Book excerpt: Harvesting wild berries, firewood, and other non-timber forest products (NTFPs) from the boreal forest in Interior Alaska is a common activity amongst local residents. NTFPs are harvested for personal use, subsistence, and commercial purposes. While these activities contribute to informal household economies and livelihoods, harvest of NTFPs are not well documented in Alaska. Availability of these ecosystem services may be altered under changing management and climate regimes. This interdisciplinary dissertation takes a look at the activities and impacts of current NTFP harvesting practices. Survey results from a forest use survey provide insight into harvest activity in the Tanana Valley. Wild blueberries (38.5% of households with mean harvested amount of 7.7 quarts) and firewood (25.0% of households with a mean harvest amount of 4.7 cords) were reported harvested with greatest frequency, and harvesting activities were mostly concentrated around larger population centers. Interviews were conducted with personal use and subsistence NTFP harvesters from Interior Alaska. Participants enjoy harvesting from the forest, and that the importance of harvesting is a combination of both the intangible benefits from the activity and the tangible harvested items. Harvested NTFPs were seen as high-quality products that were otherwise unavailable or inaccessible. Birch syrup is a commercially available NTFP produced in Alaska by a small number of companies. Similar to maple syrup, producing birch syrup is a labor intensive process with marginal profits. Interviews were conducted with workers in the Alaskan birch syrup industry, who reported that they were seeking an alternative to the traditional employment. The effects from mechanical damage from tapping for spring sap on birch's vigor are of concern to birch syrup producers and natural resource managers. This study compared the annual increment growth of Alaskan birch trees, Betula neoalaskana, between tapped and untapped trees. No significant difference was detected from tapping, but annual variability in growth was strongly significant. A temperature index accounted for nearly two-thirds of the annual variability. Pairing this index with two climate scenarios, birch growth was extended out through the 21st century. As temperatures rise, birch in Interior Alaska are projected to face a critical threshold, which may limit or extinguish their ability to sustain growth and yield a sustainable sap resource. Integrating the survey, interview, and dendroclimatological data provides a richer picture of how NTFP harvesters actively use the forest and about the benefits derived. These findings can assist resource managers in balancing these needs with those of other forest uses on public land.

Book excerpt: Because there is a lack of innovation research in the forest products industry and innovative activities in the industry are not well documented, this study attempted to fill that void. The objectives of this study were to understand the process and definition of innovation in the forest products industry, identify the constraints on innovative activities, identify resources that would improve innovation in forest products companies, compare the innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon, and provide a benchmark study for innovation in the forest products industry.‍?‍?This study revealed that there are several aspects of innovation in the forest products industry. In addition, the innovation process is a combination of semiformal development stages, trial and error, intuition, and luck. A variety of factors constrained companies from being more innovative, including government regulations, shipping and labor costs, lack of cash flow, raw material characteristics, marketing expertise, and raw material supply. There do not appear to be any resources that would be helpful to forest products companies, at least none that the interviewed companies could recommend. Offering companies the chance to exchange ideas and network is the most valuable resource available.‍?‍?The innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon are somewhat similar yet different in the marketing tactics employed and the techniques used to obtain market information.‍?‍?Furthermore, the type of innovation projects that each region focuses on differs, as does the actual process used to develop innovations. Future research should focus on completing a quantitative component to this study, developing short courses or 1-day seminars, identifying factors that contribute to innovation success and failure, investigating why the forest products industry is not innovative by nature, and exploring the external acquisition of innovation in the forest products industry.

Book excerpt: The Alaska boreal forest is largely ecologically intact and provides various services, but is experiencing rapid, mainly climate-driven changes, and thus adaptation is essential. Systematic forest harvest management has occurred in central Interior Alaska for about 40 years, and this period is used in this study to examine the essential elements of adaptive management: monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting. In chapter 1, I examine historical relationships between forest growth and removals in the study area. My result shows that forest harvest management has relied heavily on natural regeneration. The harvest level was much lower than the overall annual allowable cut (AAC) level in the last 40 years. However, harvest activities were concentrated in road-accessible areas and white spruce stands. In chapter 2, I evaluate whether state forest harvest units are adequately regenerated after a period of 10 to 40 years under the typical low-input management. The results indicate that post-harvest regeneration has been largely successful based on the state regeneration standard established under the Forest Practices Act and follows a similar successional pattern to that seen following fire. In chapter 3, I examine whether harvest type, site preparation method, and reforestation technique resulted in differences in forest regeneration. The results indicate that clearcutting and/or site preparation increased tree regeneration, basal area, and biomass when compared to partial harvest and/or no site preparation. Planting of white spruce may only be necessary in specific circumstances, such as years with no/low white spruce seed crop, landscapes depleted of seed trees, or when early spruce dominance of the site is desired. In chapter 4, I identify the effects of landscape and forest management predictors on post-harvest regeneration in the study area and build post-harvest regeneration scenarios under different management practices and levels of climate change. The results show that post-harvest regeneration is largely influenced by site-level environmental factors rather than management practices. Regeneration is projected to fail on many low elevation sites under the climate scenarios. As a result, forest management practices need to be adjusted specifically to the site and prepared for a climate regime shift. In chapter 5, I offer adaptive management approaches to prepare for the challenges of the future by synthesizing the knowledge and practices of the past, and the needs and challenges of today. Continued monitoring and evaluation is essential for adaptive management to be successful, particularly because of the short history of systematic forest harvest management in the study area. Some of the key forestry databases I analyzed need substantial improvement. However, this study provides the basis to build adaptive forest management for the first time in boreal Alaska, which requires adaptive approaches sooner than elsewhere due to rapid climate change now well underway.

Book excerpt: Biomass resources in Alaska are extensive and diverse, comprising millions of acres of standing small-diameter trees, diseased or dead trees, and trees having lowgrade timber. Limited amounts of logging and mill residues, urban wood residues, and waste products are also available. Recent wildfires in interior Alaska have left substantial volumes of burned timber, potentially usable for biomass energy. Motivated, in part, by rising fuel prices, organizations across the state -- including businesses, schools, and government agencies -- have all expressed an interest in wood energy applications. Numerous sites have pursued feasibility studies or engineering design analysis, and others have moved forward with project construction. Recent advances in biomass utilization in Alaska have been enabled by numerous factors, and involve various fuel sources, scales of operation, and end products. Already, thermal wood energy systems are using sawmill residues to heat lumber dry kilns, and a public school heating system is in operation. Management policies on national forests and state forests in Alaska could determine the type and amounts of available biomass from managed forests, from wildland-urban interface regions, and from salvage timber operations. Biomass products in Alaska having potential for development are as diverse as wood pellets, cordwood (firewood), compost, wood-plastic composite products, and liquid fuels. In addition, new technologies are allowing for more efficient use of biomass resources for heating and electrical generation at scales appropriate for community power. This case study review considers successes and lessons learned from current wood energy systems in Alaska, and also considers opportunities for future bioenergy development.
