Book Transportation and Public Health

Download or read book Transportation and Public Health written by Sam Elrahman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation and Public Health: An Integrated Approach to Policy, Planning, and Implementation helps current and future transportation professionals integrate public health considerations into their transportation planning, thus supporting sustainability and promoting societal health and well-being. The book defines key issues, describes potential solutions, and provides detailed examples of how solutions have been implemented worldwide. In addition, it demonstrates how to identify gaps in existing policy frameworks. Addressing a critical and emerging urgent need in transportation and public health research, the book creates a coherent, inclusive and interdisciplinary framework for understanding. By integrating principles from transportation planning and engineering, health management, economics, social and organizational psychology, the book deepens understanding of these multiple perspectives and tensions inherent in integrating public health and transportation planning and policy implementation. Bridges the gap between transport and public health, two fields that have traditionally traveled on separate and parallel tracks Synthesizes key research and practice literature Includes teaching and learning aids, such as case studies, chapter objectives, summaries and discussion questions

Book The Local Public Transport Plan as an Approach to optimize Urban Public Transport Planning in Iran

Download or read book The Local Public Transport Plan as an Approach to optimize Urban Public Transport Planning in Iran written by Arndt, Wulf-Holger and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many countries, the exclusive concentration on a simple extension of the road based transportation network led to growing individual car traffic hence to additional demand for roads and striking external effects of transport. All issues have a severe negative impact on the living and working conditions within many urban centers. In the last decade, especially in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, municipalities tried to restrict continuous growth of car traffic and intensified their efforts in supporting alternative concepts with focus on environmentally-friendly mobility approaches. However, many of these approaches were quite ambitious and innovative but often rather implemented in a disintegrated way. The transport research activities that have been conducted during the project runtime of the Young Cities in Iran project within in the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Research and Education) funded Megacities program investigated the urban transport sector of the MENA region in general and the one of Iran in detail. The researchers revealed that the Iranian urban public transport planning system is lacking coordination between the level of the Urban Transportation Masterplan and the level of public transport operators. This publication analyses the tool of the Local (Public) Transport Plan which is already used in many agglomerations worldwide to define fixed quality and service standards for urban public transport. It, moreover, investigates the Iranian urban transport planning system and suggests a way how to adapt the tool to fit with Iranian conditions.

Book Institutional Barriers to Sustainable Transport

Download or read book Institutional Barriers to Sustainable Transport written by Carey Curtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world seeking to tackle global environmental problems such as climate change, the importance of local and national institutional change to deal most effectively with these issues is critical. This book presents an investigation of the institutional barriers preventing the development of a new vision for urban transport compatible with these realities and in those terms 'sustainable'. Through an examination of transport planning in Australia, the book challenges conventional wisdom by showing, through original research, how 'car dependence' is as much an institutional as a technical phenomenon. The authors' case studies in three metropolitan cities show how transport policy has become institutionally fixated on a path dominated by private, road-based transport and how policy systems become encrusted around investment to accommodate private cars, erecting an impenetrable barrier against more sustainable mobility and accessibility solutions. Representing a new approach to understanding transport policy, this book brings sophisticated political-institutional analysis to what has traditionally been the domain of engineering and technology. The authors connect the empirical content to this theory and the issue of sustainability making the findings applicable to most cities of the developed world, and to fields beyond transport planning. A strategy and program of action is outlined to take advantage of changing public perceptions and aimed at creating a new vision for urban transport.
