with a partner and systematically taught the steps of how to play the game, using a least to most prompting procedure. This study was designed to demonstrate that children with special needs and their peer partners can increase their independent board game play when trained to play a game. This current study employed an A-B single subject design to assess the effects of task analysis, modeling, feedback, and embedded social cues on independent board game play of both trained and untrained games, on-task behavior, and social initiations in two children with disabilities and their typically developing peers. Following each session, the children were observed using a partial interval 10s recording scheme to score on-task and off-task Behaviors, teacher interactions, teacher prompts, teacher negatives, and the social initiations between the target subjects and their partners. In addition, the game steps were recorded throughout the ten-minute videotaped session. Interobserver agreement and procedural integrity measures were conducted. This study was conducted during free play. One 10-minute session per day was conducted for each target subject and their peer partner five days per week. Participants in this study were chosen based on teacher observations. Teachers chose children to be target subjects, who had deficits in social behaviors and children who would benefit from interaction with typically developing peers. Also, teachers chose typically developing peers who were able to follow instructions, play simple board games, and who also were age appropriate in their social interactions. Results showed that the children's levels of independence and on-task behaviors did increase during training. Levels of independence and on-task behavior continued to remain high during post game training as well. Social initiations decreased during training, but increased to high levels during post training. The results also show that teacher prompts increased during training, but decreased as the children began to independently complete board game steps. Results indicated that independent skills acquired during the intervention were generalized to an untrained board game. Future directions for research may include the use of large group game play, games other then board games, the generalization of other games and other settings, and whether or not increases in social initiations generalize to the day to day activities in the classroom.

Even as classrooms worldwide become more diverse, education is unlikely to become inclusive without deliberate efforts to dismantle exclusion and enable inclusion. This book is a compilation of contributions to the conversation about what these efforts might entail. The conversation has its origins in the Making Education Inclusive Conference held in 2013, which brought together academics and practitioners from Southern Africa and other countries. Given the expectation that teachers should play a key role in promoting inclusion, it is not surprising to find significant interest in teacher education from many of the contributing authors. Their concerns range from explicit teacher development for pedagogical responsiveness to learner diversity, to overcoming the epistemological marginalisation that learners experience where teachers are not fully confident of their subject content and how to teach it. Access to education is clearly not enough, and other contributors to this book concern themselves with ways in which structures and systems could be reconstituted to enable meaningful inclusion. This might mean looking at how teachers might use tiered systems of behaviour support and various metacognitive strategies, how physical access can be promoted on a university campus, and understanding how parents think about disability. Each chapter represents a different perspective on what it might mean to resist educational exclusion in its many forms, and each offers possible ways to make education more inclusive.

Drawing on three years of fieldwork in disaster-affected communities in Tacloban City, Philippines, this book presents ethnographic portraits of how typhoon survivors actively perform their suffering to secure political gains. Each chapter traces how victims are transformed to 'publics' that gain voice and visibility in the global public sphere through disruptive protests, collaborative projects, and political campaigns that elected the strongman Rodrigo Duterte to presidency. It also examines the micropolitics of silencing that lead communities to withdraw and lose interest in politics. These ethnographic descriptions come together in a theoretical project that makes a case for a multimodal view of deliberative action. It underscores the embodied, visual, performative and subtle ways in which affective political claims are constructed and received. It concludes by arguing that while emotions play a role in amplifying marginalized political claims, it also creates hierarchies of misery that renders some forms of suffering more deserving of compassion than others. The book invites readers to reflect on challenging ethical issues when examining political contexts defined by widespread depravity and dispossession, and the democratic ethos demanded of global publics in responding to others' suffering.
