Book excerpt: The development of complex lifting configurations and high speed maneuvering vehicles has emphasized the need for numerical techniques to predict aerodynamic heating rates as a function of the vehicle trajectory. These numerical programs are not expected to eliminate the requirements for wind tunnel and flight testing, but will be an aid to more efficient use of experimentation time and improve confidence that all potential problem areas on the vehicle have been examined. Three programs, the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, the MINIVER Program, and a third program were examined to determine their usefulness for vehicles with non-circular cross sections and large flat areas as exemplified by lifting reentry vehicles. The MINIVER code was found to be unsuitable for this; the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program was applicable to these shapes, but because of program limitations was used for only limited calculations. The last program also had limitations in the areas of geometry description and surface pressure calculations. Efforts were made to remove these limitations and several shapes were investigated. The ultimate goal of this effort was to extend the capabilities of one or more of the heating codes; while no effort was made to improve MINIVER or the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, significant improvements were made in the last program and inviscid flow field program.

Book excerpt: This report details a computational fluid dynamics study conducted in support of the phase II development of the X-33 vehicle. Aerodynamic and aeroheating predictions were generated for the X-33 vehicle at both flight and wind-tunnel test conditions using two finite-volume, Navier-Stokes solvers. Aerodynamic computations were performed at Mach 6 and Mach 10 wind-tunnel conditions for angles of attack from 10 to 50 with body-flap deflections of 0 to 20. Additional aerodynamic computations were performed over a parametric range of free-stream conditions at Mach numbers of 4 to 10 and angles of attack from 10 to 50. Laminar and turbulent wind-tunnel aeroheating computations were performed at Mach 6 for angles of attack of 20 to 40 with body-flap deflections of 0 to 20. Aeroheating computations were performed at four flight conditions with Mach numbers of 6.6 to 8.9 and angles of attack of 10 to 40. In a steady-state process the flows of heat throughout the system are stabilized and thus do not change with time. In an aircraft compartment, several elements compose the steady-state air conditioning load. Transfer of heat occurs between these sources and sinks by the combined processes of convection, radiation, and conduction in the following manner: 1Convection between the boundary layer and the outer airplane skin. 2Radiation between the external skin and the external environment. 3Solar radiation through transparent areas directly on flight personnel and equipment and on the cabin interior surfaces. 4Conduction through the cabin walls and structural members. 5Convection between the interior cabin surface and the cabin air. 6Convection between cabin air and flight personnel or equipment. 7Convection and radiation from internal sources of heat such as electrical equipment.The subsequent paragraphs discuss methods of determining each of the heat transfer rates listed above, as well as the physiological considerations involved in the selection of proper cabin conditions that are to be maintained.

The research work was focused on establishing the suitable mathematical/statistical models for these purposes.
