Book Transient Air Dynamics Modeling for an Advanced Alternative Fueled Engine

Download or read book Transient Air Dynamics Modeling for an Advanced Alternative Fueled Engine written by Ryan Everett and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The EcoCAR challenge is a three year competition with a goal of re-engineering a 2009 General Motors crossover utility vehicle to improve vehicle emissions and fuel economy, while maintaining drivability and consumer acceptability. Ohio State's team has selected a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) architecture with a 1.8 L CNG Honda engine as the auxiliary power unit. The Honda engine is converted to run on E85 fuel, which requires the engine control software to be rewritten. The purpose of this research is to write a feed forward air/fuel ratio (AFR) control algorithm to better manage fuel injection during transient engine events. AFR control has a major impact on engine fuel economy and tail pipe emissions. This research investigates the accuracy of using a dynamic intake manifold filling and emptying model coupled with a linear approximation of the Taylor Series expansion to predict air flow forward in time. To better estimate air flowing passed the throttle plate and into the intake manifold, a quasi-static effective area map of the throttle was created. The control algorithm uses the throttle effective area map to improve the accuracy of air flow estimation into the intake manifold because the MAF sensor is not a reliable flow meter during transient engine events. It also uses a feed forward volumetric efficiency map to predict mass air flow exiting the intake manifold. It was found that by using feed forward control software and empirical engine maps to predict manifold air pressure forward in time, a better estimate of mass air flow entering the cylinder was achieved. The creation of this software allows the EcoCAR vehicle to better maintain a stoichiometric AFR during transients, which reduces tail pipe emissions species, including NOx, CO, and unburned Hydrocarbons.

Book Computational Intelligence in Automotive Applications

Download or read book Computational Intelligence in Automotive Applications written by Danil Prokhorov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-05-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is computational intelligence (CI)? Traditionally, CI is understood as a collection of methods from the ?elds of neural networks (NN), fuzzy logic and evolutionary computation. Various de?nitions and opinions exist, but what belongs to CI is still being debated; see, e.g., [1–3]. More recently there has been a proposal to de?ne the CI not in terms of the tools but in terms of challenging problems to be solved [4]. With this edited volume I have made an attempt to give a representative sample of contemporary CI activities in automotive applications to illustrate the state of the art. While CI researchand achievements in some specialized ?elds described (see, e.g., [5, 6]), this is the ?rst volume of its kind dedicated to automotive technology. As if re?ecting the general lack of consensus on what constitutes the ?eld of CI, this volume 1 illustrates automotive applications of not only neural and fuzzy computations which are considered to be the “standard” CI topics, but also others, such as decision trees, graphicalmodels, Support Vector Machines (SVM), multi-agent systems, etc. This book is neither an introductory text, nor a comprehensive overview of all CI research in this area. Hopefully, as a broad and representative sample of CI activities in automotive applications, it will be worth reading for both professionals and students. When the details appear insu?cient, the reader is encouraged to consult other relevant sources provided by the chapter authors.

Book Modelling Simulation and Control of Thermal Energy Systems

Download or read book Modelling Simulation and Control of Thermal Energy Systems written by Kwang Y. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with an ever-growing resource scarcity and environmental regulations, the last 30 years have witnessed the rapid development of various renewable power sources, such as wind, tidal, and solar power generation. The variable and uncertain nature of these resources is well-known, while the utilization of power electronic converters presents new challenges for the stability of the power grid. Consequently, various control and operational strategies have been proposed and implemented by the industry and research community, with a growing requirement for flexibility and load regulation placed on conventional thermal power generation. Against this background, the modelling and control of conventional thermal engines, such as those based on diesel and gasoline, are experiencing serious obstacles when facing increasing environmental concerns. Efficient control that can fulfill the requirements of high efficiency, low pollution, and long durability is an emerging requirement. The modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems are key to providing innovative and effective solutions. Through applying detailed dynamic modelling, a thorough understanding of the thermal conversion mechanism(s) can be achieved, based on which advanced control strategies can be designed to improve the performance of the thermal energy system, both in economic and environmental terms. Simulation studies and test beds are also of great significance for these research activities prior to proceeding to field tests. This Special Issue will contribute a practical and comprehensive forum for exchanging novel research ideas or empirical practices that bridge the modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems. Papers that analyze particular aspects of thermal energy systems, involving, for example, conventional power plants, innovative thermal power generation, various thermal engines, thermal energy storage, and fundamental heat transfer management, on the basis of one or more of the following topics, are invited in this Special Issue: • Power plant modelling, simulation, and control; • Thermal engines; • Thermal energy control in building energy systems; • Combined heat and power (CHP) generation; • Thermal energy storage systems; • Improving thermal comfort technologies; • Optimization of complex thermal systems; • Modelling and control of thermal networks; • Thermal management of fuel cell systems; • Thermal control of solar utilization; • Heat pump control; • Heat exchanger control.

Book Spark Ignition Engine Modeling and Control System Design

Download or read book Spark Ignition Engine Modeling and Control System Design written by Amir-Mohammad Shamekhi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a step-by-step guide to the engine control system design, providing case studies and a thorough analysis of the modeling process using machine learning, and model predictive control (MPC). Covering advanced processes alongside the theoretical foundation, MPC enables engineers to improve performance in both hybrid and non-hybrid vehicles. Control system improvement is one of the major priorities for engineers seeking to enhance an engine. Often possible on a low budget, substantial improvements can be made by applying cutting-edge methods, such as artificial intelligence when modeling engine control system designs and using MPC. This book presents approaches to control system improvement at mid, low, and high levels of control. Beginning with the model-in-the-loop hierarchical control design of ported fuel injection SI engines, this book focuses on optimal control of both transient and steady state and also discusses hardware-in-the-loop. The chapter on low-level control discusses adaptive MPC and adaptive variable functioning, as well as designing a fuel injection feed-forward controller. At mid-level control, engine calibration maps are discussed, with consideration of constraints such as limits on pollutant emissions. Finally, the high-level control methodology is discussed in detail in relation to transient torque control of SI engines. This comprehensive yet clear guide to control system improvement is an essential read for any engineer working in automotive engineering and engine control system design.

Book Modeling and Optimal Control of Heavy Duty Powertrains

Download or read book Modeling and Optimal Control of Heavy Duty Powertrains written by Vaheed Nezhadali and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy duty powertrains are complex systems with components from various domains, different response times during transient operations and different efficient operating ranges. To ensure efficient transient operation of a powertrain, e.g. with low fuel consumption or short transient duration, it is important to come up with proper control strategies. In this dissertation, optimal control theory is used to calculate and analyze efficient heavy duty powertrain controls during transient operations in different applications. This is enabled by first developing control ready models, usable for multi-phase optimal control problem formulations, and then using numerical optimal control methods to calculate the optimal transients. Optimal control analysis of a wheel loader operating in a repetitive loading cycle is the first studied application. Increasing fuel efficiency or reducing the operation time in such repetitive loading cycles sums up to large savings over longer periods of time. Load lifting and vehicle traction consume almost all of the power produced by a diesel engine during wheel loader operation. Physical models are developed for these subsystems where the dynamics are described by differential equations. The model parameters are tuned and fuel consumption estimation is validated against measured values from real wheel loader operation. The sensitivity of wheel loader trajectory with respect to constrains such as the angle at which the wheel loader reaches the unloading position is also analyzed. A time and fuel optimal trajectory map is calculated for various unloading positions. Moreover, the importance of simultaneous optimization of wheel loader trajectory and the component transients is shown via a side to side comparison between measured fuel consumption and trajectories versus optimal control results. In another application, optimal control is used to calculate efficient gear shift controls for a heavy duty Automatic Transmission system. A modeling and optimal control framework is developed for a nine speed automatic transmission. Solving optimal control problems using the developed model, time and jerk efficient transient for simultaneous disengagement of off-going and engagement of in-coming shift actuators are obtained and the results are analyzed. Optimal controls of a diesel-electric powertrain during a gear shift in an Automated Manual Transmission system are calculated and analyzed in another application of optimal control. The powertrain model is extended by including driveline backlash angle as an extra state in the system. This is enabled by implementation of smoothing techniques in order to describe backlash dynamics as a single continuous function during all gear shift phases. Optimal controls are also calculated for a diesel-electric powertrain corresponding to a hybrid bus during a tip-in maneuver. It is shown that for optimal control analysis of complex powertrain systems, minimizing only one property such as time pushes the system transients into extreme operating conditions far from what is achievable in real applications. Multi-objective optimal control problem formulations are suggested in order to obtain a compromise between various objectives when analyzing such complex powertrain systems.

Book Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Engine Processes

Download or read book Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Engine Processes written by Sens, Marc and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the combustion engine looks set to remain the dominant energy conversion unit in vehicle powertrains in the medium term, either in combination with electrical components or on its own, attention will need to be paid to continue improving its efficiency in the future. The high development depth of today's combustion engines means that it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve significant efficiency improvements by simple means. On the search for these improvements, the focus has shifted to inner-engine processes, for instance charge cycles including the charging system, the mixture formation including injection, combustion and kinematic conversion of the energy within the fuel. Our 2nd conference 'Engine processes' aims to offer all developers a platform to discuss the latest technological developments in the field of inner-engine process control, and encourage new paths to be taken. We believe that the program for this conference is a sound foundation for this endeavour.
