Book Development of an Apparatus for the Dynamic Direct Shear Testing of Soils

Download or read book Development of an Apparatus for the Dynamic Direct Shear Testing of Soils written by H. C. Saxe and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the work reported herein was to design and develop a pneumatic direct shear device which can force soil failures on a chosen plane by either dynamic or static loadings. Discussed in detail are the establishment of design criteria, design, construction, and operation of the device, as well as the instrumentation used to control, measure, and record the soil loading phenomena. The apparatus, referred to in this report as DACHSHUND I, can accommodate specimens up to 4 inches in diameter and 0.75 inch thick. Time interval for the strain loadings can be varied from 1.0 millisecond to days. The present facility is operable and an extensive soil testing program is currently being undertaken.

Book Preliminary Design of Dynamic static Direct Shear Apparatus for Soils and Annotated Bibliographies of Soil Dynamics and Cratering

Download or read book Preliminary Design of Dynamic static Direct Shear Apparatus for Soils and Annotated Bibliographies of Soil Dynamics and Cratering written by Richard D. Woods and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a critical review of the literature on the dynamic testing of soils. The review was conducted prior to the design of an apparatus for dynamic direct shear tests. The specifications for the apparatus generated from this review and the preliminary design of the apparatus are presented. Included are appendixes containing annotated bibliographies (421 entries) on soil dynamics, stress-wave propagation, and nuclear and high-explosive cratering. (Author).

Book Rapid Penetration into Granular Media

Download or read book Rapid Penetration into Granular Media written by Magued Iskander and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Penetration into Granular Media: Visualizing the Fundamental Physics of Rapid Penetration introduces readers to the variety of methods developed to visualize, observe, and model the rapid penetration of natural and man-made projectiles into earth materials while providing seasoned practitioners with a standard reference that showcases the topic's most recent developments in research and application. There has been a flurry of recently funded research both in the U.S. and Europe on studying the behavior of projectiles in granular media. This book compiles the findings of recent research on the subject and outlines the fundamental physics of rapid earth penetration, and assembles a comprehensive collection of experimental and numerical techniques to study the problem. Presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary review of the latest research developments in the response of granular media to impact and impulsive loading Combines the experience of prominent researchers from different disciplines focusing on the challenges presented by impact loading of granular media Introduces recently developed methods for visualizing the fundamental physics of rapid penetration into granular media

Book A Direct Shear Apparatus With Vibrational Loading

Download or read book A Direct Shear Apparatus With Vibrational Loading written by Karén A. Taslagyan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some geotechnical design projects where soils are exposed to dynamic loads (vibrations), it becomes necessary to evaluate the strength and deformation characteristics of the soil under existing and/or anticipated vibrations. In order to investigate the effect of the vibrations on the strength and deformation properties of soils, representative samples should be collected and tested in laboratories and subjected to vibration of expected magnitudes. In this case, it is important that the laboratory equipment used is able to simulate field conditions as close as possible to provide the necessary parameters that can successfully be used in the design. A vibrational direct shear apparatus has been developed based on the conventional direct shear apparatus to evaluate the strength and deformation characteristics of soils (granular and cohesive) under a wide range of vibrational accelerations and frequencies. The apparatus makes it possible to test soils in both stress and displacement controlled modes. The design of the apparatus is such that it allows modification of the most commonly used direct shear apparatuses into the vibrational ones. The new apparatus was built and tested to prove its performance and reliability.
