Book excerpt: This study has developed numerical simulations of the Pilgrim Hot Springs geothermal system, Alaska using the TOUGH2 software package for the purposes of assessing the resource potential for both direct use applications and electrical generation. This work has included the development of two simulation models, describing fluid and heat flow in the geothermal system, that were built using geological and geophysical constraints with model simulation parameters optimized via a history matching of subsurface temperature profiles. The reservoir simulation models were used to predict the heat loss from the system for both conductive and convective heat fluxes. These reservoir simulation models served as the basis for the development of reservoir stimulation models encompassing three production scenarios with various configurations of production and injection wells. These reservoir stimulation models were used to estimate the thermal energy from the production wells. The major significance of these stimulation models is that they help to determine the feasibility of development of the reservoir for production. The reservoir simulation models estimate about 26-28 MW thermal energy and the stimulation models estimate about 46-50 MW thermal energy for the Pilgrim Hot Springs geothermal system. These estimated values indicate a favorable resource when compared to other low temperature systems such as, Chena Hot Springs, Alaska; Wabuska, Nevada; Amedee, California; and Wineagle, California.

The program provides for six field experiments which progress in difficulty from low temperature reservoirs using current technology to high temperature reservoirs using advanced types of stimulation treatments. The process used to select the six field experiment locations and stimulation treatments is described. Tentatively, the following reservoirs are proposed: Raft River, East Mesa, Baca and Westmorland (two experiments), and Brawley and The Geysers or Roosevelt Hot Springs (two experiments). The program will be reviewed after each field treatment to select a specific well candidate for the next experiment and to determine whether alteration of the sequence will be beneficial to the overall success of the project and the geothermal industry.

Book excerpt: Among the most intractable environmental remediation problems are those involving the release of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), such as chlorinated solvents, to the subsurface. Research efforts have focused on the use of numerical models to investigate reductions in contaminant concentrations due to partial mass removal and improvements in the performance of complementary source zone remediation technologies. Previous numerical investigations, however, have been limited to two-dimensional systems. Furthermore, a lack of models capable of simulating the most promising complementary technology, metabolic reductive dechlorination, has limited its application. This work developed and applied compositional multiphase numerical simulators to examine the influence of dimensionality (two-dimensions versus three-dimensions) on DNAPL source zone simulations and to investigate the benefits of stimulating metabolic reductive dechlorination at a chlorinated ethene-DNAPL contaminated site. Results from the dimensionality investigation showed that the simulation of DNAPL migration, entrapment, and dissolution in two dimensions provided reasonable approximations to the behavior simulated in three dimensions. Commonly employed saturation distribution and mass recovery metrics were approximately equivalent. Flux- averaged concentrations simulated in two dimensions, however, tended to be three to four times higher than those simulated in three dimensions. This difference was attributed to dilution at the down gradient boundary. An alternative metric, mass flux reduction, however, yielded better agreement.
