Book Exploratory Development of High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Alloy for Use in Thick Section Applications

Download or read book Exploratory Development of High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Alloy for Use in Thick Section Applications written by James T. Staley and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alloy has been developed which exhibits a good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking at 25 ksi or higher stress in the short-transverse direction based on 30 days exposure in the 3.5% NaCl alternate immersion test. Estimated minimum strength of three-inch thick plate exceeds the guaranteed minimum strength of the closest competing aluminum alloy by 3 ksi and the advantage increases with increasing thickness. Eccentricities in the results of 84 day alternate immersion tests and lack of data regarding performance of alloys of this type in natural environments for longer than 10 months, however, indicate that caution must be used in extrapolating the results of the accelerated tests to predict service performance. Book Stress Corrosion Resistance of a New High Strength Aluminum Alloy Developed for Use in Thick Sections

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Resistance of a New High Strength Aluminum Alloy Developed for Use in Thick Sections written by Irving S. Shaffer and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the investigation was to evaluate the stress corrosion behavior of a new high strength aluminum alloy plate in the T6+35 hours at 325F temper. Using smooth specimens, stress corrosion tests were conducted in two different laboratory environments. No evidence of stress corrosion cracking was found in any of the test specimens. Exfoliation tests were also conducted on stepped panels which exposed different interior planes through the thickness. The material displayed excellent resistance to exfoliation corrosion. (Author).

Book Development of High strength Aluminum Alloys with Improved Stress corrosion Resistance

Download or read book Development of High strength Aluminum Alloys with Improved Stress corrosion Resistance written by J. Corey McMillan and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program is to develop a stress corrosion resistant high strength aluminum alloy through addition of minor elements and variations in heat treatment. In Phase I, fifteen special chemistry alloys based on the 7075 composition were prepared in plate form with additions of silver, boron, cerium, yttrium and zirconium. The materials evaluation consisted of metallographic and aging studies, stress corrosion testing and determination of mechanical and fracture properties. The silver bearing alloys, while not immune, were the only alloys to show increased resistance to stress corrosion cracking in the T6 temper. Overaging treatments improved the stress corrosion resistance of all alloy combinations tested. Mechanical property evaluations and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that silver additions retard the rate of overaging and promote a finer dispersion of M' precipitate, which allow these materials to attain stress corrosion resistance without large decreases in tensile strength. However, the increased quench sensitivity of silver-bearing alloys may limit this strength advantage to thinner sections unless other changes are made in chemical composition. On the basis of stress corrosion, fatigue, fracture toughness, and strength requirements, five step-aged special chemistry alloys are proposed for Phase II testing. (Author).

Book Investigation to Develop a High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Aircraft Alloy

Download or read book Investigation to Develop a High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Aircraft Alloy written by J. T. Staley and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to develop a high-strength aluminum alloy resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in the critical short-transverse direction. The alloys investigated include a 7175 control and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys containing 5.8 to 7.4% Zn, 2.0 to 2.5% Mg, and 2.1 to 2.7% Cu along with either separate or combined additions of Zr, Mn, and Cr. They were fabricated from large ingots to two-inch thick plate to insure that the structures would be representative of thick, hot-worked products. All of the experimental alloys developed more attractive combinations of strength and hardenability than the 7175 control along with promising resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Moreover, most of them developed short-transverse elongation values equal to or higher than that of 7175 on an equivalent strength basis after solution heat treatment times long enough to dissolve substantially all of the Al2CuMg particles. Alloys which contained 5.75-6.75% Zn, 2.0-2.5% Mg, 2.1-2.6% Cu, .09-.15% Zr, .12% max. Fe, and .10% max. Si developed the most attractive combination of properties. (Author).

Book Investigation to Develop a High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Naval Aircraft Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book Investigation to Develop a High Strength Stress Corrosion Resistant Naval Aircraft Aluminum Alloy written by J. T. Staley and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of an evaluation of three tempers of commercially fabricated alloy MA15 plate in 1 in. to 6 in. thickness. Compared at equal strengths, MA15 developed higher resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, greater resistance to exfoliation corrosion, higher toughness, and better fatigue performance than established commercial aluminum alloys. Compared at equal resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, MAl5 developed substantially higher strength than established commercial aluminum alloys. Field testing of this material is recommended. Book New Materials for Next Generation Commercial Transports

Download or read book New Materials for Next Generation Commercial Transports written by Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Book Aluminum Alloys Contemporary Research and Applications

Download or read book Aluminum Alloys Contemporary Research and Applications written by A. K. Vasudevan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the structure and properties of the current and potential aluminum alloys in terms of their structure (and structural transformations by new processing methods) and the relationship between structure and mechanical and other properties. The alternative materials that challenge aluminum are considered as well, since the challenge of new competitive materials is a strong influence on innovation. The book bridges the gap between current scientific understanding and engineering practice. It is an up-to-date reference that will be of use to researchers and advanced students in metallurgy and materials engineering.
