Book Development of an ASTM Standard Test Method for Measuring Engine Oil Viscosity Using Capillary Viscometers at High Temperature and High Shear Rates

Download or read book Development of an ASTM Standard Test Method for Measuring Engine Oil Viscosity Using Capillary Viscometers at High Temperature and High Shear Rates written by JM. Demko and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a standard ASTM test method for measuring engine oil viscosity at high temperature (150°C) and high rate of shear (106 S-1) is discussed. A review is provided of the ASTM interlaboratory program that incorporated several different viscometer designs to evaluate a single generalized procedure for viscosity determination. A statistical analysis for ASTM repeatability and reproducibility resulted in a level of precision that approached that of rotational high-temperature, high-shear viscometers. Excellent correlation between capillary viscometers and rotational instruments is also demonstrated. The method is applicable to existing high-temperature, high-shear viscosity requirements in the European Committee of Common Market Automobile Constructors (CCMC) specification as well as individual high-temperature, high-shear specifications established by original equipment manufacturers.

Book Development of ASTM Standard Test Methods for Measuring Engine Oil Viscosity Using Rotational Viscometers at High Temperature and High Shear Rates

Download or read book Development of ASTM Standard Test Methods for Measuring Engine Oil Viscosity Using Rotational Viscometers at High Temperature and High Shear Rates written by RB. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two ASTM standards have been developed for the measurement of engine oil viscosity at high temperature (150°C) and high shear rate (106 s-1) using rotational viscometers. Both methods resulted from significant international participation at the working group level. One test method resulted from work done primarily within ASTM Committee D-2, Subcommittee 7, using the tapered bearing simulator. The other resulted from work done within the Co-ordinating European Council (CEC) using the Ravenfield viscometer, herein called the tapered plug viscometer. The chronological development of each standard is reviewed, and test method and precision are compared. Expansion of measurement capabilities are discussed with regard to the study of lubricant rheology and engine performance.

Book Development of a High Shear Rate Capillary Viscometer for Engine Oils

Download or read book Development of a High Shear Rate Capillary Viscometer for Engine Oils written by DL. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high shear rate capillary viscometer has been developed. It is suitable for measuring the viscosity of engine oils at shear rates of 105 to 106 s-1 and at temperatures to 150°C, conditions which are within the range experienced by oils in automobile engines. It has proven useful for evaluating the total shear stability of VI-improved oils and is also being used for interpreting laboratory engine friction testing.

Book Rheology of Fresh Cement Based Materials

Download or read book Rheology of Fresh Cement Based Materials written by Qiang Yuan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces fundamentals, measurements, and applications of rheology of fresh cement-based materials. The rheology of a fresh cement-based material is one of its most important aspects, characterizing its flow and deformation, and governing the mixing, placement, and casting quality of a concrete. This is the first book to bring the field together on an increasingly important topic, as new types of cement-based materials and new concrete technologies are developed. It describes measurement equipment, procedures, and data interpretation of the rheology of cement paste and concrete, as well as applications such as self-compacting concrete, pumping, and 3D printing. A range of other cement-based materials such as fiber-reinforced concrete, cemented paste backfills, and alkali-activated cement are also examined. Rheology of Fresh Cement-Based Materials serves as a reference book for researchers and engineers, and a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants

Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants written by Roy M. Mortier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of lubricants began in ancient times and has developed into a major international business through the need to lubricate machines of increasing complexity. The impetus for lubricant development has arisen from need, so lubricating practice has preceded an understanding of the scientific principles. This is not surprising as the scientific basis of the technology is, by nature, highly complex and interdisciplinary. However, we believe that the understanding of lubricant phenomena will continue to be developed at a molecular level to meet future challenges. These challenges will include the control of emissions from internal combustion engines, the reduction of friction and wear in and continuing improvements to lubricant performance and machinery, life-time. More recently, there has been an increased understanding of the chemical aspects of lubrication, which has complemented the knowledge and understanding gained through studies dealing with physics and engineering. This book aims to bring together this chemical information and present it in a practical way. It is written by chemists who are authorities in the various specialisations within the lubricating industry, and is intended to be of interest to chemists who may already be working in the lubricating industry or in academia, and who are seeking a chemist's view of lubrication. It will also be of benefit to engineers and technologists familiar with the industry who require a more fundamental understanding of lubricants.

Book History of ASTM Involvement in High Temperature High Shear Oil Viscosity Research

Download or read book History of ASTM Involvement in High Temperature High Shear Oil Viscosity Research written by MF. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASTM involvement in high-temperature, high-shear (HTHS) viscosity research began in December 1977, as a direct result of a request by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The essence of the SAE request was to develop an HTHS viscosity measurement that correlates with engine performance, either in bearing wear or piston ring wear. The ASTM project began as a task force effort and later grew into a section activity. Initial efforts consisted of defining objectives and developing plans for the cooperative research required. A questionnaire to develop inputs on important issues was sent to engine manufacturers, oil companies, and oil additive companies. The response to the questionnaire provided guidance for the HTHS viscosity program. After considerable debate, the task force changed its objective to focus on the development of an HTHS viscometer. To accomplish this, the task force created three subgroups to channel the efforts in the most efficient manner. The viscometer development groups have accomplished their objectives; three ASTM methods have been written and approved.
