Book Development and Psychometric Evaluation of an Instrument

Download or read book Development and Psychometric Evaluation of an Instrument written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop and test psychometric properties of the instrument of attitudes toward patient advocacy, which measures nurses' views regarding advocating for patients. The study was based on Fishbein and Ajzen's definition of attitude, the advocacy model proposed by the researcher, and classical measurement theory. Content validity was determined by seven experts. Data from the 27 respondents were used for examining test-retest reliability of the instrument. Data from the 459 respondents were used to examine construct validity and internal consistency reliability. Initially, 171 items were generated to measure three dimensions of the instrument: (1) attitudes toward safeguarding patients' autonomy, (2) attitudes toward acting on behalf of patients, and (3) attitudes toward championing social justice in the provision of health care. The item pool was revised according to comments from the dissertation committee. After this revision, 84 items were included in the instrument and were sent to a panel of seven content experts for evaluation. Experts reviewed and commented on the instrument to ensure that items were relevant to the objective of the instrument of attitudes toward patient advocacy and its three dimensions. Content validity of the instrument was determined by the Content Validity Index based on consensus among the seven content experts. The Content Validity Index was 85% for the whole instrument of attitudes toward patient advocacy, 83% for the subscales of attitudes toward safeguarding patients' autonomy and attitudes toward acting on behalf of patients, and 88% for the subscale of championing social justice. Construct validity of the instrument was determined by factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the instrument consisted of two correlated factors. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that both the emerged 2-factor model from the exploratory factor analysis and the initially hypothesized 3-factor model adequately fit the data. The test-retest reliability coefficient of the instrument and its subscales ranged form .94 to .96. Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the instrument its subscales were all above .8. These results exhibited the instrument of attitudes toward patient advocacy possessed satisfactory psychometric properties and was appropriate to assess nurses' attitudes toward patient advocacy. Understanding nurses' attitudes toward advocating for patients will provide direction to develop interventions (e.g., changing attitudes) to facilitate nurses' advocacy practice.

Book The Measurement and Development of Empathy in Nursing

Download or read book The Measurement and Development of Empathy in Nursing written by William J Reynolds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Empathy is known to be crucial to helping relationships, but professional helpers, including nurses, do not normally display much empathy as it has not been measured in clients' terms and accordingly taught. This text examines a study in which a client-centred empathy scale was developed - the client-centred measure of empathy was found to be reliable and valid and a course designed to teach nurses to offer empathy in clients' terms was effective. The findings of the study have implications for the future design of nurse eduction and the goals of the health service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhance your care with the standardized measurement of nursing interventions! Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), 7th Edition standardizes the terminology and criteria needed to measure and evaluate outcomes in all care settings and with all patient populations. A total of 612 research-based nursing outcome labels — including 82 that are NEW to this edition — provide clinically useful language to help you deliver treatment and document outcomes. Specific indicators are included to make it easier to evaluate and rate the patient in relation to outcome achievement. Written by an expert team of authors led by Sue Moorhead, this book is also ideal for healthcare administrators seeking to improve billing, recordkeeping, and cost containment. 612 research-based nursing outcome labels provide standardized terminology for individual, family, or community outcomes. Overview of the use of NOC within the nursing process introduces the importance of measuring outcomes of nursing care, and describes linkages with other classifications. Outcomes structured with a label name include code, definition, set of indicators with codes, five-point Likert measurement scales, publication facts lines, and selected references. Core outcomes are provided for an expanded list of nursing specialties. Linkages between NOC knowledge-focused outcomes and NOC behavioral outcomes focused on the concept or condition are examined. NEW! 82 new outcomes are added to the Classification, allowing you to better define patient outcomes that are responsive to nursing care. NEW! 402 existing outcomes are reviewed or revised based on research-based outcomes. NEW! A new section focused on resources supports research, implementation, and educational strategies. NEW! Revised taxonomic structure includes two new classes and expanded family and community outcomes.
