Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical linkage exits between watershed conditions and public use and valuation of water resources. As such, the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute are developing a community-driven watershed plan for Mahon and Wequiock Creeks, two important coastal watersheds situated along Green Bay, Lake Michigan. The Mahon and Wequiock Creeks Watershed Management Plan will meet the US Environmental Protection Agency's Nine Key Elements, which are a set of criteria established under the Clean Water Act Section 319 grant guidelines. Section 319 grant funds can be used to bolster information and education activities in the community as well as incentivize producers and landowners to implement habitat and water quality best management practices. This project is an integrated effort across federal and state agencies, local municipalities, institutional organizations, residential owners, and agricultural producers to address nonpoint source pollution and to protect threatened and impaired waterways. A stream inventory, barnyard inventory, and upland agriculture inventory were conducted to assess the condition of the watershed and the potential factors influencing watershed health, such as sediment and phosphorus loading. The planning process has been directed by a robust stakeholder engagement effort, which included community interviews, a community meeting, and focus groups. The interview questionnaire was designed to identify place-based knowledge and concerns related to conservation and water quality in the watershed. The results of the survey were used to create a list of community-based watershed priorities and informed the structure of the community meeting and the recommended watershed objectives. Upfront community engagement fostered a more meaningful rapport, and thus collaboration, between practitioners and community members during all stages of planning, and thereby, built a strong foundation for the implementation phase. The interdisciplinary community-voiced recommendations prescribed in this plan will work together to protect and improve water quality, terrestrial and aquatic habitat, and community health in the Mahon and Wequiock Creeks watershed. In essence, the Mahon and Wequiock Creeks Watershed Management Plan reflects participatory decision-making, a unique attribute in this region and one that we recommend for similar efforts in the Lake Michigan Basin.

Book Handbook for Developing Watershed Plans to Restore and Protect Our Waters

Download or read book Handbook for Developing Watershed Plans to Restore and Protect Our Waters written by U. S. Environmental Agency and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides information on developing and implementing watershed management plans that help to restore and protect water quality. A watershed is the area of land that contributes runoff to a lake, river, stream, wetland, estuary, or bay. A watershed management plan defines and addresses existing or future water quality problems from both point sources and nonpoint sources of pollutants. Experience over the past decade has shown that effective watershed management includes active participation from stakeholders, analysis and quantification of the specific causes and sources of water quality problems, identification of measurable water quality goals, and implementation of specific actions needed to solve those problems. This handbook is intended to serve as the basis for developing and implementing watershed plans to meet water quality standards and protect water resources. Although watershed plans are useful for all watersheds to protect and restore water resources, as well as to meet other community resource goals, they are critical for impaired or threatened waterbodies.

Book Effectiveness of Story Maps in Achieving Watershed Management Plan Public Outreach Objectives

Download or read book Effectiveness of Story Maps in Achieving Watershed Management Plan Public Outreach Objectives written by Eileen Boekestein and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public participation is key to the success of water quality management, yet effective communication of issues, goals, and recommended practices can be a difficult task. Traditional techniques such as newsletters, brochures, or workshops can be expensive, time-consuming, and still only reach limited populations. As a result, online methods have become appealing as offering a potentially limitless range of influences at little to no cost. This research assess the ability of a novel tool called the story map to achieve education and outreach objectives of a watershed management plan. Awareness and attitude social indicators from the Great Lakes Water Program's Social Indicators Project were assessed before and after viewing a Story map describing a restoration of rapids in the Grand River watershed in West Michigan, USA. A multivariate analysis of social indicator gain scores found significant improvements in awareness and attitudes in target audiences after viewing a Story Map, but those overall improvements were driven by key indicators associated with the story's area of focus. Open-ended responses from Story Map viewers were also evaluated to determine a preliminary set of best practices for using Story Maps to improve watershed-related knowledge and attitudes.
